The Capri has a strong place in the history books, thanks to its real driving experience and Gran-Turismo styling.

The Ford Capri can be summed up as a British institution, despite its pan-European roots and development. The car was beloved by the British public so much, that demand kept it in production until 1987. The car oozed style when originally launched in 1969. The chaps at Dunton in the Special Vehicle Engineering department pulled a masterstroke in 1981 by installing the Granada V6 2.8-litre engine using the Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection on the new top of the range Capri's. While the 160bhp engine didn’t revive sales, it did boost the model's image. Helped by the additional wider alloy and stiffened suspension, it gave the able chassis a final fling of glory.

This is where Felix's car comes in. The MK3 Capri, particularly in 2.8i V6 guise, has become something that gets Old Skool Ford fans rather excited. Considered to be the ultimate production Capri, the two-tone paint, excellent condition body and originality of this car might just be the thing to bring out the Bodie and Doyle in us...

Meet the owner

In 2.8i spec, the Capri was an obvious choice to bring back to its former glory.

A real classic car enthusiast and collector, the seller had always wanted a Capri, so when he saw this example which had all the right credentials and background to bring up to scratch he had to have it. The previous owners have kept on top of the maintenance and upkeep of the car, which Felix has built upon with significant outlay spent to give the car a chance to be enjoyed again.

Now that the car is finished, the Capri itch has been scratched for Felix, and as he says "You can't keep them all!".

Resplendid with its two-tone finish, mean stance and red flash graphics, this Capri will attract more attention than you might expect.

Wheels and Tyres

The iconic pepperpot wheels have been refurbished and as a result, are in excellent condition. The 13" Nankang tyres are also in excellent condition, with plenty of life in them. They've probably covered 200 miles since being fitted, and are dated 2016.

The overall presentation of the Capri is very good, with straightly aligning panels and true panel gaps throughout. The lower half, including the wheel arches, door bottoms, sills and inner wings are very good, with the added benefit of the underside of the car having been Waxoyl'd. The drivers side rear floor pan has seen some recent welding repairs but overall it was a sound original car. No sign of rust on the door shuts, and both side doors hang correctly. The boot area is perfect, no rust can be seen at all in the spare wheel bay from the photos.

The distinctive Titan Blue over Cosmos Silver two-tone combo is what really sets this car apart and grabs attention, we love the look.

The paint is in excellent order, as you would expect for a recently restored car. There are no significant marks or chips, and colour is even across the car, take a look at the video and photo reviews for the detail.

Glass and Trim

All the glass and trim are original, with registration plate etchings (this has also been carried out on the rear lamps) on every pane of glass, with the only exception of the windscreen which has been replaced with an original spec item. All door and glass rubbers are excellent.

The interior has been exceptionally well preserved, the chequered seats offering an unexpected retro delight.

Seats and Carpets

The seats are in generally very good condition with no rips and damage, just a very little wear on the bolster on the driver's side seat. This should be considered more than acceptable on a car of this age and mileage. The car comes with correct spec 2.8i carpets and mats, which look to be in perfect condition.

With the the dials being deep inset in the dashboard, it gives the interior a really sporty feel.

All controls and dials are functioning correctly, including the heater fan speed. The dash is complete, with no cracking or significant wear and tear.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The 3 spoke steering wheel reflects the age of the car, with a little wear but no cracks or damage. The gearstick looks in good condition.

The retro-fitted 5-speed gearbox is a welcome combination to the gutsy V6.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine starts up nicely, with no untoward excessive oil breathing, no blue smoke, noises or rattles. The car has been upgraded to accommodate a 5-speed gearbox, it was not standard fitment to early 2.8i models. The engine is visually in good clean condition, and in line with the mileage of the car.

Suspension and Brakes

The car has seen a lot of work to renew the suspension and brakes during its restoration, so you can place confidence in the handling and stopping power.

The Drive

The Capri is simplicity itself, and that's where the fun of owning such a car lies. Sitting low in the cockpit, with the V6’s throaty roar and long bonnet in front of you conjures up images of muscle cars. While the Capris power output may seem a little tame today, you still have a car that can provide skills with spills in the right environment. However, it can also be driven in a civilised manner thanks to its stability and absorbent ride.

Electrics and Other

The car is fitted with an original cassette/radio and is fully functional, with no issues with the electric aerial which kicks in when you tune into Tony Blackburn. The boot carpet, parcel shelf and trim are in excellent condition, with the lightest of wear. It has to be noted that the car also has power steering and a steel sliding sunroof.

History and Paperwork

Two-tone exterior, pepper-pot wheels, check cloth interior and a sympathetic restoration make this a very nice early 2.8i Capri.

The engine has seen a lot of mechanical sympathy over the years and it comes with evidence of being a car used for classic car shows, with owners magazines to suggest a loyal dedication to the model. The previous owner had bought the car from Wales, where it had lived for almost 30 years. It was then sympathetically restored starting with a good original car as a base, preserving all of the originality including original etched glass, supplying dealer’s sticker, original seats and carpets, original body shell and factory fitted front wings.

In addition, the car has benefited from new tyres, brake shoes, brake discs, wheel cylinders, brake pads, suspension bushes, front springs, fuel pump, fuel filter, bespoke floor mats and boot struts. It has also undergone a full service, which has been confirmed by the owner by its new filters, plugs, leads, distributor cap, refurbished alternator, new belts, new wheel bearings and propshaft joints.

The body has been faithfully repainted and comes with refurbished wheels and exterior trim. The car was also undersealed. It comes with a new MOT, and lots of paperwork including the original service book and old MOTs.

We have actioned check on the follow; seller ID, V5, HPi.

Hi Felix.
Are you able to give some more details as to the gaps in the history please?
Really not much to go on or explanation of how long it might have been off the road.
Can you also let me know when the respray was done please, and by who?

Hi. The car was originally delivered new in Wales as you can see from the original service book and dealer sticker on the rear screen. It lived there for most of its life and has been unused and stored for nearly 20 years mostly in Wales, punctuated by an MOT in 2012, then for 4 years in the UK by the previous owner who slowly replaced most of the wear and tear mechanicals as a weekend hobby but never used the car. He then sold it at the beginning of the year as he had bought a three wheeled motorbike… Read more »
