I WANT ONE

Introduction

This vehicle gets sighs and oohs as it's encountered - it's historical, original but eminently practical and useable, and I think the patina really says something but that's a taste thing; subjective.

I bought the van with ideas of taking steady drives throughout continental Europe instead of driving my right hand drive car.

The car had been owned by the widow of the chap who had owned it since its import in 2010, and I'd spotted it thinking it will just waste away unloved.

The lady hung on to the car for another four years after my initial chat with her about me buying it and using it! We finally agreed an amended price due to inflation, Covid, et al. After having anything that prevented it from being roadworthy attended to, I started making my plans.

However, the van project and other different things that I have ongoing were in competition with each other, and after much head-scratching and procrastination, it came second in a two horse race.

Exterior

Often said but really applies here, it's a really interesting original European vehicle with the minimum of titivation undertaken - bit of a tardis too and can take five folk + luggage - hobbies and kitchen sink will all fit in comfortably too.

Wheels and Tyres

Professional bare metal refinish to the period 5-stud alloy wheels and four new tyres were obviously the way forward and looking at the result I'm convinced that the juxtaposed appearance really compliments the van. As well as dispensing with any uncertainty that you can inherit with older / existing combinations. The last thing between you and the road matters.

Bodywork

There are comprehensive photographs all round the van show everything in clear detail. As you can see, before I decided to take it for a fresh MOT I'd borrowed a ramp to get all round / over / under and photographed and video'd my findings.

It's very significant and undeniably true that these vehicles, with the right care and attention will just keep going.

The MOT fail sheet (one bulb, corroded...cleaned and reinstalled, successfully fulfilling the pass requirements) also lists the same advisories that were on a copy of a previous MOT from 5+ years ago.

Paint

The paint is just like the pictures show!

I was either going to wax it or lacquer to show its credentials - one off paint job!

Glass and Trim

All the glass that should be there is there and the trims all keep the rain out.

Any replacements would be very easily sourced as they make spares for every last nut and bolt on these vehicles.

Interior

It looks and feels inviting and very much of its era, i.e. late '60s / early '70s - functional though and a civilised place to share.

Seats and Carpets

The interior is needing a new personal stamp, but it's all fitted currently and could be used straight away.

Dashboard

All the dashboard is in place and all the switches are there as far as I can tell - no voids or obvious omissions.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Springalex 18" aluminium/wooden steering wheel - no power steering on these, so you need a decent wheel!

Stainless gear knob attached to original lever.

Mechanics

I wasn't going to bother with an MOT because my friends a time served old school mechanic and he's been right through everything and confirmed my opinion that it's all working as it should. But MOT'd it and it only failed on a bulb, that was fine later too!

Engine and Gearbox

The engine and box have done less than ~35,000 miles since 1970. Have been maintained as they should and therefore work like they should. Twin, twin choke Weber carbs have recently been balanced and a new supplementary electric fuel pump have been added to aid starting.

Suspension and Brakes

All original specification brake and suspension fittings - all working as they did in the '70s.

The Drive

The van goes through the box (4 speed manual) very well and when you get used to the length of the lever it's a doddle.

You won't beat any land speed records but you'll get there in style and with a smile on your face.

Electrics and Other

All the electrics appear to work as they should, the only aspect that needs attending to was running 2x hoses from the aircooled engine cowling. Not difficult and plenty of suppliers of parts/kits - I'd call it a DIY job.

History and Paperwork

Older vehicles of this type come in very rarely and are mostly the union of various bits from various vehicles. This one, from it's 'Birth Certificate' (see pictures) was purpose built, lightly used and now graces the British roads.

The vehicle underwent very thorough servicing when it was initially imported to make it roadworthy and aesthetically satisfying too. Receipts total well over £3k and that's 15 years ago.

I bought the van and have spent roughly a grand to have a few enhancements and all the necessary safety checks and upgrades done.

The folder with the car documents extensive repairs and maintenance costs carried out, historically. Copies of which can be seen by request.
