AUCTION CLOSED

This car didn’t meet its reserve price at auction, now available for £9,995 inclusive of our buyers premium.

This Mercedes model is a proud vehicle – a true personal luxury car that has stood the test of time – as solid as ever. In a black coating, this beautiful looking coupe has been owned by William and his wife for the last three years. They have loved standing out in the busy crowds of London in such a stunning convertible. Please read what we have to say about the car and review all the media whilst we were inspecting the vehicle.

If you have any questions you’d like to ask William (the owner) then please click here to send him a message – William will get back to you asap.

TRANSPORTATION

7 our of 10 people that buy cars via our service don’t feel the need to visit the vehicles – instead they trust our service, due to the transparency and thoroughness of our listings and we then help arrange transportation too, delivering anywhere in the UK or mainland Europe – please see happy customers in our reviews that we’ve helped.

Recent Buyer Review – Simon Welsh on 1st May “Found my ideal 90’s sports car on Trade Classics. Living in Bournemouth and the car being in the Midlands I relied heavily on the advert, photos and videos.

On picking the car up I wasn’t disappointed. Everything was as it had been described. So I got straight into it and drove home. What a drive put a smile on my face.

Thanks very much Trade Classics and I’m now looking out for my next classic to add to the collection.”.

THE CAR & WILLIAM

William has a passion and love for classic Mercedes automobiles. In our ‘Meet the Owner’ video he describes himself as someone who likes to stand out and with this car there is no exception. William is currently looking to sell two of his beloved Mercedes – this beautiful 280 SL and a 280 CE – in order to gain funds to buy his ideal model, the SLC. We at Trade Classics are sure that William will be sad to see this model go, and who knows, he may be on the phone to us to cancel one of his sales if he cannot find the right SLC.

This ‘Meet the Owner’ video is covering the two cars that William is aiming to sell with us, but all the technical information in this video is about the SL.

We thoroughly enjoyed talking to William about this beautiful car. Please see all of the media we have gathered from this to fully understand the drive, the work that needs to be done and to see if this vehicle is the right one for you.

EXTERIOR

The black paint of the car gives it a classy and elegant look and definitely turned some heads in the Hammersmith area. Upon our inspection we have noticed some ageing as you would expect from a car of this age. Please look at all the photos and videos to gain a complete perspective for yourself.

Wheels & Tyres
This comes with classic Mercedes alloy wheels, in good condition.

Bodywork
You’ll notice from the images that the offside front wing has a bubbling around the indicator – the new owner may think it’s best to replace this with a new wing in the future. The good news is the car has had bodywork repaired in the past and looks to be a good standard – e.g. the sills and wheel arches are all in good order. One thing to note is there is also slight dent on the boot. After our inspection William has replace the chrome trim. Please review all images and photos to review the full condition.

Paint
The paint is generally in good condition as you can see from the images and videos. We do think it would benefit from a machine mop and polish.

Glass, Trim and Other
The glass around the whole car is in good condition upon our inspection. We recommend replacing the roof as this has two holes in that is susceptible to rain. Also the rubber on the rear trim is showing wear.

INTERIOR

Please watch our ‘On the Road’ video as William takes us around the Hammersmith area. The engine generally sounded and felt, really good. All of us at Trade Classics were impressed with the overall functionality of the vehicle. A really pleasant experience.

Seats and Carpets
The seats are looking in good condition, however, there is a rip in the driver’s seat. Please see the photos to look for yourself.

Dashboard
The dashboard looks in good condition and has a beautiful wooden finish by the stereo and near the gear stick.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick
Both are in excellent condition with no issues. Still has original steering wheel and gear stick.

MECHANICS

Our consigner Glyn had the pleasure of sitting alongside William in our ‘On the Road’ Video. He tested the engine in the ‘Cold Start’ section at the start, there is no cause for concern. William gave it a spirited rev also which highlighted no problems to us.

Engine and Gearbox
Effortless automatic gear changes that are not riddled with any extra noise from the engine.

Suspension and Brakes
The brakes bring you to a nice stand still and still work as expected. The soft suspension gives you a smooth ride in any urban area.

The Drive
The pedals are not spongy. As well as this, the power steering caused no unwanted noise and has all the elements of a classic Mercedes. The overall drive was very pleasurable.

Electrics and Other
All the gauges are working well, however, there is no stereo fitted at the time of inspection. William assures us the lights work fine and says no major problems seem to be there with the electrics. After the inspection William has had the arial fixed meaning the stereo works.

HISTORY

There is a very good service history as well as a file of documents for you to examine all the work that has been done on the car.

Current indicated mileage is 110,657 miles on 29/10/2019.

OUR SUMMARY

If you’re a driver who is confident in their own style, it’s the one for you. This car looks great in our photos, and we know, with a little TLC and extra care, this machine can look amazing whilst you cruise through your local area. This is truly a classic car for anyone who loves the typical Mercedes style of that era.

William has priced this Mercedes very competitively as he knows the market and is hungry to buy that SLC he has always wanted.

advice request from those more experienced than I please:

1. All along the tops of the sills there are holes/rivet heads/poppers… what’s missing here please?

2. The engine photos make it appear that the exhaust manifold is broken and instead of replacing it someone has tried to glue it together with filler – I know that’s a big job to replace so please please please tell me I’m wrong!

Hi doctorm, thanks for the questions, i’ll try my best to answer, and hopefully William might jump in too;

1. I think you are referring to the jacking points at the bottom of the sills

2. I’m not sure what this is, I think we need to get William to answer, or perhaps even try and take it off. It almost looks like it might be some spilt paint.

Thank you so much Mr Salh. I did try William first but he didn’t respond. You have been most helpful and I am grateful for your time and advice. I’ve been looking at photos of other SLs and I think it’s the chrome trims along both sides that run along the tops of the sills that are missing. Looks terrible but shouldn’t be crazy expensive to fix. The problems with the front wings and the hardtop and the bumpers are all very honestly presented and we know about the holes in the soft top. As for the (cracked?) manifold who… Read more »

No problem! I spoke to William earlier and asked him to check it out for us, but haven’t heard back from him this afternoon to confirm on the marking on the manifold. I’ll let you know if I hear something back.

presumably reg no is redacted throughout to prevent me from checking MoT history?

Hello – no that’s not the case. It’s to protect the identity of the car, i.e. so someone doesn’t use it to put on another 280 SL and drive around illegally. We have actioned HPi and MOT checks and can supply you with the registration number if you call us on 01926 426 635 or drop us a direct email via the Contact Us page. cheers.
