Introduction

Glyn Parry
Professional Consigner

The 911 SC has rocketed in price over the last couple of years, and the reason, well it's a fantastic air-cooled 911 making them hot property - let alone a Sport model in Martini livery.

Something of landmark model for Porsche, the 911 SC was created to broaden the appeal of the car following the evolutionary progression of the Carrera and Turbo version. The SC offered a more manageable power delivery with some very useful driver upgrades, without compromising anything the 911 stood for. When the 911 SC was launched in 1978, Porsche was somewhat preoccupied with their new water-cooled cars but the public proved that there was still life in the air-cooled legend. The Sport model was partly responsible for this continuous demand, the whale tail spoiler, 16” Fuchs alloys, sports seats and uprated suspension helped to define what became one of the best selling variants of the air-cooled 911s.

Specified as a UK only model, this Sports Group Package, SC Sport has benefitted from decades of care and attention. It has been used and enjoyed and not just stored away. Modified in its early years, the car has seen a high level of maintenance and care since, all of which is documented in the considerable pile of paperwork.

It was subject to a 4-year partial restoration in 2006 and has seen continuous mechanical attention to maintain the 911s excellent reputation for reliability.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting John the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

The ideal car to use and take to shows - you'll be the centre of attention.

The car has had a very charmed life but has also been used and well maintained at the same time.

John, the owner, bought the car nearly five years ago, after the previous owner had it for around eighteen years. John has maintained that duty of care whilst continuing to use the car, as he can depend on its reliability - only in fine weather of course. John has taken the car to the Bicester Scramble and other classic shows where it always gets admiring glances.

These days John isn't using the car as much as he once did, and so has decided to find a new owner.

Exterior

The presentation is simply exquisite and who doesn't love a Martini stripe - this car is coolness on another level.

Wheels and Tyres

The Continental ContiSportContact tyres are in very good condition, they all date from 2017 and were fitted at the same time.

The 16" Fuchs alloys are straight with no significant marks, with age-related weathering.

Bodywork

The bodywork has benefited from years of careful ownership and there are no issues that stand out to suggest accident repair. The panels are straight, with no significant dents or damage, other than a small ding observed on the top left-hand side of the luggage lid.

The doors open and close with no issues and they hang well off the hinges.

Both the engine and luggage bay areas are solid, with no evidence of corrosion, with the underside of the car in a similarly solid state.

This has to be one of the best SCs on the market today.

Paint

The paint finish is excellent, with no signs of significant stone chips.

The finish has a good lustre, and the paint coverage is even and there were no issues with the lacquer.

The distinctive Martini livery is not factory fitted but was applied early in the cars life.

Glass and Trim

Detailing is paramount on the 911, and the exterior does not disappoint. All the glass, including the rubbers and seals, are in good condition with no significant damage.

The operation of the electric window lifts is a little slow but this is usual on these cars due to the tight weather strip.

The whale tail is correct for the SC model and this car has the delete rear wiper option.

The bumpers and surrounding rubber seals are all good.

Just one small point to note, there is a small crack on the rear centre reflector.

Interior

This is an exceptional 911 inside and out - it was subject to a tasteful interior refit that was performed to a very high standard.

Seats and Carpets

The interior was subject to an overhaul around 25 years ago, replacing the original brown finish with a grey.

The seats are in good condition, with minor signs of ageing, i.e. the odd scuff but well above the average condition of a car of this age.

The carpets, both in the cabin and luggage areas are clean and in good order. The door cards are in good condition too, with the door pockets boxes in very good condition, with no suggestions of repair.

Dashboard

The dashboard looks fantastic, it is in good visual condition with no cracks, significant blemishes or damage observed.

All of the gauges, switches, controls (including the clock) and dials are said to be functional. The speakers are all aftermarket items and the Porsche / Blaupunkt stereo cassette radio unit with electrical aerial is well suited for the period.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Both are original items and in good condition.

The distinctive steering wheel shows a little fading but it is not a significant distraction.

Mechanics

The high level of mechanical attention retains the brand's reputation for reliability.

Engine and Gearbox

The cold engine start did not pose any problems for the car, it fired up with no drama and without any notable engine damage noises. The engine is said to use very little oil in between its 5K oil servicing.

The exterior impression of the air-cooled engine suggests regular maintenance and use, it has been subject to regular rolling-road tests, as well as the annual fluid checks.

The dashboard lights remained off during the start up.

The exhaust is in physically good order, with no blowing.

The gearbox is said to be fully functional with no issues.

Suspension and Brakes

All the running gear is said to be in well-maintained order, major components have been replaced in the past and it is subject to regular brake fluid changes.

The brakes visual condition supports its meticulous maintenance regime.

The Drive

The car has been subject to an impressive amount of renewal, with its proven reliability and recent attention to the suspension and brakes mean that the car drives really well.

It has obviously got to an age where it should only be used part-time but, with its high level of finishing, impressive history, driving experience and arresting looks, you have the closest thing to an ideal classic car.

Electrics and Other

As expected for a car that has been well looked after, the electrical system is in line with the rest of the condition of the car.

History and Paperwork

The well looked-after 911 comes with an impressive history, documenting almost every moment of its life.

Originally registered in Henley in 1979, the car has seen 11 keepers over its 42-year history, but each one has kept on top of the issues and there are no real signs of neglect evident both physically or in the paperwork.

Early in the car's life, it was subject to an engine upgrade, which includes Turbo anti-roll bars, lightened flywheel, LSD, hydraulic chain tensioner, removal of the air pump, uprated camshafts and the addition of the iconic martini stripes. The car comes with decades worth of paperwork, documenting much of the car's history with all of its MOTs and includes some of the cars original sales invoices as well as a detailed analysis of the work carried out, including an interior refit in 1996.

During the previous owners 18 years of custodianship, not only did he keep on top of its servicing needs, with oil changes every 5,000 miles, but also undertook a four-year restoration in 2006 which included hunting down as much corrosion as possible, resulting in new inner and outer front wings, sills and B pillars. At the same time, the suspension was renewed, along with more recent work including overhaul the brake calipers, new rear wheel bearings, new heater fan and shock absorbers.

In more recent times, John's care has included annual oil changes and continuous maintenance / upgrading of parts. John has replaced the tyres, installed a stainless Dansk sport exhaust, replaced the clutch cable, some engine oil hoses, installed turbo tie rods and in the last few months replaced the fuel filter and spark plugs and installed a new battery.

The private registration plate has been on the car for much of its life, and John feels its part of the car's heritage and it is included with the final price. The last MOT was carried out 3 years ago, but as the car is subject to exemption this should not be an issue considering its high level of care.

Good morning
I’m looking at the Porsche 911 auction.
I’ve been through all the documentation etc.
A couple of non standard features that are unfamiliar to me, the bolts through the rear floor and the cut-out and holes in the lower front panel.
Do you know their purpose?
Many thanks Andrew
