Introduction

Automotive Editor, Photographer and Consigner

Brimming full of charm and character, the Fiat 500 comes with style and substance.

Recognised as the perfect city car, the Fiat 500 is often credited as a car that helped millions of Italians to mobility and established Fiat as a global player. Introduced in 1957, the 500 received various upgrades and power increases throughout its 18-year production, without diluting the essence of the design.

The simple two-cylinder engine and cute styling earned it many fans, and its design features and reputation were so memorable, that it continues to influence the current Fiat line-up. The 500 L or Lusso, was the penultimate incarnation of the 500 with improved trim, furnishings, storage and comfort.

Unlikely to encourage high-speed pursuits, this beautifully and uniquely presented 1969 Fiat 500 L has seen an extensive restoration and a further £2,500 of mechanic maintenance and improvement. Imported from Southern Italy in 2015, it comes with Italian registration papers and provenance, with documentation of its ownership back to 1973.

Since being in the UK it has been used as an occasional and show car, with the current owner creating a unique and charming take as a Polizia car, complete with lights and livery. It is MOT and Road Tax exempt but for peace of mind, it comes with an MOT to November 2024.

This listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Kia the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I love the driving experience and the reactions!

Kia bought the car from a friend, one of several who have a varied and eclectic collection of classic cars. Since obtaining the car he has decorated it with a distinctive Polizia livery, intending to create smiles and to bring out the cheekiness of the car.

Stored in a secure storage facility, the car is used for local trips and the occasional meet, an increasing lack of use means that the Fiat needs to be sold. Kia will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Subjected to a restoration, the Fiat is solid and beautifully presented.

Wheels and Tyres

The wheels are in great shape and complemented with decent chrome hubcaps.

The car is fitted with tyres that appear to be over 10 years old, they have plenty of even thread but there are mild signs of age noted on the sidewalls of both off-side tyres.

Bodywork

The underside of the car looks solid and clean - the luggage and engine compartment also are in good shape.

The exterior presentation is also positive, with a decent panel fit and shut lines. There are no notable signs of damage to the bodywork. All the doors open and close without obstruction.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The paint has no outstanding flaws and displays a consistent hue with a decent lustre. There is very little evidence of road wear.

The Polizia decals have been well applied.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass and their seals are in good shape, with no headaches in terms of wear. The headlamps and lenses are neatly presented.

The trim appears to be correct for the model, the car has seen a replacement rear bumper - the original will be supplied.

The chrome embellishments and trim are all presentable.

Interior

The simple cabin is highlighted by the flawless seats and dashboard.

Seats and Carpets

The seats are in excellent condition, with no signs of age.

The cabin is furnished with rubber mats on top of the carpet, all appear to be recent fittings and free of any form of dampness.

Dashboard

The dashboard, centre console, switchgear and binnacle are in decent order.

Aside from the hand brake lever wear, there is very little to suggest the car's age.

The door cards are clean and well-mounted and the rear trim is in good shape.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel and gear lever show mild wear but otherwise suit the positive cabin presentation.

Mechanics

The buzzy soundtrack is backed up with evidence of good maintenance and mechanical attention.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine fired up without any hesitation, with no unwanted noises heard and no signs of excessive exhaust smoke. The car was brought outside of its storage, but we noted that the cold start was also event-free, with no signs of fluid leaks in its storage area.

The engine presentation is positive, with evidence of new parts and maintenance. It has seen several mechanical upgrades to improve its dependability, including an alternator conversion kit, a new battery, and an electronic distributor.

The gearbox was demonstrated to work well, with smooth changes and no crunches. Kia hasn’t reported any issues with the clutch.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension was free of any knocking at town speeds and taut with no thuds noted.

There were no issues in terms of the car stopping ability, slowing down in a straight line with no unwanted noises.

The Drive

The first thing you notice about the 500 is the amount of space in such a diminutive car, thanks to its engine layout and upright windows. We ambled around the block, with the engine not missing a beat as Kia, the driver on the day, powered through the streets.

The air-cooled buzz of the engine needs to be worked to get the most out of it, but it's always eager and peppy. It corners without unwanted noises heard from the wheels, with no vibrations noted at low speeds. The car's character and ability to weave in the tightest of spaces is the main key to the appeal of the 500 but Kia also commented on how dependable the car has been with no issues with its reliability.

Electrics and Other

The car has seen a handful of interesting fittings, which created a huge amount of goodwill amongst passers-by. Kia has fitted a set of operational flashing lights on the top of the car. There is also a Vintage Portable Motorola Mocom 70 FM Radio fitted inside.

The soft top is in excellent condition, and operates without any issues, providing a good tight seal.

History and Paperwork

Imported from Southern Italy in 2015, it has seen £2,500 of work since then.

First registered in June 1969 in Cosenza, Southern Italy, the car retains some Italian registration papers and provenance, including details of its owners back to 1973. Before it arrived in the UK, there are photos to support the evidence that it was completely restored down to bare metal in 2008.

The car has remained in London over the last 9 years, with its MOT records suggesting it has covered around 1500 miles during that period. The car is a regular at local classic car events and was sold to the current owner in 2017.

Invoices add up to almost £2,500, which include an alternator conversion kit, a new battery, and an electronic distributor. Before this, the car saw a steering box and carburettor rebuild, tracking and brake checks. It comes with a current V5 and an MOT to October 2024.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned an HPI check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment of the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
