Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Photographer and Editor

The Spider’s charisma comes from the original, like a fine wine, age enhances its appeal!

Introduced during an era of automotive elegance, the Alfa Romeo Spider perfectly encompassed the emotive exuberance of a bygone era of style, emotion and freedom. Designed and assembled by Pininfarina, the 105 Series open-top Spider was an advanced car of its time, adding an aesthetic focal point to a range full of talented driver's cars. First seen in 1966, the Spider went on to become a fixture in the Alfa Romeo range for an impressive three decades. Each series saw incremental updates to the power and visuals, but the feel and sheer driving pleasure remained undiluted. For a period in the late 80s, the Spider was one of the few mainstream open-top roadsters available, enabling a steady trickle for demand. Despite its age, what kept the Alfa in the hearts of everyone who drove it was its immense character, and even when mainstream manufacturers resurrected the open-top market in the 90s, most of the new designs lacked the Alfa's distinctive charisma.

The galvanised Series Four carried over the same underpinnings as the previous model, losing the ungainly rubber boot spoiler and sill extensions. Perfectly suited to modern driving conditions, thanks to the creature comforts such as a sensible dashboard, electric windows, power steering and its smooth-running fuel injection engine, the hood is remarkably easy to operate and of course, you have the huge advantage of a factory-sanctioned RHD conversion.

This smartly presented 1992 Series 4 model is finished in "Broom Yellow" with a black leather interior. Featuring much of its original fittings, it has been featured several times as a magazine feature car and comes to market soon off the back of an 18-year ownership. It has an impressive number of invoices dating back to 2007 and comes with its owner's booklet, workshop manual and two keys. It was last serviced around ~150 miles ago and sold with an MOT to November 2025.

This listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Abbas the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I saw the car at show, and instantly made the owner an offer!

A collector of Italian sports cars, Abbas came across this example at a classic car show and felt it needed to join his collection. Making an offer there and then, he soon discovered that the car was well-known in the classic car press, and was a featured cover car in at least 3 articles.

The previous owner used the car as an occasional car, keeping it well maintained over his 18-year ownership, regularly taking it to specialists for servicing. Abbas is selling the car due to a loss of storage and he will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

1990's convenience and quality meets 1960s design purity.

Wheels and Tyres

The 15” Zender star pattern alloys are in excellent condition, all but one have Alfa Romeo motif dust caps.

The nearside tyres are by Triangle and date from 2023. On the other side, there are 2024 Everton Orrix and Leao tyres. All show plenty of even tread.

image

Bodywork

The exterior presentation is positive. The panels are flush with the body and the doors open and close with ease. We didn’t see any significant panel damage aside from a minor and treatable dent on the boot lid. There is a build-up of corrosion on the rear light panel and minor under-paint blemishes on the nearside rear arch and passenger door. The rear wheel arch lips show emerging corrosion.

The underside of the car looks solid, with minor signs of age seen in places. The suspension mounts, engine bay and wheel wells are in good shape. The boot wheel well has been recently renovated. We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

image

Paint

The "Broom Yellow" paint has a decent lustre and is free of swirls. The colour finish is generally consistent, although the nearside front wing looks a shade slightly lighter in a certain light. There are a handful of minor touch-ups, a few light marks and small chips across the body. The windscreen scuttle panel has notable paint flaws.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

image

Glass and Trim

The windscreen is in good condition and just shows lamination damage, the seals are in good order. The headlamps are good but both of the rear lamp lenses have mild fractures as pictured.

The trim is all neatly mounted and in good condition. Abbas has a spare boot badge to replace the mildly worn one. The bumpers are flush to the body, both show a few scuffs and surface paint cracks but the items themselves appear to be decent.

image

Interior

Retaining much of its originality, the cabin has been well cared for.

Seats and Carpets

The contoured leather and fabric seats are smartly presented with very little wear.

The carpets are well above the expectations of a car of its age and all are damp-free. The boot trim condition suggests sympathetic use.

image

Dashboard

The dashboard has lasted well, with no significant fractures or wear noted on the padding or facia. The dials, controls and switches look good and all are reported to function as they should.

The headlining, door cards and interior trim are all clean and in good shape.

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The 3-spoke flat-faced Nardi wooden steering rim is in great shape, with a little patina noted on the metal arms.

The gear stick has fractures on the veneer as pictured, but otherwise is in good condition.

image

Mechanics

The punchy and smooth twin-cam has to be considered one the greatest four-cylinders ever produced.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine was warm when we conducted the start video after travelling to the shooting location, but Abbas tells us it has no issues with starting when cold. The engine idled smoothly with no unwanted noises, with no exhaust fumes or warning lights flagged on the dashboard. The engine's presentation is positive, with a couple of components showing signs of age. The engine was last serviced in November 2024.

The gearbox is slick and engages gears with no reported problems, Abbas demonstrated that the clutch has a good biting point and operates well.

image

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension has been upgraded with a Harvey and Bailey handling kit. It deals with road conditions with no negative feel, free of thuds or wobbles.

The car's servo-assisted all-disc braking system works well, with no squeals or judders. It slows down in a straight line, free of pulling.

image

The Drive

With the tone of the 4-branch manifold and stainless steel exhaust, the car has a laid-back driving style and a surprisingly comfortable and controlled ride. The precise 5-speed gear change and well-weighted steering are the template for the ideal driving experience, which combined with the twin-cam high-pitched rasp is deeply reminiscent of driving a Ferrari.

Happy to cruise at all speeds, the ride is composed thanks to the fact it was designed as an open-top car from its conception. As a result, there are remarkably few creaks or shakes. The only noises we heard during the low-speed test drive were the minor trim noise, with no unwanted noises heard from the suspension or brakes.

image

Electrics and Other

The hood is in smart condition with no signs of significant wear or outdoor elements. The perspex screen shows minor signs of age but retains a good opacity. The soft top raises and lowers without any issues and offers a tight seal when fixed. The car is fitted with a wind deflector.

The electric windows operate smoothly and it has been fitted with DAB USB head unit. It will be sold with a breathable car cover and half cover. There is a box of new and used spares also included.

History and Paperwork

It comes with an impressive number of invoices, outlining sympathetic mechanical upkeep, and was previously in ~18 year ownership.

First registered in September 1992, it was converted to RHD by Bell & Colvill on behalf of Alfa Romeo and has seen four owners since new. It comes with a large file of provenance, which includes maintenance, servicing, parts and sales invoices back to 2007. The previous keeper has created an inventory of the work carried out on the car over his ~18 years of ownership, which is backed up by the relevant invoices. It also has MOT certificates back to 2005. About £1,000 has been spent in the last two years which includes new tyres, a service and minor electrical work. Older invoices document a brake overhaul, clutch assembly, starter motor, heater matrix, steering work and engine control valves and sensors.

The car has been featured in several classic car magazines since 2010, appearing on their respective covers. It comes with its owners handbook and workshop manual and has two keys. It has an MOT to November 2025 and was last serviced in November 2024.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment of the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

    Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price a seller is willing to accept for their vehicle. We work closely with sellers to set realistic reserves that reflect current market values — we don’t take on vehicles with inflated or unrealistic expectations.

If the reserve isn’t met when the auction ends, we’ll work with the highest bidder to try and agree a deal with the seller.

Whether the reserve has been met may / may not be disclosed during the auction — just like a traditional auction house. Bidders usually find out if they’ve won only when the auction ends.

    As a guide:
    – If you’re able to place a second bid, the reserve hasn’t been met.
    – If you attempt to outbid yourself and the system blocks it, then the reserve has been met.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.
