Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Photographer and Editor

One of the prettiest Fords ever to have been produced in the UK.

When new, the Consul Capri provided British buyers with genuine glamour and glitz; an American inspired car with a package suited for those who wished to turn heads, on a manageable scale and with the dependability of well-proven mechanics. Released in 1962, the Consul Capri was placed in the Ford lineup as a stylish and compact car, with genuine exclusivity. Sadly, the fast-paced changing fads of 1960s car styling were unkind to the Consul Classic, as the car, with its flamboyant fins, heavy chrome trim and curved screens, looked passé by the end of the decade, but the Consul Capri's snapshot of the jet era looks positively stunning today.

One of the other criticisms was the mediocre power, the Consul Capri was really built for modest cruising and being admired and some felt the original engines were not quick enough. However, this 1963 example has been retrofitted with a rebuilt Crossflow 1.6-litre from a Ford Escort, which goes some way to address that original drawback. Finished in Ermine White, the car has had an extensive body restoration, and even more strikingly, been furnished with a tastefully prepared turquoise and white interior, echoing the flamboyancy of its US influences.

Coming to market after ~4 and a half years with our vendor, it has much of the exterior and interior completed including a total re-wiring, the car needs attention mainly to the braking and a few minor cosmetic items. As a result, it is being sold as a project and would be suitable for someone looking for a mechanical / electrical project appeal.

This listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Russ the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I always wanted a Consul Capri, but I could never afford one until recent years.

Motivated by memories of his father's Consul Capri, it was the car in which Russ learned to drive. Captivated by the early 60’s American style and his enthusiasm for the music of the era, Russ has also spent a considerable amount of time and effort on the unique interior finish.

Russ is selling the car because he's due to emigrate, and they don't drive on the same side of the road, otherwise he wouldn’t have parted with it.

Russ will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

With it's 60s flair and American influences the Consul Capri really stands out on the road today.

Wheels and Tyres

The 7x13 standard Capri wheels are in good shape, and the white paint only shows a few instances of paint loss.

The front and rear of the car are fitted with Vitour Galaxy R1 white rimmed tyres with a spec of 175/50 - these are date coded from 2020. Russ has told us that they’ve hardly seen any use, and their overall condition and tread support this.

A set of white painted lattice hubcaps and what appear to be Ford Corsair hubcaps are included in the sale.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior of the Capri and a closer look at the wheels and tyres to make your assessment of their condition.

image

Bodywork

The body presents well, the panels are free of significant damage and provide a flush fit to the body, although the bonnet would benefit from a little adjustment. The doors open and close with ease. The bonnet has an MK3 Capri power bulge welded in.

The engine bay and luggage area are clean and solid. The underside and wheel wells have been treated with stone chip paint and appear to be in good shape.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

image

Paint

The Ermine White paint has been generally well applied, with no notable runs and a good coverage. There are a few signs of overspray, a small paint crack and a mild mismatch on the bonnet, but the overall finish is positive with a presentable lustre. There are a few minor marks and light scuffs consistent with a car that has been in storage.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

image

Glass and Trim

The glass is in good shape, and just the windscreen seal shows wear in places.

The lights and lenses are in good condition.

The chrome trim is almost complete - the bonnet badge, hubcaps and the (supplied) wing mirrors are not fitted. The window, door, light bezels and body trim chrome are pitted, and both bumpers also show their age to a lesser degree - they appear to be rust-free with no significant dents, so could be ideal candidates for rechroming.

image

Interior

The interior has been tastefully furnished to suit the period styling.

Seats and Carpets

The seats are in excellent shape, with a few surface marks that appear to be removable.

The bespoke grey carpets are in good condition, with no dampness.

The boot has also been lined with matching carpets and has sound-deadening insulation.

image

Dashboard

The matching turquoise dashboard with white accents is cleanly presented, with a few surface marks which would probably clean up nicely. The controls and dials are presentable. We didn’t test them all for functionality, but Russ believes most are operational. The interior light will need replacing.

Both door cards are decent with a few light marks, but are well mounted to the doors. The rest of the trim is good. The white headlining is clean, with some wear noted at the back.

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The colour coded steering wheel and gear lever was part of the renovation.

The wheel has surface marks but free of wear.

image

Mechanics

Mechanically sound, the 1.6-litre Crossflow engine gives the car a useful power boost.

Engine and Gearbox

On the day the Crossflow 1.6-litre engine started up without hesitation, with no plumes of exhaust smoke or signs of warning lights on the dashboard. The engine runs without any wobbles or uneven vibrations.

The engine presentation is positive; a few components show their age, but it is believed to have been rebuilt and installed recently. It is also fitted with a stainless steel exhaust.

The clutch has a good feel, with a decent biting point - it engages first and second gear without any issues.

image

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension components are in line with the car's storage status, showing mild signs of age, but appear to be complete and in good shape.

The brakes are believed to have been uprated. Russ told us they are operational but will need attention to the fluid/master cylinder/reservoir to ensure they are fit for purpose.

image

The Drive

Russ informs us that it's currently registered as SORN, and therefore not suitable for a meaningful test-drive, so we could only show the Consul Capri driving a few metres in between some private land and his house.

However, the signs appear positive, as the car drove the short distance without any negative feedback from the engine, idling smoothly on tick-over and free of any excessive exhaust fumes, leaks or misfires. Normally stored in his house garage, the 'On the Road' video footage shows him driving the car, which he told us was the first time he had driven it since buying it in 2021!

image

Electrics and Other

There are a few additional parts with the car, which include a windscreen seal, wheel trims and a pair of wing mirrors.

A MP3/USB Player has been fitted as part of the bespoke centre console. Russ told us the car has had a complete rewire.

image

History and Paperwork

The car was registered in April 1963 and was subjected to a body restoration around ~5 years ago.

Russ bought the car as a project from an enthusiast who had completed its body restoration and needed reassembly. He told us that the intention was to use the car as a competition car, until Russ bought it and added the bespoke interior and fitted a 1.6-litre engine, as part of its rebuild. It comes with a current V5 and will need to be trailered to its new home.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment of the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
