Introduction

Matt Nolan
Professional automotive photographer

With 1960’s styling, the retro Figaro proved its worth when 8,000 were made, and then an additional 12,000 were added to meet demand.

The Nissan Figaro was launched at the Tokyo Motor Show in 1999, using the slogan “Back to the Future”. Built by the Nissan special projects group, the Figaro was one of many niche models made by the company. Others included the Be-1, Pao and S-Cargo, with the Figaro being based on the K10 Nissan Micra.

Nissan gave the choice of Topaz Mist, Emerald Green, Pale Aqua and Lapis Grey as colour options, each of which symbolised a season of the year. Out of the four options, the Topaz Mist has become the rarest colour, as only 2,000 were produced. The cars are convertible with fixed sides, giving the appearance of a hard top from the side on profile. Inside, as standard, you have leather seats, air conditioning, CD player and obviously, the opening roof.

Installed with a one litre 987cc turbo engine, these cars are rev happy. A healthy 76BHP pushed out with the driving position that close to the ground, it definitely feels like much more, whilst still returning a respectable 32 MPG. The cars come with a 3-speed automatic gearbox.

This particular model we have here today is the winter colour of Lapis Grey and is a 1991 model. Tracey is the owner, and with the need for a larger vehicle, it is time for the fancy Figaro to find a new custodian.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Matt after meeting Tracey the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I wanted something fun and usable on a daily basis, the Figaro ticked all the boxes with its retro looks, perfect for the summer.

Tracey is the 3rd UK owner of the charming little Figaro, and has owned the car since May 2021. She had wanted a Nissan Figaro for many years after always loving the look of them, and finally managed to get one that has been well maintained by the previous keeper. Tracey has continued with the care for this car, ensuring it has been dry stored in a garage, as the previous keepers in the UK must have done considering it was imported some 10 years ago.

Even though it was a dream car for Tracey, a change in circumstance with her family means she would like to find the car a new home where it will get a little more use. She'll be happy to answer any questions in the comments section below.

Exterior

The Figaro has a lovely retro look and feel, with the two tone colour and 60’s chrome styling.

Wheels and Tyres

The wheels are in good condition and are finished with the Figaro wheel trims, all of which are in good order.

The tyres are two different makes to the front and rear, which have approximately 4-5mm of tread remaining.

Bodywork

The bodywork on the Figaro is in good condition for the age and mileage, but there are some areas which would benefit from some attention.

Looking around the car, it looks to be free from any dinks and dents. The main areas which need attention is some corrosion to the inner front wheel arches, and the nearside rear quarter, which does have a scuff and some blistering around the wheel arch. There is also some corrosion on the offside rear arch.

The roof is in good condition with no damage to the exterior. It may need some extra tension put on, just to pull it that bit closer to the roof. There is some slight surface corrosion to the edge of the roof and inside the roof channel. Please see the gallery for more detailed images.

Paint

Finished in Lapis Grey, the Figaro doesn't really get any more retro than this. The paint is in good condition, it does look like the car has received some paint at some point in its life, but we would say this was many years ago and possibly even before it came to the UK.

In general there are a few stone chips dotted across the car which look to coincide with the mileage and age. Take a look at the image gallery for more detailed shots.

Glass and Trim

The glass is all in good condition with no noticeable scratches to point out. The windscreen frame does have some paint missing from the outer edge, which you can see in the gallery.

The front chrome bumper is in good order. The rear does have a dent just above the exhaust, and some of the chrome plating has come off as a result of this.

There is also a missing mud flap to the front offside, but this could be easily replaced.

Interior

Ivory leather is used to finish the interior - bringing a light and airy feel, especially when the roof is opened.

Seats and Carpets

The leather seats are in good condition, with just some wear on the drivers bolster which has worn through the piping. The leather itself does show some signs of cracking and age, but it doesn’t appear to have any damage to it. A leather specialist would be able to fill and re-colour the seats.

The small rear seat is in good condition but would benefit from a quick going over with some leather cleaner. The door cards are in quite good condition, there are a couple of nicks to the material and the speaker grills have some slight scuffs to them.

The carpets are in good condition, and have been covered with a set of mats. There is some wear to the mats, but these could easily be replaced. Inside the upper boot is where the roof folds down into, and this is as you would expect. The lower boot has the plastic cover for the spare wheel and jack.

Dashboard

The dashboard is finished to the top with dark blue and the fascia is trimmed in Ivory and looks to be in good condition, with no obvious damage that we could see. It would also benefit from some cleaning to freshen it up. There is a split to the finish just above the instruments which runs towards the windscreen.

The instruments and switches all have a chrome surround which are all in excellent condition, with no tarnishing to be seen. They are all reported to be working as they should, and the odometer has a reading of 128,819 kilometres (80,044 miles).

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed shots.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is finished in Ivory and is in good condition with no signs of wear. The chrome surround to the centre has a good finish to it.

The gear lever is in good order with no noticeable marks to mention.

Mechanics

1.0 litre 4-cylinder turbo-charged engine producing 75BHP and 78 lb-ft of torque, makes the Figaro perfect for city life.

Engine and Gearbox

The 1.0 litre starts up nicely at the first turn of the key. The engine sounds just as it should with no untoward noises coming from the engine bay. There is a small oil leak which we noticed, and this would need cleaning off to investigate where it was actually coming from. A new exhaust system was fitted in July 2017.

The Figaro is fitted with a 3-speed automatic gearbox. The car is reported to pull well through the gears and the change is nice and smooth.

Suspension and Brakes

The car sits well and is nice and level. In 2019, the Figaro had a new suspension arm and wishbone to the right hand side, and a left hand suspension arm in 2017.

There have been new discs and pads fitted in July 2020, along with a master cylinder and a caliper repair kit, ensuring that the Nissan comes to a halt as it should.

The Drive

Definitely a head turner, as you often think that they are older than they are thanks to the retro styling.

For the drive, Tracey has loved her ownership of the car and has enjoyed many miles of trouble free motoring, other than routine maintenance. What’s not to love about taking the roof off and traveling around in something that looks retro but drives like a 90’s car?

Electrics and Other

Everything in the car is reported to be working just as it should, apart from the air conditioning which may just need a re-gas. This would need checking by an air conditioning specialist to confirm.

The indicator and wiper stalks are in good condition with no real signs of any excessive wear. The electric windows operate up and down, but the passenger one is quite slow.

The original Figaro radio cassette is in place, and even that is styled with a retro look to it. There is some slight wear to the centre console where the Ivory paint has come off, an easy enough project for the home mechanic to tackle.

History and Paperwork

Just 2 previous lady keepers in the past 10 years in the UK, has seen the Figaro well maintained and cared for.

The Nissan comes with a nice history file, and has clearly been maintained, as and when necessary. The car has been given a fresh MOT on the 29th June 2021.

The V5 is present which shows 2 previous keepers.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5, and the vehicle is HPI clear.
