Introduction

Jacob Boodrie
Professional Consigner

The little car with a big personality - enter the MG Midget MKIII.

Production started on the MG Midget in 1961 and enjoyed a long and prosperous life up until 1979. The idea behind it all was to offer a fun sports car to the masses on a budget and MG did just that, very well.

Over the years the Midget saw various engine upgrades, this low mileage example features a 1275CC 1.3L engine - lively enough to have lots of fun and wind-through-hair motoring days in.

Finding a good one however is hard to come by nowadays, and that's why we really like the look of this example. Owned by Mes for 13 years, he's enjoyed meticulously restoring this Midget and using only on sunny weekends.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Jacob after liaising with the owner Mes.

Meet the owner

I've always had a place in my heart for MG Midgets, it's a British sports car from my childhood and I'll be sad to see this one go.

After having to part with his Mk IV Sprite in 2007, Mes started looking for a replacement. When Mes saw this example going at auction, he just knew it was the one - the perfect classic sportscar project.

Finished in a lovely Pageant blue and being such low mileage, Mes has tried really hard to keep it this way over his 13 years of ownership.

When he bought the car, it had had a lot of work carried out, coming with a fresh respray, new double-duck hood, carpets, door cards and springs. Mes says, "not only does it look great, but it also drives exceptionally well too."

Exterior

You can't help but smile when you see one of these - the MG Midget, cute and sporty with '60s styling all round.

Wheels and Tyres

The car has its original sporty Minator wheels that are wrapped in Kumho tyres - we really like the sport stance of the MG Midget.

The wheels are in great condition - please take a look at the photos to see for yourself.

Bodywork

The bodywork looks good on this example, we did notice a little crack at the bottom of the O/S rear wing and some minor bubbling around the car.

The shut lines across all the panels are tight and even with no dents etc observed - please watch the video to see this car up and close.

Mes has also replaced the front bumper with a custom one. He still has the original (included in sale) which he says is in great condition and the only reason for swapping is he prefers the look of this newer design.

Paint

Finished in an original "Pagent Blue" colour.

Across the car, the paint is even in finish and colour. The only points that we did notice were some light pealing on the front bonnet when you get close to the car.

Please have a look at the images to see the condition of the paint in more detail.

Glass and Trim

All the glass and trim looks in great condition, especially on the rear convertible hood. We didn't notice any discolouration or wear while inspecting the images and videos.

Interior

Comfortable and practical, black vinyl seats with a minimal dashboard layout - everything you need for a great roof-down adventure.

Seats and Carpets

The black vinyl seats look excellent, one very well kept example.

Mes has treated the car to new black carpets all around, they really look great and bring the car back to life ready for the new owner to enjoy straight away.

Dashboard

Classic and simple dials, this fine example's dials look in great condition, very clean all round.

Mes has informed us that all the dials and controls work as they should do.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Mes has fitted a Mountney steering wheel. This wooden wheel with a three-spoke design and leather trim looks great - very sporty for its time and still has that racing look today.

We can imagine the steering wheel would give you a lot of control while cruising down country lanes.

Mechanics

Using developments seen in the Mini Cooper S, MG shortly followed; increasing their engine to 1275CC, a major leap in the development of the Midget.

Engine and Gearbox

Featuring the refined and nippy MG 1275CC engine. Mes mentioned his Midget has its original HS2 carbs and a three branch tubular exhaust manifold fitted as well.

The rear axle gear ratio was reduced from its predecessor to 3.90:1, this not only increased the final drive ratio it also gave far better fuel economy.

While on the road Mes reports that the engine pulls just as it should. He mentioned that he's achieving a steady oil pressure of 60+ p.s.i.

Please look at the images for a closer look of this engine.

Suspension and Brakes

When Mes purchased the car at auction he noticed it was sagging to one side, he got on the case straight away and replaced the rear springs.

He assures us that the car handles as you'd expect and stops just as it should do too - please view the images to see this in more detail.

The Drive

Where to start! A fantastic accessible classic sports car that was a hit in its day and just as desirable now.

Mes reports great overall handling and a smoothly running engine that pulls the car nicely from A to B. He takes it out very rarely and always in the dry - "there's not a better feeling than putting the hood down on a hot sunny day and taking it for a spin round town".

Electrics and Other

While refurbishing the car over the previous 13 years, Mes has rebuilt the dynamo and fitted a new voltage regulator, complete with a new battery as well.

Mes has reported that all other electrics are working as expected.

History and Paperwork

Forget those rusty and high milage examples you've been looking at - this MG Midget ticks all the boxes, low mileage and great condition.

Mes has looked after this refurbished example, making it quite the desirable MG Midget MKIII.

Hi

Is it converted to unleaded?
Do you have the front bumper and brackets?
would it pass an MOT?

Regards
Ash
