Introduction

Dom Ginn
Professional Consigner

Combining the best that BMW has to offer, the 635 CSi epitomises class, comfort, and power in what can only be described as the golden era of BMW design.

Introduced in 1978, the E24 Series BMW 635 CSi was very much the symbol of the BMW range. The iconic styling, quickly gaining the name ‘shark nose’ due to its prominent forward-facing nose, soon proved popular with critics and consumers alike. The iconic design isn’t the 635’s only attribute however, regarded as effortless long-distance cruisers and as fitting for a sports coupe, the 635 CSi also had a role in the world of motorsport, winning three European Touring Car Championships.

This 635 CSi has had four previous owners, comes to market from ~6 year ownership, and has strived to keep the car in good mechanical condition whilst keeping the car true to its original format with no modifications.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Dom after meeting Anthony the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I’ve always been a fan of the E9 Batmobile, the 635 CSi is such a contemporary version of it that I’d always wanted to own one.

Anthony purchased this car in 2016 after wanting to own one for a long time, attracted to the shark nose design he describes the look of the car as striking, and being famous with model driven by Bruce Willis and Cybil Shepherd in Moonlighting.

When speaking with Anthony about his time with the car he describes it as a delightful experience, having only carried out maintenance and repair that includes new fuel lines, suspension rubbers and joints, starter motor, battery, and tyres. Anthony also tells us that all shoes and belts were checked during a full inspection 2 service with Munich Legends - the world's leading BMW specialist. Sadly due to working overseas the car has spent much of its time SORN'd and garaged and since returning home and bringing back another car Anthony has come to the conclusion that the 635 must find a new home. He'll be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments below.

Exterior

One of the last sharknose models, the 635 CSi is a sought after car with iconic BMW styling in Zinnoberrot.

Wheels and Tyres

The original BBS style alloy wheels are an 80s staple and fit the car perfectly. They do require some attention as the paint has started to crack and flake, however this is nothing a refurbishment won’t fix, with the wheels appearing otherwise free from any major damage.

The wheels are wrapped in Altimax Sport tyres which are in great condition having been replaced by Anthony circa 2016, there is plenty of tread left and no obvious signs of ageing or deterioration to the sidewalls.

Bodywork

The bodywork itself looks to be in good condition, with no obvious dings or dents, all panels look to be in alignment with no obtuse panel gaps or wonky swage lines. There is some corrosion present on the car in line with the age and mileage, around the rear wheel arches and under the rear window as can be seen in both pictures and videos. In addition to this, the lower front splitter has likely scraped a curb with the underside marked.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The "Zinnoberrot" red paintwork is in similar condition to the bodywork, being in commendable condition on the whole, however there is some peeling on the front wings and heavy oxidation on the rear spoiler. Overall the paintwork has begun to fade which can be seen more so on the horizontal planes of the car, however this can be polished out before the problem worsens.

Again, we have taken high resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves. The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

Both the glass and surrounding trim look to be in fair condition, with no major chips to the windscreen, nor any cracks or scratches present on any of the other windows. The surrounding trim whilst old does not look to be immediately failing, however it could do with rejuvenating to really bring it back to life.

Interior

The soft leather seats and driver focused dash layout really gave the 635 CSi a futuristic look and feel for the time.

Seats and Carpets

The full leather upholstery is in great condition for the most part, with no visible rips, tears, or other invasive damage to any of the hide. The only notable point of wear is the cracking of the drivers side bolster which could do with refinishing to bring it up to the standard of the rest of the upholstery.

The carpets are also in good condition, with no visible damage or sun bleaching present whatsoever, likewise the boot carpet looks untouched with the exception of the outline of the spare wheel worn into the carpet over time.

Dashboard

The layout of the dashboard is all very angled toward the driver, really giving the interior a cockpit look and feel. The dashboard itself is in lovely condition, with no visible damage or excessive wear to be found on the dashtop, and no major damage to any of the buttons or switch gear.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is a wide set skinny wheel synonymous with the BMW’s of this era, a long way from the thick and padded steering wheels of today's BMW. The steering wheel itself is free of any wear or damage, in keeping with the rest of the interior. Likewise the gear selector is also free of any major wear, as to be expected with the automatic transmission requiring very little use of the gearstick.

Mechanics

The straight-six M30 engine delivers ~215BHP and with regular servicing and general maintenance this particular example fires up nicely.

Engine and Gearbox

The straight six M30 engine was a higher compression model than previous iterations, introducing 25 more horsepower than its predecessor. The engine in Anthony’s 635 appears to have been well cared for, starting without issue during our cold start video and performing effortlessly during our ‘On The Road’ video as can be seen. The last major bit of work the car had was back in ~2017, a level 2 service by marque specialists Munich Legends.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension has been refreshed in the current ownership, with all new bushings and joints, giving this 35 year old tourer a new lease of life and a very comfortable ride.

The brakes were done at the same time as the suspension and such work without issue, stopping efficiently and with plenty of bite.

The Drive

The 635 CSi is a car designed with class, comfort, and elegance in mind. Be it a daily commute, or an epic journey across europe, BMW designed the E24 6 series to provide the same level of comfort and performance under all circumstances and this all round drivability is where the 635 CSi really comes into a class of its own.

Electrics and Other

The electrical systems on the 635 all work as expected, including the powered sunroof which opens and closes without issue, as well as the radio, lights, aircon, and windows.

History and Paperwork

With a good history, refreshed suspension and brakes from a marque specialist, and coming from a six year stint with current owner, this car presents as a great value entry in to BMW E24 635 CSi ownership.

With only four previous owners in its 35 years on the road, Anthony has been lucky enough to enjoy this 635 CSi for 6 years, and hopes someone else can find the same level of enjoyment as he has over the years. During Anthony’s time with the car he has seen to it that maintenance has been carried out as required, including the suspension and brake refresh with Munich Legends, along with general maintenance, tyres, and servicing over the years too.

Whilst the original service history is incomplete, there is good indication that the car was serviced regularly at the start of its life and there is plenty of paperwork and invoices to go with the car for various parts and maintenance over the years, including the works current owner Anthony has had carried out.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in high resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
