Introduction

Part scooter, part car and fully insane.

A slight deviation from the usual well-bred supercar or cherished classic that is normally seen with us on Trade Classics. This is a 2012 two-seater Renault Twizy electric microcar. Not just a run of the mill 'common-garden' Twizy but one of just five specially created cars by Oakley Design, best known for preparing race cars. Inspired by the Renault Twizy Formula 1 as promoted by Sebastian Vettel, the F1 theme runs deep throughout the Oakley car. It features an F1 full carbon fibre aero-kit, front wing, side steps and rear splitter to mimic the original.

Clad with Magnesium Formula Renault wheels with Pirelli P-Zero tyres, this is complemented by its Lamborghini LP760 style paintwork. This isn't a car for shrinking violets. Oakley Design is known for their detailed touches, so it's appropriate that the Twizy also includes an F1-style flashing rain light, all-round LED lights and quick release OMP steering wheel.

The five specially produced cars took around a year to prepare and build and were originally created to match up with corresponding supercars in similar liveries, mainly as a vanity project by Oakley Design. The owner then sold the cars privately to owners who would use them to promote their own businesses as well as showcase Oakley's expertise.

So where does this fit into your life? As a practical hack, potentially invaluable. Being a Renault it has safety in mind, with a deformable frame structure, lateral beams and a driver's airbag. And don't forget this is all-electric, so will cost almost next to nothing to run. Unplug and play.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Dom Ginn after meeting Matt the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

This could be a perfect opportunity for a motorsports team or a collector. You could park this next to a Lamborghini, and it will attract more attention!

The car was bought off a private owner back in 2016 to promote a motorsports insurance company, as a result, it was rarely driven under its own power. Matt, the Twizys owner is fairly confident that it has not covered more than 500 miles since he's owned it. Because of the lack of car events over the last year, combined with a loss of storage, an opportunity has come up for someone else to own what is a very unique and charismatic car. The other cars have seen interesting lives since being sold too, with one being used on the Gumball rally, raising 78,000 Euros for charity in the process. This could be a perfect opportunity for a motorsports team or a collector.

Exterior

There is literally nothing like it on earth.

Wheels and Tyres

The magnesium formula Renault OZ Racing alloys and the Pirelli P-Zero tyres are in excellent condition. They should provide you with more than enough traction on the roads with their wide profiles.

Bodywork

Each car is hand-built, which maintains the quality throughout. The finishing of the steel frame with external plastic panels is of a high standard, and they are in excellent condition. The additional carbon-fibre F1 parts are, as to be expected in perfect condition.

Paint

The paint finish is even and deep, as a result of the coloured plastic panels. Finished in a lime green with matching details across the exterior, it'll definitely be easy to spot in the supermarket car park.

Glass and Trim

As expected for a recently built limited-edition vehicle, the glass is in excellent condition. The external and internal trim parts and fittings maintain their quality.

Interior

Wind in your hair motoring without ingesting your exhaust fumes. An electric car with passion.

Seats and Carpets

Continuing with the lime green theme in to the cabin, Oakley Designs work can be seen throughout.

Hard plastics and rubberised water-resistant materials are used throughout the interior which are all in very good condition, with minor signs of light use.

Dashboard

There’s a conventional steering wheel, two pedals (an accelerator and a brake) and just three buttons on the dashboard. The cockpit is in good condition.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The Steering wheel is a custom item, a quick-release item from OMP. There are no signs of wear.

Mechanics

An all electric affair, none of that noisy mechanical stuff we are used to!

Engine and Gearbox

Being a fully electric vehicle, there's no engine. The Twizy runs on a battery-powered ISKRA asynchronous motor with a single gear. With this being an upgraded Oakley Design example, it's fitted with an additional first generation Powerbox. This enables the standard 55Nm of torque to be increased to ~100Nm, and a number of different operation modes that adapt the power/efficiency of the output and charging alike.

The batteries can be charged directly to the household supply and it takes around three-and-a-half hours to charge an empty battery. The integrated charger is compatible with roadside battery charging facilities and the range is said to be at around 60 miles.

Suspension and Brakes

The brakes are in good condition, with no signs of heavy use or abuse. They are relatively conventional designs and are simple items to maintain. The suspension coils are in good condition. Springs have height assistance for better road clearance that can be removed for exhibition race look.

The Drive

The standard Twizy is capable of reaching 50+mph, but the Oakley Design spec is actually faster than the standard car thanks in part to the Kinetic energy recovery system. The silent electric motors, the driving position as well as the attention you will get, makes the Twizy is a totally unique driving experience.

Electrics and Other

The batteries are mounted under the seats and although there is not much other than the motor to power, all of the external electrics and LED lights are in full working order. The batteries have a warranty with Renault for peace of mind.

History and Paperwork

The Twizy has been used for display at exhibitions and shows and therefore not seen much road action in the last 4 years.

One important thing to note is that like most electric cars you do not own the battery and require a warranty policy which has always kept up to date. The new owner will need to agree to take this on to keep the warranty of the battery in place. The cost of this is £55 per month paid to Renault Finance.

Bought off a private owner in 2016, it started life as a white Twizy Urban 80. Following an extensive overhaul at Oakley Design workshops, it has been used for display promotions at exhibitions and not on the road hence, no MOT or tax while it has been earning its keep. The owner will ensure it has a current MOT once sold.
