Introduction

Jacob Boodrie
Professional Consigner

One of the best-selling French cars of all time, an extremely fun little classic to own and drive.

The Renault 4, also known as the 4L or "Quatrelle" is a small economy car, it's the 60th year since production began, which ran until 1994. Over that time, eight million units were produced, making it the biggest production of a French car to date.

The 4 was Renault's response to the 2CV, improving on Citroën's hit as it began to become outdated. They made a versatile utility car, for the people. It could be a family car, farmer's car, city car with an attractive body shape and enjoyable yet simple driving experience.

The later 'TL' and 'GTL' models of the Renault 4 tend to be more sought after for easier access to parts. The 4 TL featured a top speed of 71mph, from its naturally-aspirated inline-4.

We really like the look of this example, resprayed in its original colour and restored to a high standard by Renospeed. The car has been owned by Amanda for the past 4 years, and she's loved pottering around town in it.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Jacob after meeting Amanda the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

The Renault 4 TL has been the perfect car to start enjoying my retirement in.

After Amanda sold her business and started retirement, she was looking for a cute French classic to enjoy her summers in. She stumbled across a specialist classic Renualt garage in London and instantly fell in love with this restored 1977 Renault 4 TL.

Amanda has really loved pottering around the city in it, and since moving to Dorset finds she herself rarely using it as much as she once did. Amanda and the car were invited to numerous classic meets, 'Simply French' is the next big meet in September, celebrating 60 years since the launch of the Renault 4 at Beaulieu.

Amanda has made the difficult decision to part with the car after 4 years of enjoyable ownership - she will be more than happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments below.

Exterior

Nicknamed the 'blue jeans' car by Renault President Pierre Dreyfuss, the 4 was designed to appeal to a diverse audience.

Wheels and Tyres

The small 13" painted white wheels with chrome hubs really suit this little car. They look in good condition all around, with some very minor marks to the chrome hubs - there is a small amount of corrosion beginning to show around the painted white wheels which would just benefit from a little touch-up paint.

The rubber is Firestone Multihawk 2s and they all appear to have a great amount of tread.

Bodywork

The bodywork looks very straight on this Renault 4 TL example, all the panel gaps look good for a car from the '70s.

During the restoration work, the panels have been given the proper attention they deserve, having been dry stored for the majority of its life, there are very little signs of corrosion.

Please take a look at the photos for a closer look at the exterior of this car.

Paint

Finished in a very attractive period colour, 121 "Marron Glacé Metal", when combined with its chrome trim and detailing it really looks the part.

The finish of the paint is good and even in coverage around the car - after looking at many options, Amanda requested the car to be re-sprayed in a colour original for the year and metallic to maintain the quirky character and good looks.

Glass and Trim

The glass on the car looks really good, with no signs of cracks and chipping.

On the glass panels, the original Renault badging is present. The window rubbers look good too with just the seals around the boot sowing signs of age.

Please take a look at the exterior photos and videos for a closer view of the glass and trim.

Interior

Dash mounted gearshift and oodles of interior space made the 4 a fun and practical cabin to be within.

Seats and Carpets

Full leather tan seats offer you comfort on any journey.

The seats appear in very good condition and in line with the mileage of this car, the vinyl seats appears to have no significant damage, just the slightest signs of creasing. Amanda reports the seats, door cards, and headlining are all original items. We noticed a very small hole in the passenger's seatback.

The door cards tell a similar story, clean and they appear free from significant wear. Rubber mats have been fitted instead of carpets, making it easy to clean the interior - some slight cracks are beginning to show on the rubber.

Dashboard

A simple and traditional dashboard greets you as you step inside the 4 TL.

The dashboard appears in good condition, free from damage and in line with the age and mileage of the car. - the speedo head was changed at 4,388 miles.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel and dash-mounted gear selector appear in original condition and look free from any major wear.

Please view the images and videos for a tour of the interior.

Mechanics

The car copes with city life really well being powered by its 845cc engine.

Engine and Gearbox

A nimble little 845cc can be found in the engine bay of the Renault 4 TL - powerful enough to get you from A to B in style and comfort.

After being in storage for 15 years, the engine had seized up so Renospeed fully rebuilt the engine to a high standard.

We captured a cold start video of the 4 TL which can be found in the mechanical video, the car started straight away with no fuss at all, and Amanda reports no known issues with the car, having had a full-service carried out last November.

Suspension and Brakes

The components and running gear have been worked on during the restoration process.

Amanda reports no issues with the condition of the suspension or brakes and mentions they offer a comfortable ride with prompt stopping power.

The Drive

Amanda loves pottering around London and Dorset in the Renault 4 TL, those who have driven a Renault 4 will understand what a pleasure these cars can be to drive.

Amanda reports simple and joyful ownership with lots of invitations to car meets and events.

Electrics and Other

The Renault 4 TL comes with simple electrical systems, making them easy to maintain. Amanda reports all the electrics, buttons, and knobs work within the car to her knowledge.

She will be more than happy to answer any of your questions in the comments below.

History and Paperwork

A lovingly-cared-for and restored UK RHD drive example of a Renault 4 TL - an attractive and practical classic ready for a new owner to enjoy this summer.

The car was stored in a dry lock-up for 15 years before Renospeed purchased the car, completely rebuilt the engine, and carried out a total overhaul of the brake system. They also repainted the car in a period metallic colour, correct for the year of the car.

A new speedo head was fitted on 18.01.1978 at 4,388 miles. The clock showed 44,938 on our visit, meaning the mileage would be ~49,300. Please take a look at the documentation included in the paperwork.

The number plate was changed from SAL 647R to ROP 786R in November 1996.

Amanda will be more than happy to answer any of your questions in the comments below.

Hello Amanda,
Do you know how many owners this car has had? My wife had exactly the same model in 1972 and loved it! Hence my interest in bidding for your car it would bring back many happy motoring memories for her.
