Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Editor and Photographer

An exciting 'Series 1' project car - ready for a new owner to take over and bring back to life.

Launched to international acclaim in 1961, the Jaguar E-Type was a direct evolution of the Le Mans-winning D-Type. By pairing a novel subframe with race-proven powerplants, it set the definitive benchmark for the modern sports car. In its purest Series 1 form, the E-Type is widely considered one of the most beautiful cars ever created. The Fixed-Head Coupe (FHC) variant, in particular, is prized for its rare blend of daily usability and a truly dynamic driving experience.

The later 4.2-litre Series 1 models are especially desirable, offering significant mechanical refinements and increased torque. Beyond its staggering top speed, the 4.2 is celebrated for its composure; with independent suspension and disc brakes all round, it provides a level of handling confidence and comfort that was years ahead of its time.

This 1965 4.2-litre FHC comes to market after almost ~9 and a half years with our vendor, it is a genuine UK-market example and represents an ideal starting point for a restoration. A matching-numbers car in a classic colour scheme, it benefits from having the majority of the sheet metal work already finished. Offered as a running project with its V5 and Jaguar Heritage Certificate, it is the perfect canvas for a rebirth.

This listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Paul the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Bought with the intention of a sympathetic restoration, it is now for sale as I have realised I have far too many projects to complete!

Being sold by a former Jaguar Land Rover engineer, this represents an excellent opportunity for anyone seeking a solid project, as it is being offered to make room for ongoing projects.

It was originally a cream exterior with a red interior. It is a matching numbers car as shown by the frame stamp, the cylinder head and block stampings. This car also has the body number crayoned onto the back face of the instrument panel (see the paperwork gallery).

The car was offered to Paul in 2016, having last been taxed in 1986 and so apparently off the road for the last 40 years.

Paul will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

The body does not need a major investment thanks to its ongoing sheet metal restoration.

Wheels and Tyres

The Pirelli tyres are likely to date from the 1980s, they do show some cracking in the walls but do hold air. The satin wire wheels are pitted but appear to be salvageable.

Please take time to review the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior, wheels, and tyres so you can make your own assessment of their condition. Tyres are a key safety item, and you should consider replacing any that are cracked, perished, unevenly worn, or over 10 years old.

image

Bodywork

The car is best described as a 'barnfind' that has the advantage of having had the lion's share of the body shell restored already, and is not a huge amount of work away from being able to be repainted. The renovation work to the structure includes a new complete main floor with seat cross members, seat fixing rails, underfloor longitudinals and footwell panels. There are new inner and outer sills and heel board, boot floor, inner and rear wheelhouse inner panels.

The new exterior panels include a new rear number plate panel centre, new rear number plate panel sides and new rear floor sides / rear quarter lower panels. There are also new rear axle upper and rear panels, new B post shut panels and a repaired rear quarter. The inner and outer rear wing panels have been repaired. The rear wheel arch inner structures have been completely rebuilt with a combination of mainly replacement and some repaired panels.

It has a replacement OEM bonnet assembly, including a new front lower valance. It needs some minor localised repairs and realignment, and the lamp closing panels need attention. In addition, the door shut faces, upper and lower A pillars need tidying up, and the tailgate needs some localised repairs and alignment. All doors open and close without problems.

Paul has supplied new RH / LH front sill closing plates, new air cleaner and battery fixing panels, new left front mudguard panel, new RH / LH door outer skin panels and new rear quarter light seal carriers, which all need to be fitted and aligned.

The images in history show the extent of the completed underbody restoration before the exterior was storage primed.

The rear structure and underbody has been restored to a good standard with mainly complete pressings as original. Panels replaced include compete rear wheel arch inner structure, rear wheel arch closing panels and rear chassis legs.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

image

Paint

The exterior of the car has been finished in white primer.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

image

Glass and Trim

The windscreen and hatch glass are in good shape with tired seals. It appears that the car requires a passenger door glass and possibly the passenger door striker, but Paul has told us he hasn’t gone through all of the boxes.

Some of the trim are original pieces as perfect candidates for re-chroming, with existing items showing their age. The windscreen upper and lower finishers have yet to be found. A few items such as new rear lenses, indicators and its original headlamps are included in the spares box.

Paul told its most trim items have been temporarily refitted for completeness only.

image

Interior

Finished in the classic red leather, the cabin is almost complete and just needs cosmetics.

Seats and Carpets

The red leather seats are candidate for a refurb but they are good enough for reuse as-is being beautiful originals.

The car is not fitted with any carpeting - a few of the original items are amongst the box of spares, but a complete new set would be the best option.

The boot lining is in decent shape, if a little grubby.

image

Dashboard

The dashboard is complete with a decent set of dials and switches, showing signs of age in places. The facia is free of damage.

Of course, the controls were not tested for functionality.

The headlining needs a clean and remounting, but appears to be free of significant damage.

The door cards are complete, door handles and window winders are included (boxed).

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel and gear lever are in line with the age and restoration status of the car.

image

Mechanics

The 4.2-litre engine is particularly strong and perfect for finishing.

Engine and Gearbox

This car has the advantage that the engine has been sympathetically woken up from its slumber following a careful process, so as not to cause any internal damage. It will now run run with easy start and fuel bowls filled but will need a full carburettor and fuel system rebuild to run extensively. 35-40 PSI on cranking is a positive result, as is 130 PSI compression on a cold engine, and no obvious clouds of smoke or mechanical noise. Paul has also done another video of the cold engine with compression of 148 PSI.

The car will need a replacement exhaust system.

The engine looks complete aside from the battery and the wiring loom.

The gearbox was not tested.

image

Suspension and Brakes

The car rolls and steers freely but we can't guarantee every suspension and braking part is there, but is fundamentally complete.

The car comes with a pair of unfitted OEM front brake discs.

image

The Drive

It has not run under its own power for years but the positive engine compression results and freely cranking engine bodes well.

image

Electrics and Other

All strong indications that it is in fundamentally good health and a strong case for straightforward restoration to whatever level you choose. Paul told us the car will need a complete wiring loom as the original (except for the dash) is removed to facilitate repairs.

image

History and Paperwork

With just three previous keepers, this car has been in the hands of a Jaguar specialist for the past ~9 and a half years.

The car is a factory original UK market RHD Series 1 FHC, manufactured in June 1965 and first registered in Eastbourne in the same month. Paul obtained the car in 2016, having been largely unused since the mid-80s.

It comes with a current V5 and a heritage certificate.

There is a large number of spares, which can be viewed in the paperwork gallery.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment of the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

By way of a sanity check – a similar RHD FHC project car was recently sold for £27k at public auction – I’m sure you did your research too. This car, whilst in original paint, was mechanically 100% inactive and totally rusty having an original unrestored UK shell. A very similar same age roadster in the same condition (inactive, original rusty body) was sold at auction for £39500. Similar cars to mine, but with original rust, are currently advertised in the late £20k’s.
My car is “£30k in a body shop” better than any of the above, and running but otherwise comparable.
So – if you are looking for a good value project please bid on, I’m not looking to match the above prices, and I am taking a huge hit, but we’re not there yet!

I’d like to add that the car was viewed yesterday and that comment was made that the car was better in the flesh than in images. This is primarily because of being able to see the extent of metal repair completed so far, and the honesty of it. The rear wings in particular need surface shaping before paint but no further metal rectification.

Hi Paul, would you be able to itemise all of the missing parts and parts that are beyond repair and will need replacement. Thanks

Hi – most of this is mentioned in the text but as a summary – missing left door glass, windscreen upper and lower finishers and left door striker. Over and above that parts are such that would normally be replaced during a restoration such as exhaust, seals, harness, hoses, carpets etc. Hope that helps. The good news is that the missing parts can inexpensively be found in good used condition and that everything normally replaced is available new from multiple specialists.

Hi – well spotted – the cam covers are from a series 2 so are not technically correct for a series 1 although they work correctly. The engine and cylinder head are indeed original to the car and match the Heritage certificate – images of all 3 are in the details. Someone obviously preferred the look of them, in fact polished and with fresh paint they do look good. However I think I have one correct smooth cam cover which I’m happy to include. Hope that helps clarify!

Why has the engine fitted with later cam covers,is the engine not origional

Its worth saying, based upon comments, that there is clearly surface shaping required to the rear wings before paint – the welding is complete and the joints are seam welded and mostly finished, some additional finishing being required at the wing and pillar joint to the sills. The images in the history section show the finished welding to a good standard as well as the comprehensive structural welding.

PaulB

Hi – there is only a small amount of welding related to the sill end plates and their respective batter and air cleaner carriers, these parts are included and little or fitting is required. The majority of the work is in fitting the door skins (bond as opposed to weld) and tidying the existing welds in the door shut faces and sill to A pillar and wing joints. There may be some metal required to the tailgate and lower A posts, but its tiny. 95% + of the work is complete and for sure you could complete it at home. I would personally strip the primer as it was only ever intended as a storage medium.
Please come and take a look and I’ll walk you around it! Thanks Paul

Hi Paul , E types are all new to me ! Restored a few other cars. I have a professional mig welder & workshop, would you think the remaining body work repairs are something I can take on ? When the car was painted in undercoat was the metal rust free or would I need to remove and start again ?
Thank you
