Introduction

Glyn Parry
Vehicle Consigner and Photographer

Porsche enjoys a special place as producers of iconic, beautifully engineered, high performance sports cars - the 924S was no exception.

Introduced in 1976, the Porsche 924 enjoyed a production run of 12 years resulting in sales of over 150,000 cars. In the design, Porsche focused on improved aerodynamics leading to the flat bonnet, pop up headlights and rear spoiler. The car set a new direction for the company by using a water-cooled, front mounted engine for the first time.

From 1986 onwards, the 924S was introduced which used a Porsche designed 2.5-litre four-cylinder in-line engine, already being successfully utilised in the 944. In fact, the 924S inherited not just the power unit from the 944 but also the braking system, chassis components and parts of the interior. The initial 2.5 Litre engine delivered 150BHP but this was further enhanced to 160 BHP from 1988, enabling 0-60 in under 8 seconds and a top speed of 134MPH.

This car is a 1988 924S which means it has arguably the best specification of the 924 model range. In classic Porsche "Guards Red" with Porsche script interior, this car comes to auction in Canon livery as a tribute to the 924 GTR race team. This 924S is in great shape having covered less than ~9,000 miles in the last decade. The interior is in fabulous condition and the car sounds amazing. What's more, the whole package is fantastically affordable - what a way to welcome the spring and summer of 2022.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting Harvey the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I love the classic 70's shape - sloping back, pop up lights, rear spoiler and high waistline.

Harvey has owned several classics including a 911, two 944's and a 968. A Porsche fan to say the least. "I wanted something just a little bit different - after seeing many pictures and being impressed by the bodywork, general condition and dedication to it I bought the car".

He goes on to say, "The car is practical and great fun - I’m just not using it enough but the new owner will have a reliable and fun classic to use on a regular basis without the headache of many other classics". Harvey will be happy to answer any of your questions about the car in the comments below.

Exterior

A tribute to the Canon Cameras GTI race team, the branded livery looks fantastic against the gleaming Guards Red paintwork.

Wheels and Tyres

The Teledial wheels also used on the 944 look in very good condition with no significant marking or damage. The wheels are shod with Toyo Proxes all round bearing 2019 date marks. The tyres look in great condition with good tread remaining.

View the photo gallery to see them up close in detail.

Bodywork

The car stands straight and we didn't notice any damage to the bodywork. Shut lines appear straight although there is a slight widening of the gap towards the top of the nearside door. Both doors, boot and bonnet open and close cleanly and precisely.

As part of the tribute to the Canon race models this car has a Turbo/Carrera front nose fitted with the air vents, side skirts, deeper front spoiler and rear spoiler from a 968.

Paint

In stunning Guards Red the paint, while it is not concourse level, it is very good. There is no obvious evidence of orange peel and the colour and shine are even and consistent right across the car. There is some minor micro blistering on the front left wing and some small marks behind the sunroof. On the whole very good for a 34 year old car.

Check out the images which are taken from different angles and reflections to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. Please take the time to fully assess the condition.

Glass and Trim

Glass is clear and unbroken with no significant scratching or marks. The trim also appears very good and the badging, while showing some signs of ageing, really enhances the cars appearance.

As mentioned above, this car has been fitted with a few extras such as the spoiler, side skirts and nose to the front, to give it a proper racing look.

Interior

Combining functionality with style - this interior feels fit for purpose and is a great place to be.

Seats and Carpets

The contrasting Porsche branded seats are in remarkably good condition. They are comfortable and provide great support, the bolsters are only showing minor wear and the rear seats appear largely unused.

Carpets show very little signs of wear and are covered by floor mats in the front. View the video review to see the cabin in full.

Dashboard

Typically Porsche, the dash is clearly laid out with instruments easy to read. The perspex faces appear undamaged and show no signs of misting. One thing to note is some very slight cracking across the top of the dash.

We have taken many high resolution photographs of the interior. Please take the time to study these carefully to really appreciate the condition of this car's interior.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The leather covered steering wheel and gear lever are in great condition and beautifully styled. Familiar items that were used in period across the model range from Porsche.

Mechanics

The 944 derived 2.5 litre, 160BHP engine is the final and best unit fitted to these cars, plenty of power for a diminutive classic like this.

Engine and Gearbox

Representing the pinnacle of 924 development the "S" benefits from the front mounted, 2.5 litre, in-line, four cylinder engine driving the rear wheels through a 5 speed manual gearbox. Factory figures confirm this can propel the car to a top speed of 134MPH and a 0-60 time of under 8 seconds.

As can be seen from the "Cold Start" video, the car starts easily and quickly settles down to a steady idle. Oil pressure and temperatures seem good and emissions appear clear. Take a look at the image gallery to see a very tidy engine bay up close.

Suspension and Brakes

As well as being famous for going fast and handling impeccably Porsche's stopping ability is also legendary. The 924S braking system includes vented discs front and rear giving complete driver confidence. Likewise the coil spring suspension is engineered to match the cars performance.

Harvey confirms that brakes and suspension work exactly as they should, watch the video to hear him talk about the set-up and see the car in action.

The Drive

Nothing drives quite like a Porsche - this car pulls well, feels sure footed and responsive. Harvey feels the drive is one of the best aspects of ownership; "The engine is really smooth and pulls nicely through the rev range to the red line".

Electrics and Other

The window switches and mirror up down control ball are a little “sticky” in that they don’t always work until pressed or manoeuvred a few times but do operate fine then. Harvey suspects that need spraying and cleaning with contact cleaner due to lack of use.

The Sony in-car stereo turns on but doesn’t operate. This was not investigated in Harvey's ownership as he doesn't have any need to listen to it with the soundtrack provider by the car.

The siren on the Meta alarm is currently disconnected as it used to go off deafening Harvey in the garage. It’s just 2 push on connectors under the bonnet at the bulkhead.

Otherwise all the electrics work as Porsche intended.

History and Paperwork

The best kept secret of the classic Porsche line up, the 924S offers fantastic fun and represents excellent value.

Stunning appearance, great condition and true Porsche handling and performance. This is an opportunity to own an iconic sports car that will really turn heads. Drive it to shows or simply enjoy the open road. It's unlikely the 924S will remain this affordable for long.

With it's original service manual and numerous receipts for works this is a car that has been well looked after. A stainless steel exhaust system and an after market Meta alarm has been fitted.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition.
Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Hi – is there a missing air intake grill, the 4th on the right?

Hello,

Apologies if any of my questions have already been answered by the pics or vids:

1. The sunroof appears ajar in all of the pics – I assume it closes firmly and tightly? Unfortunately my garage space is under construction so may need to leave this outside for a temporary period in the event I win the auction 🙂

2. No 924 is complete without a cracked dashboard – assume that the pic of the cracked dashboard in the middle is the only crack – i.e. there are no other cracks visible elsewhere on the dashboard interior?

3. Apart from the sticky mirror / window switches all other electrics work ok (lights/rear window heater etc)?

Nice car – thanks!

Hello. Like the car, how long have the decals been on? Would like to know if they can be removed easily if desired without damaging the underlying paintwork?

Hi there, do you have photos of the rust work repair that should of been carried out due to previous MOT’S in 2018? Or photos of the sills and jacking points from underneath and the outer sills without the side skirts fitted? Thank you
