In the history file of Adam’s E-Type is an original printed instruction leaflet for the cleaning of the leather – here’s the transcript below:

CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS

Waterproof coloured finished such as ‘VAUMOL’ brand – wsh the leather thoroughly with warm water and pure non-caustic soap, (Glyerine) or with CONNOLLY’S CONCENTRATED CLEANER.

If the Concentrate Cleaner is used, proceed as follows:

Make a solution of one part of cleaner to twelve parts of warm water (the cleaner must not be used in its concentrated form).

Immerse a soft cloth in this solution wring out the cloth and rub lightly the surface to be cleaned. Avoid flooding and change the surface of the cloth frequently.

In order to remove any residue, repeat the operation with a fresh cloth damped with clean water. Dry well with a soft cloth.

A small brush such as a nail brush (not too hard) can be used to remove dirt which has become ingrained in cushions or the top corners of the seat.

If using ordinary soap and water, the procedure is similar but it is emphasized that caustic soaps and detergents should be avoided.

On no account should quick cleaners be employed as such agents whilst removing dirt very effectively, may damage the surface finish of the leather.

An occasional use of ‘CeeBee’ Hide Food is recommended after the leather has been in use for a year or two.

So there you go – that’s how informative leather cleaning instructions used to be.  Let’s all get our nail brushes out but remember… not too hard now 🙂
