Introduction

Colin Bashford
Professional Consigner

The successor to the iconic E-Type, the XJS retains the luxurious racing heritage and has quickly become Jaguar's next appreciating classic.

The XJS is a luxury grand tourer produced by Jaguar from 1975 to 1996. Based on the XJ saloon platform and was noted for the unique prominent rear flying buttresses with early styling drawn by Jaguar's best aerodynamicist Malcolm Sayer.

Considered as one of the best looking and desirable XJS models ever produced, the convertible was a proper open-top luxury GT, with an electric hood mechanism, strengthened front section and subframe which could be constituted as a new car in its own right.

This "Sapphire Blue" over "Ivory" example was exported to Hong Kong in 1996, whereby it was garaged and enjoyed as a weekend car, hence the low mileage. The current owner purchased the car just over a year ago, and had it re-registered in the UK to enjoy over the summer.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Colin after meeting Pete the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I've always admired classic Jaguars, the sound, styling and sense of luxury have always appealed to me.

Pete has always had a fascination with Jags, and from a young age always admired the Mark 2, E-Type, and then XJS. He mentioned his uncle owning one in the early 80s, and remembers being in awe of the luxury sports car.

When Pete began looking for his dream example, he had a list of criteria; a 90s example, powered by the 4.0L six-cylinder AJ16 engine, and one that wasn't suffering from typical corrosion that comes with age. Some of Pete's close family live in Hong Kong, and while searching for an example in the UK, his family found this example which had been exported there. The condition and low mileage of the car really sold it to Pete, he had the car inspected and shortly after purchased it, shipping it back to its place of manufacture and re-registering the car with DVLA.

Pete's main passion lies with classic motorbikes, and mentions to us space is a premium in his already crowded garage. Something has to give, and so after scratching the itch, this lovely 4.0L XJS us now up for auction. He will be happy to answer any of your questions in the comments below.

Exterior

The aerodynamic body and sleek styling of the XJS still look gorgeous today, this example in fine fettle thanks to limited use in Hong Kong.

Wheels and Tyres

The car sits on 16" 5-spoke star-shaped alloys, all of which look in excellent condition with no wear worth noting.

The wheels are wrapped in Bridgestone Turanza GR-100's tyres all round, dated 2017 and appear in great condition with no significant wear to note. The tyres appear to have a good amount of tread. View the photo gallery and video review for details.

Bodywork

The XJS gained a more aerodynamic front and rear bumper, we love how the style has stayed pretty consistent since the 70s.

The bodywork looks very straight on this XJS, all the panel gaps look good, and Pete reports the car doors open and close with ease. The car has enjoyed a warm and dry life in Hong Kong which has helped with the preservation of the panels.

We have taken hi-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in a lovely "Sapphire Blue Metallic", the paint looks even in colour and coverage across each panel, and the condition is in line with the age and mileage of the car. The car has had some use during the past month, all it wants is a deep clean and polish now.

Again, please take time to review all the images and videos showing the paint from different angles and reflections, to assess the condition for yourselves.

Glass and Trim

The glass looks in great condition across the car, along with the trim. All the window rubbers and seals appear tight with no signs of excessive wear or degrading visible. There is the slightest bits of de-lamination visible to the bottom of the windscreen, and a minor advisory noted on the most recent MOT.

The chrome trim around the car looks in great condition in line with the rest of the car.

Interior

Designed with luxury inside, the XJS allows you to cover any length of distance with comfort and ease.

Seats and Carpets

Fitted with luxurious ivory leather touring seats and deep pile carpets. The seats look really good in this car with some usual minor wear to the driver's seat and a few minor creases as you would expect.

The carpets, convertible headlining, kick plates, and door cards too look in great condition in line with the age and mileage of the car, view the video for the full interior cabin tour.

Dashboard

The dashboard appears in great condition with no obvious signs of wear, the controls and dials reflect the mileage and use of the car.

Watch the video review to see all of the dashboard.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The black leather steering wheel matches the rest of the trim in the car and is presented in excellent condition. The automatic shifter and centre console look in good condition too, the wood veneer surround looking very smart. Some of the veneer on the dash shows signs of ageing and some cracks as pictured.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a closer look at the interior.

Mechanics

All the power comes from the bulletproof 4.0L straight-six, a highly practical and sought-after option in this late model.

Engine and Gearbox

In 1994 substantial revisions were made to the 4.0L AJ6 engine and it was given the new name of AJ16, now equipped with coil-on-plug ignition. This uprated engine was renowned for being robust and reliable whilst still offering that silky smooth motoring you expect from a Jaguar.

The car started the first time in our cold, watch the mechanical video to hear and see it spring to life. We also went out on a short run on the local roads so you can see the car in action, going through the gears and navigating traffic with ease.

Suspension and Brakes

Due to its warm lifestyle on the island of Hong Kong, this XJS appears to have lived an easy life. Pete had the car professionally inspected before shipping it back to the UK last year.

He confirms the suspension and brakes are in full working order with no unusual sounds or vibrations when driving.

The Drive

A silky-smooth drive awaits, with effortless power from the mighty straight-six. Pete loves getting behind the wheel of this XJS, and mentions he'd love to see it getting more use and attention from a like-minded enthusiast.

Electrics and Other

All of the electrics on the car are said to be working, including the lighting, locking systems, and fully adjustable heated seats. The two remote alarms have been disabled on the car to prevent malfunction that can come with age.

History and Paperwork

This XJS should tick many boxes; UK RHD, low ownership and mileage, in a stunning Sapphire Blue over Ivory colourway.

Pete imported this car to the UK from Hong Kong last year. He mentions it was used by the previous owner as a Sunday driver, hence the light use since 1996 and the condition you see it in today. Pete will be more than happy to answer any of your questions in the comments below.

Just to clarify, it was originally registered in Britain from new; then exported?
