Introduction

Tom Brett
Content Editor

Covin kit cars have a passionate and niche following, and why not - they are great fun for the money!

Produced from the '80s to early '90s and created by Tim Cook and Nick Vincent, hence the name Covin from 'Cook' and 'Vincent', this Porsche 911 Turbo kit car replica beautifully resembles one of our most adored 911 models - the famous Porsche 930.

Some early Covins were based on a shortened Beetle floorplan and running gear, but later examples (like this one) utilised Covin's own chassis with VW Type 3 running gear. The car comes with a wealth of history from previous owners including some old articles and memorabilia that has gathered over time with this cult kit car.

Okay, so we've auctioned hundred of thousands of pounds worth of Porsches over the years, and his is certainly something different from us! However, we were taken with the quality of this kit car and think it would either make a great car as it is (with a bit of work), or why not turn it into something special - perhaps a Baja rally car (that would be our choice in the office).

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Patrick, the owner, having photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

We bought this car for a bit of fun and it has been a great talking point in the showroom.

Yes that's right, Patrick bought this car as a bit of fun, as he was impressed with the replica and thought it would be a great talking point in his showroom.

Well it certainly was a talking point and it gained a lot of interest, more as an object than a vehicle.

Anyway, Patrick and his team have decided to sell the car and thought the auction route would be a great way to gain more expose, and find someone that wants to do what it actually meant for; driving.

Exterior

The Covin guys did a great job - if you really didn't know, or weren't Porsche enthusiasts then you really wouldn't know.

Wheels and Tyres

Sitting on 16” Fuchs type wheels (may or may not be original - we haven't had them off to check) that are in very good condition with some minor marks in some areas.

Wrapped in near to brand new Pirelli P-700-Z tyres all round with plenty of tread.

Bodywork

With a body sculpted in the spirit of the Porsche 930, this is a great showpiece for when driving around town or even as an ornamental piece (but remember our Baja idea)!

The body is in really good condition, all the panel gaps actually look pretty good considering this is a kit car and when comparing it to other examples on the Internet.

Please take a look at the images and videos to see the condition for yourself - we saw no rust or bumps along the excellent wide body.

Paint

The Baltic Blue metallic paint was far from common on Porsches in the '80s, favouring of course Guards Red, however, the blue found its way on this car and we think it really suits it - an absolutely classic colour.

We couldn’t see any significant marks on the paintwork - a testament to the great care and ownership the car has been under throughout the years.

Glass and Trim

All in very good condition across the car.

Interior

Remember this is a circa £10k car - look at the interior you get. We'd prefer this replica to a MR-2 based Ferrari any day.

Seats and Carpets

Corbeau racing bucket seats look incredibly comfortable; exactly the right option for this Covin.

Please view the photos to see the full condition - we've noticed a small tear to the near side of the driver's seat.

Carpets look to be in good order.

Dashboard

Orange needles to fit the occasion - just like the original car.

All dials and gauges are clearly legible, looking clean and in good condition - however, we have been told that some are a bit hit-and-miss in terms of them working. So a good job for the new owner to check them out.

Wrapped in fabric, the rest of the dashboard looks good too.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A 3-spoke Momo Racing Line steering wheel has been fitted and it's in excellent condition, so too is the polished gear stick.

Mechanics

Not the usual set up for the back of a 930 - however it's still air-cooled and a flat configuration.

Engine and Gearbox

Utilising a 1.6L four-cylinder engine from a VW Type 3 Fastback, the car hasn't covered many miles recently and the new owner may need to action a few shake-down miles before having complete confidence in the car.

Overall, the engine bay looks very clean and well maintained.

A 4-speed manual gearbox has been fitted.

Suspension and Brakes

A low sporty stance, like the 911 - perhaps not the same grade but nonetheless - a cool looking replica.

The brakes have been checked at the owner's garage and are working - however, please don't expect 911 type braking on this replica, more of a classic car feel.

The steering and suspension all works and passed an MOT back in April - but just like the brakes, they not going to give you a proper 930 feel. So it depends what you want to do with the car, if you are going to race / fast road then you'd definitely want to upgrade the brakes and suspension, and probably engine too :) However, if you want to pootle about in a cool looking replica then you may not need to do much.

Electrics and Other

As the owner is a mechanic and the electrics have been checked in preparation for sale.

There are no reported issues with the electrics.

History and Paperwork

So much history comes with this Covin - lots of old owners club replica to thumb your way through!

There are plenty of old MOTs and invoices from previous owners highlighting the life of the car. Adding to this are old manuals, owners' club documents and articles for you to enjoy.

Patrick, the owner and mechanic, has tended to the car when needed, keeping her in good condition and ready for the new owner.

The car is roadworthy as it passed an MOT in April, however, this vehicle is being sold as a very inexpensive project car that would be fun to work on. Of course it's not going to drive like a real 911 - the suspension and breaks would need a lot of work / upgrading if that was your goal.

Checks carried out by us:
- Photo ID of seller.
- V5 checked against seller's photo ID.
- HPi checked and clear.

This car is owned by a trade dealer and is being sold with no warranty, i.e. it is sold as seen - so as usual, please study all the images and videos before you place your bid.

Hello,
When was the car built? Is it possible to call you to discuss?

Hi Tommy, from the history/receipts that are with the car, it indicates that the car was built in 1990, at least this is when many of the parts were purchased. I am out of the office until Tuesday morning but if you leave your number with Trade Classics, I will attempt to have one of our team call you tomorrow. Apologies if this is a big tight. Thanks.

Can you tell me if the car was built by covin themselves? And if its on a covin chassis or a vw beetle chassis?
Thanks

Hi Paul, we are pretty sure that this car was not built by Covin themselves. We assume as much of the history and receipts are hand written that it was built by its original owner. The V5 for this car states that it is registered as a 1971 Volkswagen ‘Historic Vehicle” and does not specifically state that the chassis is produced by Covin themselves. It’s a little difficult to distinguish however as we don’t usually deal with these vehicles. I hope this is helpful.

Thanks.

Hi. Do you think the rear wheels could do with a 50mm hubcentric spacer?

Looks like a lovely example. A real credit to you.
I will be keeping a keen eye on it.

Good morning Russell, we must stress that this is not a quick car at all and not a patch on driving a real 930 turbo. As mentioned in the description, the engine and running gear are taken from a 20th century Volkswagen which I estimate produced 40-50bhp when new! If the buyer is hoping to drive this regularly and take it on long roadtrips/journeys, it would need massively bringing up to date before doing so.

Hope this Is helpful.

Good morning Tom, I think that must have been a typo in the listing, there isn’t a video available sorry but hopefully the photos provided are sufficient. Thanks.

Hello, Thank you for the reply, there looks to be paint damage in a couple of areas including on the column next to the windscreen. is this correct as it hard to tell if its damage or sun reflection. also how does it run?

mestizo
Member

There are a few small marks on the car, a very small scuff on the rear wheel arch but its only superficial and could be rectified without much work. I’ve just looked at the car to check and the A-Pillars are in great condition, It looks to just be a reflection as you say. In terms of running, the engine starts fine, but does like to be left idling for a few minutes to bring oil up to temp. The car is a hoot to drive however we do stress that this is not a car we would recommend taking… Read more »

Thats great, the photos make the paint work look great, is the paintwork good quality in real life?
The chassis is a Covin chassis not VW? Is there any rust to the chassis or floorpans? Is it possible for you to do a walk around video including hearing the engine run?
Thank you
Tom

Hi there, we are generally steering away from viewings & test drives due to current restrictions but as you’re located in Shrewsbury, we would make a viewing exception if you could come in the next day or two. Would tomorrow (Wednesday) or Thursday work for you?

Thanks, Jim.
