One of the most popular Peugeot's ever built, their first foray in to the hot-hatch arena made an everlasting mark.

The Peugeot 205 is a supermini which was introduced in 1983 and remained in production for 15 years, in that time CAR magazine declared it "car of the decade" and it became the What Car? "Car of the Year" in 1984.

In 1984 Peugeot introduced this high-performance variant the 205 GTi featuring a 1.6L XU5J engine, and later the XU5JA like this example with lager valves. The 205 gained plastic wheel arches and trim, beefier front and rear bumper valances, larger wheels, and lower, stiffer suspension. Last year Peugeot announced that their heritage brand "l'Aventure Peugeot" will begin a factory restoration program for the 205 GTi as part of the company's "210th" anniversary. The chose the 205 GTi as it was one of the most desirable Peugeot ever built.

This cracking little 1.6L is in remarkable condition given the mileage and age. A lot of these cars have really suffered, rust and shabby interiors, not the case with this example. It wears it's age well, and could easily be improved with some elbow grease in time for the summer.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting the staff at Prestige & Performance Centre, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

The previous owners have supplied a thick folder full of history and invoices.

The Prestige & Performance Centre offer a range of iconic cars, and this Peugeot 205 GTi 1.6 is now ready for sale.

There's a significant amount of history that comes with the car, presented in a smart A4 ring-binder. Lots of history from the last 20 years or so, and importantly we see that it had a major service with cambelt/tensioners and water pump actioned in 2020.

Please feel free to ask any questions in the comments section below.

Timeless styling, the design of these little hot-hatches has matured .

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with attractive 14" Pepper Pot alloys this 205 GTi really looks the part. The wheels are in great condition with a very minor curb marks on the offside front alloy.

The condition of the rubber is good with plenty of the grip all round for the new owner. Please take a look at the exterior videos and photographs of the 205 GTi for a closer look at wheels and tyres.

Throughout the years the bodywork appears to have been well cared for with no signs of damage, dents or poor repairs. The door shuts and panel fits around the car look great.

There are some great pictures of the car up on the ramp so you can see the underside clearly. It looks well presented with some surface rust visible on bolts etc, but floor pans and sills look solid. Take a look at the videos for a guided tour of the exterior.

The paintwork on this car looks great, even in finish and colour across each panel. There are no signs of heavy traffic/road use with this 205 GTi or day-to-day marks. Only some small areas of cracked paint are visible as defects on the top of the B pillars.

With a deep professional detail and polish, the car would look excellent in time for enjoying in the summer.

Glass and Trim

The glass looks great around the 205 GTi, with no cracks, discolouration or chips observed.

The trim looks good, all in place. Some areas of the plastic trim would come out really nicely with some proper treatment, to get the original black colour back that has faded with time. Overall in good condition and ready for a new owner to take the car to the next level.

The 205 GTi offers a utilitarian interior, with sport flourishes over the standard model.

Seats and Carpets

The interior of this car looks very good, and shows a similar care over time as the exterior. The car has stood the test of time and has really retained its condition throughout the years.

The seats show very small amounts of wear on the bolsters, being a 1.6 it's a full cloth finish, however they look great along with the carpets. View the images and videos for a guided tour of this interior.

The dashboard offers up all the essential information to the driver in a sporty '80s fashion.

The dials and gauges are all in excellent condition and are reported to be fully working.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A GTi styled three-spoke steering wheel puts you in full control of this 1.6L pocket rocket. The steering wheel is in great condition with hardly any wear observed.

The gear stick also looks in great condition and inline with the rest of the car.

A thrilling 115bhp with the short-stroked 1.6L engine famed for being revvy and eager to go.

Engine and Gearbox

This 205 GTi is fitted with a 1.6L XU5JA engine, offering 115bhp of power.

The zingy engine and manual gearbox offer a joyful and fun to drive hot hatch with plenty of power for the chassis.

The engine has been treated to its fair share of services, most notably a major service in 2020. On the cold start, the car sprung in to life and a smooth tick-over very quickly.

Suspension and Brakes

The GTi saw stiffer and lower suspension to offer better handling at speed. Using this car on B roads is guaranteed to put a huge smile on your face.

The brakes and suspension have always been given the attention they deserve, passing its recent MOT's with flying colours. The team at Prestige & Performance Centre report the brakes work exactly as they should with no knocks or noises coming from the suspension.

The Drive

The terrific handling combined with the lightweight and grippy front end is what the 205 GTi is all about. It's not all about the power, it's about how you manage to use it effectively. With these cars, it's often about your skills as a driver and keeping up momentum as you row through the gears.

Electrics and Other

The car features its original Peugeot head unit which is so great to see inside a classic in this condition.

The Prestige and Performance Centre reports all the electrics in the car are working as you'd expect. In the video you'll see the hazard lights were flashing, this was just due to low charge on the battery that rectified itself once the car had warmed up.

History and Paperwork

A superb 205 GTi, a major service last year and in cracking condition at ~93,000 miles.

This car has recently been treated to a fresh minor service/MOT and health check. Prestige & Performance Centre replaced the spark plugs and rocker cover gasket as part of this. Last year it had a major service according to the records that included water pump change along with cambelt etc. It's a cracking example that has worn its years and mileage well.

The only non-standard item we can see is of course the Rallye edition stripes as we don't think this is original to the car.

We've carried out checks on; Seller ID, V5, HPi clear.

This is an auction on behalf of a trade seller and normal auction rules apply, i.e. there is no warranty, no return policy and bids are binding with more info in our terms and conditions.
