Introduction

Alan Stuart
Vehicle Consigner and Photographer

Innovative, classically beautiful, elegant, and perfectly in keeping with Jaguar tradition - the XKR combined supercar performance with true luxury and refinement.

The XJ8 was first presented to the public at the 1996 Geneva Motor Show. Beautifully styled by Fergus Pollock the car soon found willing buyers, primarily in the UK and the United States. More than ~91,000 cars were eventually sold over a 9-year production run making the XK8 Jaguars best ever seller. In 1998 Jaguar added the Supercharged “R” model, capable of a governed top speed of 155mph and 0-60 in 5.4 seconds. Historically Jaguar had used Daimler V8 engines but the XK8 pioneered the company’s first home grown V8 unit. The 32 valve AJ-V8 engine used in these cars delivers the smooth, effortless power with which Jaguar are always associated.

This millennium registered, supercharged XKR comes in classic Jaguar British Racing Green over an Ivory leather interior. It’s been retrofitted with the improved, steel liner, 4.2L engine for improved reliability and performance. While the car would benefit from some TLC, everything appears to work as it should, it still looks great and it comes with an MOT until May 2023. These stunning Jaguars are a fantastic drive and this, iconic, supercharged convertible is ready to go.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Alan after meeting Roy the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

In my view the XKR is one of the best-looking Jaguars ever – it’s a dream to drive and fantastic with the top down.

Roy is a true Jaguar enthusiast, he's owned this XKR for ~1 year and 7 months. He tells us “This is a great car – a previous owner fitted a later 4.2L, steel liner, engine which is a real bonus. He also uprated the front shocks”.

Roy goes on to say “It’s also had the front suspension Polybushed, and I’ve had the rear wheel arch and rear window recently repaired for the MOT”. With a need to make space for his next project, this car is coming to market on auction with us. Roy will be happy to answer any questions you have about the Jaguar in the comments below.

Exterior

With purposeful, feline stance, iconic lines, and Jaguar British Racing Green paintwork this XKR is every inch a sporting thoroughbred.

Wheels and Tyres

The 20-inch, 5 spoke alloy wheels and centre badges are sound and we could see no signs of major damage, however the wheels would benefit from refurbishment as there is some evidence of curbing and other age related marks.

The tyres all appear to have good tread remaining. We have taken detailed images of the wheels and tyres – do take a look and assess the condition for yourself.

Bodywork

The car stands straight and shut lines appear good. Doors, boot, and bonnet all appear to open and close as they should while the electrically operated hood opens and closes properly as can be seen in the "Exterior Review" video.

There is some minor corrosion on the wheel arches and a small dent in the nearside wing. Some repair work has been carried out on the front as can be seen from the images and video.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

In itself the Jaguar "British Racing Green" is an iconic, timeless colour that suits the lines of this car particularly well. Much of the finish is even and consistent, retaining it's shine well.

Close up it’s clear the car has had some paintwork and respray work carried out over the years which is particularly evident on the front and around the wheel arches. While, generally presenting well from a short distance, the paintwork would benefit from some attention.

Again, we have taken hi-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves.

Glass and Trim

Windscreen, windows, and mirrors look in good shape, free from scratches and chips or scratching. Lights and lenses also appear not to have any signs of damage. Badging and trim look in good condition

Interior

Trademark Burl Walnut dash, ivory leather seats and coffee carpets – a luxurious cabin with real Jaguar personality

Seats and Carpets

The ivory leather seats look free from rips and tears and the coffee-coloured carpets are in sound condition. The front seats are showing signs of age related wear as is the interior generally and the drivers door trim needs resecuring.

The leather would also benefit from cleaning and retreating. Overall, however, the cabin appears comfortable and sound.

Dashboard

The Jaguar trademark, Burl Walnut dash presents very well, and we could see no sign of peeling, cracks or dulling of the varnish. Gauges, instruments, and switches all look in good shape.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The Burl Walnut and leather covered steering wheel looks in good condition with no damage to the wood and only minor, age related, wear to the leather.

The drive selector, in its Burl Walnut mounting and gated alloy surround presents well. Take a look at the interior video and high-resolution images to get a real sense of this luxury, sporting cabin

Mechanics

Supercharged 4.2L V8 power delivers 0-60 in around 5 seconds and a governed top speed of 155MPH.

Engine and Gearbox

This later 4.2L, supercharged V8 develops ~416BHP which is delivered to the rear wheels through Jaguars silky smooth, 5-speed automatic gearbox.

On our "Cold Start" the car fired up willingly and quickly settled down to that characteristic V8 burble. All dials appeared to work, there were no warning lights on the dash while emissions appeared clear. Check out the On the Road video to see for yourself, and the car going through the gears.

Suspension and Brakes

With ventilated discs front and rear underpinned by Jaguar engineering, you can be assured this XKR will stop when needed. Roy assures us brakes and suspension work exactly as they should.

The Drive

Quiet, smooth, and comfortable with real power and potential under the skin. This is a Jaguar after all!

On our brief test drive with Roy the car accelerated strongly, moved through the auto box almost imperceptibly and stopped quickly in a straight line. Overall, the car was comfortable and planted with plenty of power. Check out the "On the Road" video to share in our experience.

Electrics and Other

We are assured all electrics work exactly as they should and there were no apparent issues on the test drive we shared with Roy. All dials, switches and gauges look in good condition and this XKR is equipped with its original radio cassette player.

History and Paperwork

These XKR’s have earned their place in the Jaguar Hall of Fame – exceptional value, supercar performance, unadulterated luxury, in convertible form they are perfect for the summer.

OK, so it needs a bit of TLC, but this XKR appears solid, drives well, has an MOT until May 2023 and, crucially, is fitted with the later 4.2L engine. With its current owner for just under two years, essential work has been carried out to ensure this big cat is ready to use and improve. The paperwork includes some service history, original service record, receipts for previous works including the replacement engine and some past MOT’s.

The private registration plate s included in the sale.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle - this returned a Cat D insurance loss in 2011. This was before Roy's ownership.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
