Introduction

Jacob Boodrie
Professional Consigner

The last of the old-school Aston Martins – the Vanquish S is, quite simply, exhilarating.

For Aston Martin to survive in the 21st century, it needed to keep up with the competition. Aston required something completely new – and the code name was Project Vantage. The first car was branded the V12 Vanquish when it arrived in 2001. The chassis was based on technology developed by Lotus, paired with a body designed by Ian Callum that was universally admired. The V12 Vanquish was soon reworked and, in 2005, replaced by an upgraded version - the Vanquish S.

The Vanquish S featured a quicker steering rack, improved brakes, and a heavily revised suspension setup. A slightly more aggressive front splitter and a larger rear spoiler enhanced the aerodynamics. Power also increased from approximately 460BHP to a whopping 520BHP.

This lovely example has been owned by the current custodians for the past ~7 years and has been well maintained since leaving the Aston Martin factory in 2005, it comes with a current MOT valid until 25.07.2025, and last serviced 10.10.2024.

This listing was written from information supplied by Jacob after meeting Barry the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

A glorious tribute to Aston Martin’s past, I’ve always fancied owning a Vanquish S.

Barry and Maria purchased this stunning Aston Martin Vanquish S to enjoy during retirement and have done so for the past ~7 years. They’ve taken the car down to Spain and across the UK, enjoying it as a proper grand tourer.

They both mentioned how wonderful it feels to drive on a sunny day – offering a luxurious yet thrilling experience. However, due to difficulty getting in and out of the car now, Barry has decided it’s time to let the Vanquish S go and find a new owner who will appreciate it as much as they have. He has kept the car well maintained and stored it in a dry garage when not in use. Barry and Maria will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

An Ian Callum designed Aston Martin that fuses classic and modern styling in an incredible way.

Wheels and Tyres

The 11-spoke 19” wheels, finished in silver, look great on this car. During our visit, the wheels appeared well cared for, with no obvious damage to any of the spokes or centres. The nearside front and rear wheels have been repaired and refinished in September last year.

The wheels are fitted with Yokohama AB Sport tyres dated 2014, which also appear to be in good condition. They have a healthy amount of tread remaining, with no visible cracking or signs of ageing on the sidewalls.

Bodywork

The bodywork of this Vanquish S appears to be in great condition, with all panel gaps around the car aligning very well. During our visit, we didn’t notice any obvious large dings or dents on the bodywork.

We’ve provided more detailed observations through our high-resolution images and videos. Please take the time to review all the media files for a comprehensive view of what’s on offer and to assess the car’s condition for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in a beautiful deep navy blue, the paintwork shows even coverage and consistent colour across each panel. While we did notice the occasional very minor stone chip at the front of the car, you’ll need to look quite closely to spot them. Additionally, we observed some minor wear; a small smudge on the front bonnet, a scuff to the rear bumper, faint swirl marks on the roof, and a more noticeable scrape to the rear nearside bumper which Barry has mentioned will be addressed before the end of the auction.

Once again, we’ve captured high-resolution images and videos of the car to help you evaluate the condition of the bodywork for yourselves.

Glass and Trim

The glass on this Vanquish S also presents very well and is consistent with the car’s mileage. During our visit, we didn’t observe any chips, cracks, or discolouration. The window seals are also in good condition and match the overall well-kept appearance of the vehicle.

The bumpers, door handles, and window surrounds are all in great condition as well. We did notice a little area of flaking paint on the front window wiper arm.

Interior

The more sporty Recaro seats hold you firmly in place as you manoeuvre this powerful car.

Seats and Carpets

The sand coloured leather Recaro seats, subtly embossed with Aston Martin "wings", have held their shape remarkably well over the years — as you’d expect from a car that has been cherished and carefully maintained. Just some creases to the leather in a few areas as pictured.

A similar story can be told of the door cards and navy carpets, which also present in great condition. For a detailed view of the cabin, please refer to the extensive media provided.

Dashboard

The dashboard is finished in dark navy leather and features three classic styled dials positioned in front of the driver.

The dashboard in this Vanquish S shows no signs of major damage or scuffing, and no warning lights were displayed during our visit. The odometer showed a reading of ~41,743 miles at that time.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A leather wrapped Aston Martin steering wheel with steel trim is fitted. It is in great condition, aligning with the mileage of this car, and the silver paddles for gear shifts look good too, with just a bit of wear to the leather inserts. For a closer look, check out the image gallery to see the detail.

Mechanics

With twelve cylinders powering the car, the engine sounds like music to the ears when you press the start button.

Engine and Gearbox

The uprated V12 engine in the S is regarded as a very powerful unit, producing approximately 520BHP. On the day of our visit, we started the car from cold, and it performed well on the road — the engine pulled strongly, idled smoothly, and ran without fault.

Barry reports that the car starts from cold without any issues and drives well, with its smooth six-speed automatic gearbox powering the rear wheels. Take a look at the mechanical video to see the car starting from cold, being driven, and for a closer look underneath the Vanquish S and into the engine bay.

Suspension and Brakes

Another notable upgrade on the Vanquish S is the suspension. It appears to be in good condition and delivered a comfortable ride along the sweeping roads around Exeter.

During our short test drive, the car felt just as you’d expect from a grand tourer of this era, and it came to a stop smoothly and without issue.

The Drive

Driving this Aston Martin Vanquish S delivers a truly exhilarating and enjoyable experience. Barry and Maria have thoroughly enjoyed taking the car on sunny weekend drives around their local area, as well as longer road trips to destinations such as Spain.

The Vanquish S started up on the first attempt without any issues. Out on the road with Maria behind the wheel, the car felt responsive and well-planted, offering more than enough power for confident driving. No unusual noises were noted from the engine or suspension during the drive.

Electrics and Other

While we didn’t test all of the electrical components during our visit, Barry reports that, to his knowledge, everything is functioning correctly and in line with the car’s well-maintained condition.

We did observe one minor issue: each time the door is opened, the electric window automatically drops as expected, but it does not return to its closed position once the door is shut.

History and Paperwork

Coming to market from ~7 year ownership, 5 former keepers, and having covered only around ~41,700 miles since new, this example has been well maintained throughout its life with 21 services, the last in October 2024.

The car is coming out of a ~7 year ownership with Barry and Maria. The car is highly original and has the benefit of being an 'S' spec model with the upgrades from the standard Vanquish. Take a look at this history and paperwork media to see the previous MOT reports, servicing and parts this Vanquish S has received over its life. The Aston Martin comes with a current MOT valid until 25.07.2025.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Hi Colin,
Undestood the rear bumper and the window haven’t been fixed yet; does Barry confirm it will be fixed in case of a successful sale?
Thanks

Hi Cid,

Barry asked me to pass on his reply:

“I will guarantee to the buyer to fix the rear bumper scratch and ensure window set to work efficiently in the event of a successful sale.

Thanks

Barry”

Thanks Colin, Barry.
On the exterior portfolio, pics 89-92, there are white marks on the front lower spoiler; do you have a zoom in photo to understand what this is? Do you know what this is?
Thanks

Good morning. These cars typically need a new clutch between 30k – 40k miles, considering this costs £8k – £10k I wondered if this has been done recently?

Hi,

I just spoke to Barry, he said he’s unsure if the clutch has been replaced but in his time with the car he hasn’t had any issues with the clutch.

Thanks,
Colin.

Thanks Colin, based on advice I’ve had from a renowned Aston specialist it will probably need replacing then at this mileage. Definitely, never replaced earlier from previous owners invoices?

I’ve had a look through the invoices but can’t see any mention of the clutch being replaced.

Thanks,

Hi Barry,
Have front subframe been replaced in its life?
Has the ASM hydraulic gearbox unit been fixed ever, as this is common unit failure?
Asking as both can be costly and known issues.
Cheers,
Cid

Hi Cid,

I spoke to Barry and he told me he wasn’t sure if the subframe has been replaced, or if the ASM has been fixed.

Thanks,

Thanks – looking at the rust on pic 68, it looks like it is the original front subframe.

Colin – with Barry away do you have any more photos of this area (pic 68 mechanics) showing the corrosion? As Cid mentions, this is a £10k replacement job if can’t be repaired in situ.
Thanks

Hi Rob,

That is all the photos we have, we do have the review of the underside of the car in the ‘On The Road’ video though, it starts around 6:30 in that video.

Hope this helps.

Thanks,
Colin.

I think the drivers side still doesn’t come up but it does look like this is a repeating fault so I wonder what was tried to rectify the first issue as that doesn’t seem to have worked as failed again?

Any update on rear bumper repair too?

Thanks

Hi Matt,

Barry is currently abroad and has limited communications, he has asked me to pass on his comment.

He told us the window drop should just be a case of coding it in to sort it.

Thanks,
Colin.
