1975 MG MGB GT V8

The timeless MGB GT is not only a practical classic, it's powerful with it's lightweight V8 block.

The MG MGB is a sports car manufactured by BMC from 1962 till 1980. This late MGB GT V8 was an eight-cylinder 2+2 coupe variant. The GT V8 was powered by a lightweight aluminium block, a 3,528CC Rover V8 which was first fitted in the Rover P5B. The result was vastly different to the earlier MGC, this engine actually being 40 pounds lighter than the standard 4 cylinder, and these V8 versions are sought after as a result.

This lovely example is coming to sale from the original owner Roger, 46 years of custodianship, and many enjoyable miles covered in the car. Coming with all the service receipts and MOTs that chart it's life, it's ready for touring this summer.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Dom after meeting Roger the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I've owned this spritely MGB since new, hopefully my custodianship shines through after all these years.

Roger part-ex'd his Morris 1275 GT back in 1975 for the brand new MG MGB GT V8. He was on the hunt for a larger car it fit the bill perfectly. He enjoyed it so much, he's had it for over 46 years.

Being the only owner, Roger has really given the MG MGB GT V8 all the attention it deserves and more, with regular MOT's and servicing throughout its life. You can see all the detailed receipts and invoices in the history and paperwork of the car below. Feel free to ask any questions below, and Roger will get back to you shortly.

A head-turning deep blue GT V8, with chrome pinstripes on this early hatch-back design.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with period-correct MGB GT V8 wheels, they look great and free from any major curbing or marks, showing they've really been cared for over their life.

The tyres on the car look good all-round, with plenty of tread still left on them. Please take a look at the exterior photos for an extensive view of the wheels.

The bodywork looks great on this MGB. Shut lines all looking good from a car from the '60s.

The points to note if we were being really picky is some very small dents, a few small dimples on the front bonnet, one on the nearside wing and rear offside wing. We did also notice a little bit of bubbling beginning to show under the driver's door and a little corrosion at the corner of the rear offside window. Take a look at the media to see the detail.

The deep-sea blue paint looks excellent and vibrant which combines beautifully with the black vinyl interior.

The paint looks even in colour and coat across all the panels.

Glass and Trim

The glass on this car looks excellent for its age. The chrome trim around the car looks excellent too along with the window seals and black rubber bumper. Please view the images and photos to appreciate this MGB.

A classic interior, black throughout and no fuss allowing the driver to focus on the road.

Seats and Carpets

The seats appear in very good and comfortable condition along with the door cards and headlining. Very little wear was observed on our visit, in line with the rest of the car a smart cabin to sit within.

The carpets are also clean and have been given the attention they deserve, please view the images and videos for a look at the interior.

This black dashboard with chrome bezels and sharp dials, they give the MGB GT V8 a really sporty look and are in great condition on this fine example.

All the units are clean, clear, and sharp and no cracks were found. Please take a look at the images for a closer look.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Great to see the original MG three-spoke steering wheel in black leather and gear stick too. Both appearing in great condition for their age.

The final classic MGB featured a light aluminium V8, 40 pounds lighter than the standard iron 4-pot.

Engine and Gearbox

The car features a 0-60 speed of 8s, top speed of 125mph while producing ~137BHP. Roger assures us that the engine is running very well and smoothly just as it should. Please view the MG MGB GT V8 cold start video, where we start the car cold, show you around the engine bay, underneath the car.

A whole host of service and works receipts show how Roger has maintained this car. It had new carbs fitted in 2018 at quite some expenditure to ensure this cars heart beats with vigour for many years to come.

Suspension and Brakes

The GT features independent coil springs in the front and a leaf spring, live axle in the rear. The brakes set up are front discs and rear drums to tame to the lively V8 engine. With the V8 being lighter than the iron 4 cylinder engine, very little adjustment or changes were needed for this iteration of the MGB.

Roger reports both are in good condition and offer a very smooth drive with stopping on-demand performance.

The Drive

The archetypal British sports car, offering great handling and performance from the uprated lightweight V8 block. Roger loved this car so much he's owned it since new for 46 years, and that says a lot.

Electrics and Other

The car features its original electrics with all items are reported to be functional. Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed tour.

History and Paperwork

One owner since new, Roger has always given the MG MGB GT V8 the attention it deserves with over 46 years and ~115,00 miles on the road.

Over its life, the MGB has seen plenty of full-service attention and MOT's as well as replacement parts, to keep it in the condition you see today. The clock has gone all the way around past 99,999 miles with Roger, and now ready at ~15,000, so effectively 115,000 miles with the paperwork to trace this. Roger has even kept the car MOT'd through 2010's even though he has it registered as historic with the DVLA.

The car had some minor damage to the offside rear wing caused by a tire blow-out. Surrey Sports & Classics cut out and replaced the offside rear boot corner and carried out some welding work. They also panel beat and reshaped the wing and wheel arch before painting.

Please note, the private registration will not be sold with the car.

We have actioned our usual checks; Photo ID, V5C, HPi.

Can you confirm whether the gearbox is fitted with an overdrive please?

Hello Chris, the overdrive is on a stalk positioned on the steering column and is pulled after you have engaged 4th gear, ordinarily around 40 plus mph. It operates as the day I bought it in 1975. Regards Roger
