Introduction

Paul Wright
Professional Consigner

The car equivalent of a quirky English pub – boldly stylish and always ready to charm you.

Starting its historic journey envisioned as a luxury sports car designed to compete directly with its German counterparts, the Stag was a true piece of luxury for Triumph; offering excellent interior space, stunning looks, style, and performance. All Stags were four-seater convertibles with a sturdy "T-bar" roll-over hoop, providing both body rigidity and safety, as well as an optional hardtop, which is included with this example. With 3.0L, V8 power under the bonnet, the Stag isn't just a looker; it performs well too, offering comfort and driving ease with its automatic gearbox.

This is a nicely preserved, original British classic with just ~52,297 miles on the clock. It is coming to market from almost ~6 years ownership with our vendor and a current MOT valid until 19.03.2026, and presents well in "Triumph Antique White" over a black interior.

This listing was written from information supplied by Paul after meeting Peter the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I had my first Stag in 1975 in a bid to woo the ladies!

Five years ago, after fancying a trip down memory lane, Peter went on the hunt for another Stag and found this lovely example, which had the same specifications as the one he had all those years ago. Since then, he and his wife have enjoyed some fantastic trips in the classic Triumph.

He goes on to tell us "Spending more than I could afford in 1975, I got my first Stag to impress the ladies, and within two weeks, I met a lady who would eventually become my wife". They've enjoyed making new memories with a Stag again over the past 5 years, and so the car comes to sale as it has been used less more recently, being kept in storage. Peter will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

With a hardtop and a soft top – there’s even a T-Bar thrown in for good measure.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with the original iconic Stag five-spoke alloy wheels. These are in good condition with only a small amount of tarnishing to the aluminium, but nothing that couldn't be polished up again we think.

The tyres are all look in good visual condition with plenty of tread remaining. Please see the image gallery for more detailed images.

image

Bodywork

Walking around the Stag, the panel gaps are even, and there are no dings or dents to point out. There are a couple of small blisters under the paint on the offside rear wheel arch and the nearside lower front wing, where it meets the valance. The car also includes a hardtop, which is in good condition, albeit a little dusty from storage.

We've provided high-resolution images and videos detailing our observations, so please take the time to review all media files for a comprehensive view of the car’s condition.

image

Paint

Finished in what is believed to be the original colour of "Triumph Antique White" (19), the paintwork presents well. There are some minor chips here and there, in keeping with the car’s age, but overall, it appears to be an honest example.

Images are taken from various angles to present the car as you would see it in person. Please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos to form your own opinion on the paint’s condition.

image

Glass and Trim

All windows appear to be in good order, with no noticeable scratches, and the seals seem free from perishing.

The headlights, indicator lenses, and rear lights are all in good condition. Some chrome trim pieces have minor light tarnishing, but nothing excessive as pictured.

Peter has had the hood refurbished with a local specialist in soft top roofs.

image

Interior

A four-seater open-top British classic – perfect for the summer months ahead.

Seats and Carpets

Finished in the original covers, Peter had the foam inside the front seats replaced from specialists Aldridge Interiors LTD, ensuring a firm feel, this padding is specifically to fit the Stag seats. The rear seat and door cards are in good order, with no signs of damage.

The carpets throughout are in good condition with minimal signs of age. The boot is clean and tidy, and the spare wheel and jack are present.

image

Dashboard

The dashboard is in excellent condition, with no splits or cracks on the top or on the wooden fascia. The instruments are working correctly, and the odometer shows a reading of ~52,259 miles at the time of our visit, Peter has covered a few more miles since our visit, the current mileage is ~52,297. There is a small amount of crazing to the fascia of the speedometer.

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original steering wheel is in good condition, with no signs of excessive wear, and the original automatic gear lever looks good too.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

image

Mechanics

3.0-litre V8 – the perfect engine for a British open-top classic.

Engine and Gearbox

During Peter's ownership, he was fortunate to have the car stored next to an old-school mechanic who specialises in Triumph Stags. This means the car runs superbly, firing up without hesitation and running with no issues reported during our visit, Peter did tell us it can take a couple of attempts when cold but a bit of choke can help with this.

The three-speed gearbox shifts as you would expect – not as smooth as a modern automatic, but just enough to remind you you're driving a British classic.

Peter has had a new cooling system fitted by the Stag specialist mentioned earlier, this consists of a Kenlowe fan, triple-core radiator and new water coolant system fitted, this helps resolve the common issue of overheating.

image

Suspension and Brakes

On the road, the Stag is excellent fun to drive and pretty effortless, easily cruising along without a care in the world.

There are no knocks or bangs coming from any corner of the car, and the car stops in a straight line with no juddering through the pedal.

image

The Drive

What a great classic to be in! The '70s icon stands out and draws a nod of appreciation at every set of traffic lights. The sound of the V8 is music to your ears, and the whole experience of driving a British classic is a joy with this 1977 Triumph Stag.

image

Electrics and Other

All of the switchgear in the Stag is said to be working correctly, including the electric windows. An upgraded Kenwood head unit has been fitted, and speakers have been installed in each door panel.

image

History and Paperwork

Coming to market from almost ~6 year ownership, the car has an impressive history file dating back to the 1980s, and the car presents well, supplied with its hard top.

There are a healthy collection of invoices for the Stag, which have been collected over the years and saved by various keepers. There is also the original Triumph Passport book, which has nine stamps. Finishing off the history is a collection of MOT certificates dating back to the 1980s. It has a current MOT valid until 19.03.2026.

We’ve conducted our usual seller checks, including photo ID, V5, and have also actioned a history check on the vehicle. This is a professional check by HPI that highlights whether the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or has any outstanding finance. Please note: This does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our view of the car based on information from the seller above. As you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in high-resolution detail – this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. Please sit back, have a cuppa, and take your time to review everything in this listing to assess the vehicle's condition.

Viewings are also welcomed for all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time – we just need to speak to you first and receive valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you’re unsure about, no matter how small, please ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can’t be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car – just like in a traditional auction house.
