Introduction

Jacob Boodrie
Professional Consigner

The Volkswagen T1 isn't just any camper, it represents a lifestyle choice.

The Volkswagen T1 Camper was first introduced in 1950, initially deriving from Volkswagen's first model (The Type 1 Beetle). The 'splitty' is extremely desirable and the camper we all want with its charismatic links to peace, love, music, and the hippie movement of the sixties.

The T1 production lasted until 2013 in Brazil, due to the introduction of more stringent safety regulations. During the splitscreen campers hay day, the variety produced was huge, varients such as the flatbed pickup, Westfalia, panel van, or the 23-Window Samba.

David has owned this white over green split-screen for the past 6 years and spent thousands of pounds with VW restoration specialists to bring the van up to the condition you see it in today. This example is a German produced car that was sent to America from new, and then imported in to the UK in 2010.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Jacob after meeting David the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I've owned a few Beetles throughout my twenties, and always dreamed of owning a Splitty, once the opportunity arose, I could let it go.

David bought this T1 around 6 years ago, while on the search for a Volkswagen Splitscreen. During his ownership he has done very little mileage in the car, only taking it out on special occasions and one camping trip where he slept in the awning - meanwhile it's been dry stored in his garage for safekeeping.

David reports this Splitscreen camper was imported to the UK in 2010. When he purchased it, it was in need of some TLC and so he treated it to a full restoration, using only reputable VW specialists around the UK. As you can see from the consignment, David has done an excellent job keeping the quality of the restoration - you won't be disappointed.

After enjoying ownership for a few years, David has decided he'd like a modern camper. He's now decided to put it up for sale and he'll be happy to answer any questions on the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

The classic squared-off split screen, it's an iconic car that draws attention wherever it goes.

Wheels and Tyres

Starting with the wheels, this van is fitted with 14" white painted wheels, with VW chrome hub caps all appear in excellent condition on this example.

The wheels are wrapped in Kuhom tyres which were all replaced in 2016 and appear with plenty of tread for the many journeys that await.

Bodywork

The bodywork looks in excellent condition on this VW T1 splitscreen example, all the panel gaps look good for a car of this age and David reports the car doors open and close with ease.

With the car being kept in the garage, and with very limited use, it all helps to explain the condition since the restoration. Please take a look at the photos for a closer look at the exterior of this car.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed view of the bodywork.

Paint

Finished in green over white, the Van has been subject to a recent respray following the restoration, the finish appears even in finish and colour across all the panels and looks excellent.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a closer view at the paintwork on this car.

Glass and Trim

The glass looks in excellent condition, with no signs of cracks, chips, or discoloration. David reports due to new seals being fitted, the windows can be a little stiff to open, as they haven't beaded in yet.

For a full tour of the exterior of this very special Volkswagen T1 take a look at the media pack below.

Interior

A luxurious multi-purpose cabin, dining room, or bedroom with a light and airy feel thanks to the numerous windows.

Seats and Carpets

The driver's cabin features 3 seats with plenty more space for passengers in the rear of the camper.

The seats have been re-upholstered by professionals and reflect with the rest of the interior in excellent condition throughout with classic seat belts. David has been sure not to miss a single detail during the restoration.

The drivers cabin features rubber mats, and the rear of the van features attractive floor tiles to complete the '60s theme.

Dashboard

A simple and quirky dashboard finished in white gloss to colour-match the exterior.

The condition of the dashboard is in line with its age and car's restoration, with the original dials, switches and knobs all looking in great condition throughout.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a closer look.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Fitted with a classic two-spoke VW steering wheel, the wheel appears in great condition along with the gear shifter.

Please take a look at the detailed 360 tour of this interior.

Mechanics

Rest assured knowing this T1 has seen a full mechanical overhaul carried out by air-cooled specialists.

Engine and Gearbox

After purchasing the VW Splitscreen Camper David swiftly found Irv's Resto Shop, a specialist VW restorer based in Cumbria, and enlisted their help in carrying out a complete restoration costing upwards of £17,000.

As mentioned the mechanics have seen a complete overhaul and appear spotless in the rear of this VW Splitscreen T1.

We captured a cold start video of the Splitscreen which can be found in the mechanical video, the car started straight away with no fuss at all, and David reports no known issues with the car.

Suspension and Brakes

David reports this VW received a complete suspension and brake overhaul during the restoration process, the campervan appears to be riding slightly lower and really does look the part as it cruises down the countryside roads.

David reports to us the car drives just as it should, with no unusual knocks or noises coming from the suspension or brakes.

The Drive

With its charismatic links to peace, love, music, and the hippie movement of the sixties the splitscreen T1 has always been hugely desirable worldwide.

David loves to take the van out on the weekends, and mentions driving the van is a complete joy, with the luxury of being able to open the front windows up, it's ideal for Devons stop-start traffic during the summer season.

Electrics and Other

Fitted with its original retro radio, David reports all the electrics are working on the car to his knowledge.

History and Paperwork

A recently restored T1 LHD Volkswagen Splitscreen with full mechanical and cosmetic attention to preserve this iconic piece of motoring history.

Enjoyed by David for the previous 6 years, with a lack of use more recently and the desire to see the camper used is bringing the vcamperan to sale. Finished in a desirable torquoise over the white and full grey interior, this is one highly desirable and meticulously restored Splitty.

Please take a look at the photos of the paperwork section to see the thousands of pounds spent on parts, maintenance, and restoration over the years. David enlisted Irv's VW restorations for the bulk of the work, Ken's Customs for the cushions and headlining, AH Schofield, N.O.S. VW, and VWheritage for parts and various other mechanical parts and work - please view the media pack below for more details.

This example is a German produced car that was sent to Washington, America from new. It then resided in different locations in the USA up until it was imported from Long Island to the UK in 2010.

Can you please provide the history of the car – where it was sourced (is it an original german production vehicle, a US market model, Brazilian or Mexican production maybe?)? any history on previous owners and what they did with the vehicle? how many previous owners? is it numbers matching? etc, et al. A significant amount of detail is missing from this listing. Many thanks.
