Introduction

Colin Bashford
Pofessional Consigner

Audi's rally legend the Quattro, arguably doesn't need any introduction!

When the rules for rallying were changed to allow the use of 4-wheel drive cars, Audi were the first manufacturer to enter a 4WD car, the Quattro subsequently became the leader of the pack. First introduced in 1980 with a 2.1L I5 engine producing ~197bhp, propelling the Quattro to 60mph in ~7.1 seconds. In total only ~11,452 Quattros were produced.

This particular car is a 10-valve MB model, one of only 462 in 1989. It is coming to market after ~22 years ownership in which time it has been treated to a top-end engine rebuild carried out by G&A Autos, and some tasteful modifications like the interior from the later 20-valve car. It has an MOT that runs in to next year meaning it is ready to go, and is sold with some spares too for a new owner to further improve the car over time.

This listing was written from information supplied by Colin after meeting Mick the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Having owned the Quattro for ~22 years, I've loved taking the car to events and drives with the Audi club.

Mick told us he gets so much attention when out in the Quattro, with such a rare car everyone gives you thumbs up when you drive past. The car originally came with a full cloth interior, however Mick has added the interior from an newer 20-valve model, with the half leather bucket seats.

Mick will be sad to see the Quattro go but he just isn't driving it as much as he'd like to, he would like it to go to another enthusiast. He had the engine rebuilt ~6 years ago, and has covered some ~2,000 miles since then. He will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Squat and boxy with iconic flares arches, the Quattro has huge presence on the road, and always attracts positive attention.

Wheels and Tyres

The original multi-spoke wheels were present on the car and they look in good condition, however most of them do show some curb marks that have been picked up over time.

The Dunlop SP Sport 9000 tyres all looked in great condition with plenty of life left in them. Please have a look at the photos and video below to assess the condition of the wheels and tyres for yourself.

Bodywork

The bodywork of the Quattro looked in good condition in the main, with shut-lines and panel gaps looking good. We did notice a couple of areas where corrosion is coming through; just under the offside side rear window, the bottom of both front wings. Mick has mentioned that the car will be sold with two front wings as spares for the car that he purchased on eBay from another owner.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The "Tornado Red" paint looked to be in good condition in the main, we didn't notice any swirl marks on the paint around the car. Both front wings did look like they have had some paint work, Mick believes the front-end has been painted prior to his ownership, the sunroof has also been painted at some point. We noticed a small amount of extra paint at the bottom of the offside front wing, and the car inevitably has some small age related marks across it. In addition to this, where the car has likely been painted in the past, there are some small areas where the paint has cracked over time, noted on some areas by the trim such as the bottom of the rear offside window and bottom nearside front windscreen.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

Glass around the car looked in great condition, Mick pointed out a very small stone chip on the windscreen though.

Trim around the car looked in ok shape too, some of the pinstripe stickers were looking a bit tired though. Mick painted the grilles on the rear wings black to break up the red. Please view the photos and video below to review the condition of the glass and trim for yourself.

Interior

A driver focused cabin with a proper sports seat for the driver, buckle up and get ready for the ride!

Seats and Carpets

Mick has fitted the seats from the later 20-valve Quattro, with half leather, and a proper bucket seat from a SWB Quattro Sport. The seats looked in ok condition, but there is visible wear on the bolsters that has come with age, with a fair bit of cracking and scratches in the leather of the drivers seat. The bottom of the seat also showed some wear too as pictured.

The carpets looked in decent condition, we didn't notice any major stains in any of the carpets, just age related wear. Please take a look at the photos and video below to decide on the condition of the seats and carpets for yourself.

Dashboard

The digital dash was working as expected, with speed, revs, temperature and clock all showing. In the MB, the digital dash changed from green LED to orange as pictured, along with some changes to the information available. Much like the exterior, the dash is a boxy affair. A fire extinguisher was also present in the driver's footwell.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

An aftermarket Isotta steering wheel is fitted in the car and looked in good condition too. Mick still had the original steering wheel, which was in the boot, opting to change it for his own use finding the original steering wheel too large for the car.

The 5-speed stick was looking a little tired, again just in line with age and mileage, with wear noticed around the top of the stick. Please take a look at the photos and video below to check the condition of the steering wheel and gear stick for yourself.

Mechanics

The 2.2L 5 cylinder turbocharged engine has a distinct noise to it, to go along with that ~197BHP.

Engine and Gearbox

Starting up first time, after disarming the alarm, the engine ran well. On the road with Mick it didn't miss a beat, with its throaty sound a distinct feature of the model. As mentioned, this car has had a top-end engine rebuilt some ~2,000 miles ago in the current ownership, and so pulls strongly.

Gears were going in with out issue, Mick told us it does have a long throw, and makes you feel like you're part of the experience.

Mick told us the turbo has a more powerful overboost spring fitted to allow the engine to rev past 3000rpm. He has included the original spring in the sale. Please take a look at the cold start video below to see for yourself the performance of the engine and gearbox.

Suspension and Brakes

On our drive with Mick the suspension felt supple on the road, we didn't notice any crashing or unusual noises coming from the suspension even on some rough roads.

We didn't test the brakes to their full potential but they felt good, bringing the car to a stop without pulling, the MB coming with a major revision to the UR to improve the stopping performance. Mick told us there is sometimes a slight judder from the front brakes under heavy braking, he thinks this is due to under use, as the car has not covered many miles since the brakes were replaced. Please take a look at the on the road video below to see how the suspension and brakes performed.

The Drive

On our drive the car felt great, plenty of power from the engine with gear slotting in without any issues, the ride felt comfortable even on the rutted roads. To see the Quattro in motion please take a look at the on the road video below.

Electrics and Other

We didn't test all the electrics in the car but anything we did try was working, including the dashboard, sunroof and windows. Mick did tell us the the air conditioning doesn't operate as it should do, as a heavy aftermarket unit was fitted when he bought the car, which was mounted ahead of the front wheels, which affected handling, Quattro Workshop removed the unit for him, he hasn't had a chance to remove the switch from he dashboard.

Mick also mentioned that he'd upgraded the headlamps for better performance at night, this upgrade was carried out by Scorpio Racing in Bedford with the headlamps being split, polished and resealed.

History and Paperwork

~22 years in current ownership, this Tornado Red Quattro has seen expenditure when needed as documented, had an engine top-end rebuild ~2,000 miles ago and is ready for a new owner to enjoy and improve.

In 2018 the Quattro had an engine top-end rebuild with new head, cambelt, water pump etc. Mick has kept the car or the road for most of his ownership with yearly MOT's in the history file. There is lots of history to show maintenance Mick has had actioned, including an underseal carried out on the car back in 2016, and work on the radiators and brakes and suspension etc over time. The fuel tank was removed and sealed inside by Elite Engineering in Northampton in 2016 however Mick doesn't have paperwork for it. It comes to market with two front wings as spares for the new owner to further improve the car.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
