The Silver Shadow offers an unrivalled combination of luxury, comfort, and a stately driving experience.

In the past, Rolls-Royce were known for its opulent and decadent machinery, with a reputation for producing worthy but rather staid cars for the lucky few. However, the release of the 1965 Silver Shadow was considered a revolution for the company. The crisply designed saloon styling, utilising a monocoque construction, was a visual treat, successfully balancing modernity with tradition.

Further revolution was evident under its skin, with hydropneumatic suspension and braking set-up and a new range of V8 engines, designed for smoothness rather than pace. Gradual upgrades were carried out on the car over its 31-year production run, one of the most notable being the enlargement of the engine to 6.75 litres, which provided 220bhp, resulting in the car becoming even more refined when cruising. Known as the 'Best Car in the World', it became the best-selling Rolls-Royce of all time.

This 1976 example retains the simpler style dashboard and blade bumpers and is finished in the rare Royal Garnet colourway, which was a special order colour for the Royal Rolls-Royces of the era. Fitted with a contrasting tan leather interior, it has seen over £13,500 worth of spending over the last two years, having come off a body and interior restoration in 2020. Last serviced around 500 miles ago in 2024, it comes with its owner's wallet and is MOT and road tax exempt.

Syed has a history of owning prestige and sports cars, but this is his first classic. Syed was taken by the elegant styling and panache of the Silver Shadow; he bought the car via a restoration company and then trusted a Rolls-Royce specialist to bring the car up to a positive mechanical standard.

Exterior

Finished in the rare Royal Garnet paint finish, it is solid and presents positively.

Wheels and Tyres

The 15” wheel trims are cleanly presented, with mild signs of age.

The front and rear of the car are fitted with Avon Turbospeed tyres showing a spec of 235/70 - these are not date coded and therefore likely to be over 20 years old. They show plenty of even tread.

Bodywork

Overall the body presents positively; there are a couple of small treatable dents on the near side panels. All panels are visually flush to the body. The shut lines are consistent, and all doors open and close with ease. There are a few reactive corrosion spots on the car, the most notable were spotted on the top of the nearside front wing, base of A-pillars, tops of both rear door shoulders and bubbles emerging on the roof panel. There are mild signs of age on the lower edge of the panels.

Paint

The exclusive Royal Garnet paint has even coverage and a positive lustre and pleasing deep shine. There are a handful of scratches and marks across the panels; the most notable ones are on the offside front arch and a few on the doors. There are scuffs on the upper sections of the offside panels. We also noted a few paint cracks on the A-pillars, roof, nearside door panels and front wing.

Glass and Trim

The glass and its seals are in good shape, the lights are lenses present well; only the rear nearside lens shows any signs of age. The trim is well-mounted and complete; most of the chromework has a light sheen of age but generally presents well.

The bumpers have mild pitting, while well-mounted to the body, there is damage to the nearside rear corner, and the rear nearside bumper panel has dulled.

Cleanly presented inside, sit back and savour the comfort of the Silver Shadow.

Seats and Carpets

The leather seats are smartly presented with the minimal creases and a few scuffs spotted on the integral armrests.

The crimson carpets are in good shape, with a few marks in places - all were damp-free.

The boot furnishings are in good condition.

Dashboard

The dashboard is in good condition, with positive leather and burr walnut facia presentation. All of the switches and controls are in good shape, and all are said to function, although we didn’t test the tape players.

The centre console has only mild wear, the FM/AM Tape player and the oddments tray are insecurely mounted.

The dials are in good condition; only the key fob face shows marks.

The headlining, cabin trim and door cards are smartly presented.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel presents well, showing a mild mark.

The column-mounted gear lever is in good shape.

Mechanics

Smooth and comfortable, the Rolls is best enjoyed at a sedate pace.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine fires up immediately, with no warning lights flagged up on the dashboard. There was the expected cold engine condensation from the exhaust, but once the engine warmed up, it remained completely smoke-free. There was a little vibration from the engine when idling, but it runs smoothly and evenly with no unwanted noises.

The engine presents well, with plenty of evidence of maintenance, with decent hoses and ancillaries. It has a new fuel pump, and a compression and oil pressure test was carried out in 2024. The header tank and thermostat were replaced in 2021.

The automatic gearbox was proven to operate smoothly, with no reported issues.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension felt comfortable, with no unwanted noises at lower speeds. No negative feedback was felt or heard over the speed humps.

The car brakes evenly with confidence, and no notable issues were felt around town, with no squeals, grinds or vibrations from the wheels.

The brake hoses were renewed in 2024.

The Drive

The 6.75-litre engine promises the experience of silent, effortless power with a muted V8 whirr, rather than a roar. The power is delivered gradually to provide a comfortable and luxurious ride, especially when driven gently, which is exactly the appeal of the car.

Syed demonstrated the car's refinement as we drove along the Surrey roads, where the car performed impeccably. There were no noises heard from any of the mechanical components, the suspension absorbing the roads with ease and no knocks. Braking confidently, with no negative feedback, the car felt reassuring at 40 mph, with very little in terms of rattles.

The engine pulls evenly, remaining composed with no hiccups or undulations at any point. We left the engine running for 20 minutes with no adverse effects.

Syed has not reported any issues in terms of the oil pressure or engine temperature.

Electrics and Other

The car comes with a few spares, mostly lighting items.

History and Paperwork

A lot of time and money has been spent on the car since 2020, yet Syed has been realistic in setting a very keen reserve.

First registered in March 1976, it underwent a recommissioning by a Yorkshire car restoration company in 2020, which obtained it as a stalled project. The renovation was mainly on the exterior, leather reconnolisation to the interior and an engine service. Obtained by Syed in 2023, he took the car to a specialist who rectified existing issues regarding the electrics, engine, braking, steering and cosmetic items.

Over £13,500 has been spent in the last two years, on top of £3,000 spent since 2020. It was last serviced in March 2024, and is road tax and MOT exempt, having passed its last MOT in 2022. It comes with its owner's wallet with a couple of booklets.
