Introduction

Kulraj Singh Salh
COO

Arguably the pick of the bunch, the lighter 4.2L V8 is said to give the R8 a more balanced drive, the open gated manual gearbox is an excellent pairing and the coupe with the contrasting side blades gives that supercar look.

Audi created a car that gave that supercar feel, sensibilities of the German manufacturer, and at a fraction of the cost. The 4.2L V8 is a dynamic engine that they've been developing for years, when you hear the 414BHP engine start up, you know you're in something special.

This example is coming to market after 3 and a half years ownership, a solid service history, and looks beautiful in "Jet Blue Metallic" with ivory interior. This car has also had the factory bulkhead welds reinforced, engine carbon clean actioned, and a large service including water pump actioned last year.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Kulraj after meeting Chris the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

This R8 really has been a joy to own, the only fault is that I have to put my golf clubs in the cabin with me!

Chris has owned this car for 3 and half years, previously having owned 911's in the past, this car hasn't disappointed in the slightest. Stored in a dry secure underground car park in central London, he's covered some ~14,000 miles in that time, trips to golf and used for commuting to work too.

In his ownership he has had the car serviced by an independent specialist, and had the typical chassis work and "de-coking" of the engine carried out by RE Performance in Swindon. With a house purchase on the cards that will likely mean no dry garage space for the R8, Chris will be moving to a more practical but still spritely VW R32 when the R8 sells. He'll be happy to answer any questions you have in the comments section below.

Exterior

Few cars go from concept design to production and look so similar, and in this colourway the R8 looks a delight.

Wheels and Tyres

Wearing 19" twin spoke alloys, they help to show off the drilled brake discs. All four tyres are wrapped in Michelin PS4's, the tyres look in great condition.

The wheels look in excellent condition too, we just noticed a small area of curbing on the rear offside wheel as pictured, along with some surface corrosion around the valve on the front offside.

Bodywork

The design of the R8 still looks fresh today, the cars design is so close to what was a radical concept car. The side blade and large air intakes provide a contrast to the vast panels on the car.

The shut lines and panel gaps look great on this car, it's been well cared for over the years. There are just a few small points to note on this example; a pin sized dent on the top of the rear offside wing (you'll struggle to see it in the video or photos), a small area of corrosion at the bottom of the drivers door and a small scuff to the bottom of front bumper on the nearside. These really are small areas to note, you'll see from the video footage of the underside that the under-trays etc are not scratched, Chris being a careful driver to avoid the car bottoming out etc.

Paint

These cars are iconic, but sometimes a particular colourway can just elevate a car further, we think that's the case with this car in "Jet Blue Metallic".

The paint is even in colour across all the panels, and has an excellent finish across the car too. Across the front of the car there are some stone chips as you'd expect, a couple on the leading edge of the bonnet etc. The only other point to note is a small mark on the nearside side blade.

Glass and Trim

All looks excellent on this example. The trim in the shape of the various vents and guards looks great owing to the cars garaged life. The glass all looks unmarked too. Watch the video review to see the detail.

Interior

A proper sports car cabin, deep bolstered leather seats, but all the focus is on that open gated shifter... don't forget to look ahead!

Seats and Carpets

Finished in ivory leather, the sports seats present in very good condition. They have the usual signs of ageing on the deep outer bolsters, but have retained their shape well and are free from any damage. The car has some quilted patterned over-mats installed to keep the carpets clean.

Dashboard

Crisp dials and a smart ergonomic centre console. This example presents in excellent condition, we love some of the little things like the needles springing around when you first start the car. Take a look at the video review to see the detail of the cabin.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The flat bottomed steering wheel and the open gated shifter set the tone for this supercar. Both present in very good condition, particularly the metallic gearstick which is not littered with scratches you often see on manual examples.

Mechanics

A better balanced chassis, 414BHP from the 4.2L V8 is more than enough to propel the car to 62MPH in 4.6 seconds.

Engine and Gearbox

Regularly serviced, this car has had a carbon clean actioned in Chris' ownership, you'll see the before and after pictures in the gallery. Last year the car had a major service with water pump replaced, and the car had its last regular service a few weeks ago.

Watch the video review to hear the car spring in to life from cold.

Suspension and Brakes

Riding on 19" wheels that came with the Magride (1BL) suspension system, Chris reports that the car rides as it should do, one of the shocks having been replaced in his ownership. The car just had a service and inspection a few weeks ago where all the shocks were checked and no issues reported.

The Drive

A perfect blend of power and excitement, the Quattro system on the R8 is set-up to deliver 70% to the rear, just the kind of balance you want to keep things interesting.

Electrics and Other

Optioned with electrically folding, dimming and heated mirrors, along with electric seats and parking sensors front and back.

Chris reports that everything is working to his knowledge and he tells us that he had a new battery fitted recently.

History and Paperwork

A sorted V8 R8 in a beautiful colour combination, all the important bits attended to and a fresh service, this car is ready to roll.

The car comes with a host of invoices and a stamped up service book charting its life. Just ~45,000 miles completed and 5 previous owners, the excellent condition in line with this too.

In Chris' ownership, over and above the regular servicing with specialists, he has had the chassis welds on the bulkhead strengthened by specialists RE Performance, as well has having the engine carbon cleaned. The car also had a major service last year where the water pump was replaced, this in addition to the regular service actioned a few weeks ago leave the car ready for a new owner to enjoy this summer.

We've actioned checks on; Seller ID, V5C, HPi.

Hello Chris.

Can I ask you a few questions please?

Is it on the original clutch?

Has the oil cooler been replaced or have you had any issues with it leaking?

Does the Aircon work?

Many thanks.

Hi – where did you have the car serviced recently? Does the sat nav work ok and does it have the 6 disc CD player? Thanks. Adam

Does the car have any current known faults or is it 100% running fine as far as you are aware.

Hi Chris,

Would you be so kind to answer a few questions.

Have you had any brake work done during your ownership or is there any evidence in the history of recent discs & pads?

Were any issues / recommendations picked up during the recent service that still need addressing?

Is there any evidence of clutch slippage when accelerating in high gears from low revs?

Thanks James

The report mentions some corrosion on driver door – how bad is it? How badly worn is the driver seat? Many thanks! Adam

Chris, I have bid, but sadly will not be able to view the car before the end of the auction. Can you advise if the car has had any body work, particularly on the drivers side? The front and read bumper ‘shut lines’ appear marginally larger than the passenger side. Could be due to the passenger front lip having been grounded. I can see the car would need a few bits of paintwork to make it perfect, like the bonnet nose, drivers rear quarter, either side of the lower rear light, and driver door corner. Is there anywhere else that… Read more »

Morning.

In your ownership you say you replaced a shock absorber.

Was this done as a preventative measure or had you experienced some problems? Was there no requirement or advise to replace the pair?

Thanks

Hi Chris

Do you mind if I ask why you chose to get the bulkhead welds strengthened, where there any cracks? Doing research on R8’s it seems that views are very mixed on whether this can be done properly without weakening the existing alloy. Looking at the good condition of the car (you’ve clearly loved it), be interested to know why you went this route.

Many thanks

Roger
