Recent Buyer Review – Eamonn McParland on 11th May “From my first general enquiry through to the purchase of my very own MGA, Adam and the team at Trade Classics were quite simply, awesome.  I fully recommend Trade Classics without hesitation nor reservation to everyone who is seeking a classic car.  A brilliant business model, supported by a really neat and usable website though ultimately managed by a great group of professional, sincere and trustworthy people”. HISTORY LESSON

The BMW 8 Series is truly an iconic car and it was much ahead of its time when it was launched in 1989 at the Frankfurt Motor Show. What a spectacle it must have been back then, something space age and arguably far more technically advanced than any other car at that time.

Unlike the V12 version of the 8 series, the V8 versions featured quad round exhaust tips on the rear. They also featured a 5 speed semi-automatic gearbox, with an option in some regions for a 6 speed version.

Circa 31,000 8 series were produced in a production run that ran all the way through to 1999 in Europe. Due to emission standards, and the economic impact of the recession in 90s, the model was actually pulled from the North American market in 1997.

THE CAR & MARK

This lovely example of an 840i is owned by Mark. Mark has owned this car for nearly three years and has built a beautiful car collection of over fifteen cars with the help of his brother-in-law; Rob Carrigan. Mark loves the thrill of buying the best examples he can, once added to his collection he then enjoys driving them when he’s in the country. Mark really does only buy the best-of-the-best examples, and we are very fortunate to be handling the sale of his collection.

So why is Mark now selling his collection? Well, Mark is based overseas and these days he doesn’t get the opportunity to drive his collection as much as he’d like, as more recently his business opportunities are keeping him abroad, so the time has come to pass the cars to new custodians.

Rob looks after the collection for Mark and no expense has been spared in the maintenance of the vehicles. Rob makes sure that whatever the cars need are actioned straight away using specialist garages and original parts. Even the finest indoor covers have been purposely made for each individual car at a cost of over £300 each, and are included in the sale. Every car is securely stored in a new and dry professional unit, as can be seen in our media footage.

EXTERIOR

This 840i is finished in red, and this particular 8 series was one that Mark used in Hong Kong before importing here for sale. Although a low mileage example, having been used it has some wear in the form of stone chips etc that have been detailed and visible in the media.

Wheels & Tyres
18 inch BMW alloy wheels are wrapped in Goodyear tyres across the car (235/40R18). The wheels and tyres present very well, there is some curbing on the alloys, take a look at the video review for inspection.

Bodywork
The bodywork on the car presents in good condition. There was a parking dent on the near side door observed, you can see this in the video review. The front of the car also suffered some parking damage on the nose in between the kidney grills. This has been professionally repaired as can be seen in the images and video. No rust issues were observed on the bodywork.

Paint
Finished in Red, the paint across the car is even, and over the course of time it looks to have been resprayed. There are stone chips across the front splitter where you would expect, and a few other small chips to the paint on the back of the car. These can be observed in the video review. On the front splitter there is some yellow showing from pen markings that just need to be washed off post the car having work completed on the nose.

Glass and Trim
The glass and trim across the car generally present in very good condition. Being a car that Mark used in Hong Kong, he made some updates to the car to his taste. The black plastic trim on the bodywork has been painted red to match the bodywork of the car.

INTERIOR

Finished in white leather with red piping and light grey carpets throughout, the interior on the car really suits it.

Seats and Carpets
The leather seats are in very good condition, little to no wear was observed. The carpets also look good throughout. Take a look at the videos and images to see for yourself.

Dashboard
All the gauges and lights work as they should do, as observed in the “on the road” video.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick
Both present in line with the cars age in good condition. The gear stick indicator seems to have slipped, so it shows one position down from the actual gear that has been selected.

MECHANICS

Powered by a 4.4L V8 block, we took the car on a test drive around the local area, details on how it performed below.

Engine and Gearbox
Cold start procedure was completed without issue, and we took a drive in the smooth V8 around the local area. Whilst we were on the test run, I didn’t observe any jolting as the car would build speed or slow down, from the gear changes.

Suspension and Brakes
On the test run, the car performed without fault. As a passenger the ride was very comfortable, and no knocking/rattling/squeaking was observed as a passenger from the suspension or brakes.

The Drive
As H describes in the “On The Road” video, the car is very smooth to drive and cruise in as it was designed to be.

Electrics and Other
We checked all the electrics on the car, and everything works as it should, as you can see in the interior review video.

HISTORY

The car is showing just over 43,297 as of 08.01.2019.

OUR SUMMARY

The 8 Series is maturing nicely and moving from ‘modern’ to ‘proper’ classic status with every year that goes by.

This 840i with its 4.0L V8 engine is a really nice GT. Fully loaded with electric seats, windows, sunroof, climate control, heated seats, stereo, you can cruise along listening to the burble of the V8 in absolute luxury.
