The Caterham Seven is one of the purest drives available on the sports car market today.

Colin Chapman's manifesto of ‘Simplify, then add lightness’ has become a fitting tribute over the 58 years of the Seven's existence. That philosophy of a steel space frame, two seats and engine translated seamlessly into the racing world, and proved that you don’t need horsepower to get your thrills. While modern variants of the Caterham Seven have considerably more wack than those early Chapman cars, the exhilarating driving experience remains deep in the car's DNA. The Rover K-Series engines were introduced into the Caterham in 1996, and proved to be ideally suited to the Seven thanks to their lightness and constant development.

Coming to market after ~11 years with our vendor, this 2007 Caterham Seven is fitted with the 1.6-litre version of the K-Series and is finished in a smart Martini-inspired colourway and graphics, with a black leather interior, it has the Supersport upgrade and lowered floors too. It only reads ~11,489 miles on the clock and, as a result, is in excellent working order. It has a year's MOT and comes with its wet-weather gear.

Exterior

The unmistakable styling is accented by its iconic livery and smart presentation.

Wheels and Tyres

The 13” Superlight gun-metal grey 8-spoke alloys are smartly presented, the rear nearside wheels have some surface damage as pictured. The front and rear of the car are fitted with Avon CR500 tyres, showing a spec of 175/55. These are date-coded from 2009. There are mild signs of age on the sidewalls, but they all have legal tread.

Bodywork

The exterior panel work is in good shape, free of dents or creases. The nose cone and wings look good, and the engine cover offers a decent fit. The space-frame chassis, suspension mounts and floor pan look solid, it features lowered floors. There's no issues noted in the engine bay, boot or wheel wells.

Paint

The white paint finish has good coverage and is complemented by a neat Martini-inspired livery. There are a few minor marks and scuffs, mainly focused around the passenger entry area, but otherwise remarkably free of stone chip or road wear damage.

Glass and Trim

The windscreen and its seal are in good shape, and all lights and lenses are tidy.

The chrome displays well, with the headlamp bezels showing minor signs of age.

Interior

A little plushness and comfort adds a lot to the snug, driver focused cabin.

Seats and Carpets

The car is fitted with Series 3 black Leather seats. They show mild age-related creases but are free of damage and provide good support. They are fitted with four-point harnesses.

The Caterham-branded rubber mats are in good shape, and the carpeted luggage area shows careful use.

Dashboard

The facia looks smart, with a full set of working dials and switches. There are a few marks on the centre console padding, but it is free of wear.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The leather momo steering wheel has a few imperfections on the rim. The alloy gear knob looks good, with the surround showing a bit of age as pictured.

Mechanics

Very few, if any, cars offer the same handling and thrills for the money.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine fires up immediately, soon settling down to an even idle. There were no undulations or wobbles, and the dashboard ignition lights all remained off. The car was leak-free during our visit. The 1.6 fuel-injected Twin-cam K-Series engine presents positively, with decent hoses and ancillaries.

Adam went through all of the gears and demonstrated that all the changes, including reverse, were smooth. The clutch is well weighted with no slippage. Watch the video to see the car in action.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension, while firm, absorbed the ruts and bumps with no negative feedback. We didn’t hear any unwanted noises from the wheels.

The car brakes effectively, without knocks or wobbles. The steering wheel remains true when the car slows down and accelerates. The brake pads have recently been replaced. We noticed a little squeal at very low speeds, perhaps indicating a front brake pad issue.

The Drive

Adam conducted the test drive on behalf of Henrik on this occasion and remarked on how exhilarating and involving the car felt once we hit the open roads. It could have been improved by wearing racing boots and driving gloves, but his enjoyment of the drive is clear to see on the Mechanical Review video.

The engine was quite happy in town, with the clutch and gearbox dealing with traffic with relative ease. The absence of significant shakes and rattles and a decent ride quality is a genuine surprise, even when we picked up the pace at 50 mph.

The car remains flat on the road surface, and the grip is nothing short of exhilarating. The exhaust tone around the lanes is intoxicating, and the engine pulls well, particularly impressive in the mid-range. The oil pressure and engine temperature remained in check throughout the drive, and the car started up easily once the engine reached temperature.

Electrics and Other

The wet weather gear is in good shape, with no signs of significant age on the outside - the inside shows mild discolouration. It has decent side screens and visors. The air conditioning works and blows icy.

History and Paperwork

Coming to market from ~11 year ownership from just 4 former keepers, the car has just ~11,489 miles and comes with a years MOT, and is ULEZ compliant and features lowered floors.

First registered in April 2007, Henrik acquired the car in 2014 with just over 9,000 miles on the clock. Since then, he has only added 2,500 miles and when not in use, it has been stored in a damp-free environment. It comes with a year's MOT and wet weather gear.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.
