Introduction

Dom Ginn
Professional Consigner

A timeless appeal in a stylish and practical package, the Alfa Romeo Spider is always a classy choice.

The Alfa Romeo Spider first made its appearance in 1966, but thanks to a combination of its twin-cam engines, five-speed gearboxes and that distinctive styling, it retained a steady demand. Alfa kept the car in production as its sole open-top sports car for three decades, until production finally ceased in 1993. With the exception of equipment and several facelifts, development was fairly minimal but it retained much of its driving experience characteristic of the original. A few more changes over the coming years kept the Alfa up to date with the current car trends until 1982, when another redesign of the Spider was introduced. In addition, the car had some cosmetic upgrades to the bumpers and the addition of a boot spoiler.

This car comes to market from just under a years ownership. It is believed to have originally been in Norway, and then came to the UK and was converted to right hand drive by marque experts Bell and Colvill. In the current ownership the brakes have been refreshed with new flexi-pipes, and the steering wheel has also been switched out, the original also coming with the sale. The Alfa comes with a current MOT, valid until April 2026.

This listing was written from information supplied by Dom after meeting David the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

The car has a distinct airplane look about it which appealed to my early career, working with a plane manufacturer.

David has taken on a variety of vehicles over the years, with classic's being his favourite ones he owned and driven, "My wife and I have spent around 45 years owning and working on 17 classic cars over our motoring history. We've loved our time with Alfa's. We had the pleasure of driving our Spider Veloce S2 on a previous trip all the way to Milan, to celebrate 100 years of Alfa Romeo".

David let us know more about his more recent time with the S3, "We hoped to do something similar this year with a drive out abroad, but now aged 75 and 85, and with my Parkinson’s progressing faster than we had hoped, we've had to step away from the hobby we love. Determined to enjoy one more classic, we bought the Alfa last year. Sadly, due to my declining health, we’ve had little opportunity to use it."

As detailed above, due to his illness, David will be relinquishing his driving license and so the car comes to sale sooner than hopes. Should you have any questions about the car, David would be happy to answer these in the comments section below.

Exterior

With classic styling, the Alfa oozes Italian flair, with lines and curves in all the right places, making it a true thing of beauty.

Wheels and Tyres

The original "Pepper Pot" alloy wheels are fitted and present well. All appeared to be in good condition, we didn’t notice any major damage, just the occasional mark here and there that come with age.

The front of the Spider is fitted with RXMotion Road X tyres. To the rear, the car has a set of GoodYear Eagle NCT 5's. Both front and rear show with a spec of 15/195/60. Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior of the Alfa and a closer look at the wheels and tyres.

image

Bodywork

The bodywork of the Alfa showed well across all the panels. Both doors, bonnet and boot open and close without concern with the panels gaps all looking to line up well. There were a couple of minor car park related dings to both doors and a small nick to the rear quarter panel, although nothing major. The sills looked good on this car, the only areas we noticed some corrosion were small early signs on the offside bulk head, and same position on the rear wing.

We've highlighted our observations in more detail through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take the time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

image

Paint

Finished in a lovely shade of blue, the coverage showed well across the panels looking over the exterior. To take the car to the next level, a mop and polish would help to remove swirl marks that have typically developed with age.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there yourself. Please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car to form your own opinion about the condition of the paint.

image

Glass and Trim

The windscreen, side windows, and lenses all appear in great condition and we could see no sign of scratching or chips on the glass. The rear perspex window on the convertible roof showed without concern. The seals look good around the car and in line with the rest of the condition.

The exterior trim also presents well but just aged as you might expect, both the rubber and chrome. Badges and emblems were intact but again showing a little age. Take a look through the exterior gallery and review the video. We take you across all areas of the car as if you were standing there yourself, so you can see in greater detail how the car is presented.

image

Interior

Simple, stylish, and driver-focused, blending vintage character with just enough comfort to make every drive an occasion - a lovely place to be out on the road.

Seats and Carpets

The seats showed very nicely indeed, finished in a smart tan colour. We found no concerns here, the leather looking to have been re-trimmed in the recent past including the door cards. Looking over the rear storage bench seating showed in great condition, and we noted no issues here.

The main cabin carpets show in lovely condition. Underneath the cabin carpets on the main flooring showed no major issues, just a few signs of age to the main flooring. In the boot section, the carpets showed well, matching the rest of the interior. We've captured high-resolution photos and a full interior video tour through the car. This covers off the angles inside the car for you to review and appreciate the condition of what's on offer here in our interior review section.

image

Dashboard

The black dash and centre console all appears in great condition. The instrument binnacle looked good and features 2 main dials with 4 sub dials, all sections were functioning as expected. The odometer was set in Kilometres, and showed with ~111,049 KM's at the time of our visit.

The rest of the switches and controls all appear to be in nice condition, with surfaces free from fogging. We noted no issues with any warning lights and the speedometer and rev counter were all functioning without concern when starting up and driving the car.

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The leather wrapped Moto-Lita 3-spoke steering wheel shows well, overall no concerns were noted here. The Alfa badging showed nicely in the centre section. The Spider is also complete with its more classic, wooden-rimmed steering wheel.

The manual gear selector features beige inlays to the gaiter surround, this also looks to reflect the same condition as the other cabin areas. A very smart place to take in the journey ahead.

image

Mechanics

Powered by a lively 2.0L twin-cam engine, its eager performance and unmistakable sound is at the heart of the Spider’s engaging driving experience.

Engine and Gearbox

Starting up from cold, the engine turned over on the second turn of the key. We weren't able to take the Alfa out on the road, due to Davids health condition. Moving the car around the driveway, showed no issues and the operated well without showing us any concerns, and the car has a recent MOT too.

Take a look at the mechanical video to see the car starting up and more detail in the engine bay.

image

Suspension and Brakes

Looking over the underside of the car during our visit, showed without obvious concern, the car likely having been restored at some point in its life.

David let us know that previous restoration works had been completed on the brakes, "Avanti have changed all the fluids and flexible brake pipes were installed, I found the results very much improved the braking". Please take a look over the mechanical videos and photographs to see close-up images from under the car.

image

The Drive

David lets us know more about his previous driving experience with the car, "It is a real treat to feel all the curves and respond to the road when you're out driving in the Alfa, the Spider handles all of this perfectly."

image

Electrics and Other

During our time with the vehicle we noted that all switches, dials, and gauges appear undamaged and are in great condition. The Alfa is complete with a spare wheel and for a more classic look to the cabin area, a wooden-rimmed steering wheel.

David told us everything was in working order, as far as he was aware.

History and Paperwork

This car comes to market from under a years ownership, and a forced sale due to illness, it has still had work actioned in that time including a brake system refresh and comes with a fresh MOT.

The current owner David, originally purchased the car with the intention of recreating some previous driving holidays.

The car comes with MOT certificates all the way back to 1992.

Please note, for the mileage listed in the 'Service history' section, this is noted as a mixture of 'Kilometre's' and 'Mile's, due to the way the history has been noted on the registered MOT results.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

    Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price a seller is willing to accept for their vehicle. We work closely with sellers to set realistic reserves that reflect current market values — we don’t take on vehicles with inflated or unrealistic expectations.

If the reserve isn’t met when the auction ends, we’ll work with the highest bidder to try and agree a deal with the seller.

Whether the reserve has been met may / may not be disclosed during the auction — just like a traditional auction house. Bidders usually find out if they’ve won only when the auction ends.

    As a guide:
    – If you’re able to place a second bid, the reserve hasn’t been met.
    – If you attempt to outbid yourself and the system blocks it, then the reserve has been met.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.
