Introduction

Colin Bashford
Professional Consigner

The BMW 3 Series; the yard stick demonstrating how to create a sporty, practical and stylish convertible.

The E30 is the second generation of the 3 Series we all know and love. Released in 1982 in its four-door saloon layout, it wasn't until 1985 when the convertible was introduced, giving the E30 a sleeker look with only two doors.

The E30 came with a variety of engines over its years, this specific car is a 325i, fitted with the 2.5L M20 straight-six, which produced ~168bhp and 151lb/ft of torque.

This car comes to market after ~2 years and 8 months ownership with Dylan, with an MOT valid until 06.09.2024. The 325i does have some room for improvement.

This listing was written from information supplied by Colin after meeting Dylan the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

The 2.5L straight-six makes a lovely noise with the roof down.

Dylan's family have owned the 325i for ~2 years and 5 months, with a friend owning the car previous to this.

Dylan's brother used to enjoy the car and passed it on to Dylan who also loves the car, but unfortunately has not been able to get insured on it, so has decided to sell it with us.

Dylan will be happy to answer any questions in the comments section below.

Exterior

Alpine White paint suits the E30 shape well, with those four iconic headlights up front.

Wheels and Tyres

The standard multi-spoke wheels were present on the 325i - they all looked in usable condition. We did notice some kerb marks on all of the wheels and some discolouring between the spoke - nothing major though.

A mixture of tyres were found on the car, Michelin at the front and Continental at the rear, all tyres looked to have a decent amount of tread left, however, the fronts were both showing some signs of cracking in the sidewall, the nearside one more so than the offside one.

Please have a look at the photos and video below to asses the condition of the wheels and tyres for yourself.

Bodywork

The bodywork around the car looked in great condition, shut lines were neat, both doors, boot and bonnet all opened and closed well. We didn't notice any major dents or scuffs around the body. We did notice some slight corrosion around the lower sections of the bodywork, notable behind the front offside wheel arch and the rear nearside wheel arch where some paint had chipped away.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The Alpine White paint looked in good condition, it had a nice shine to it with an even coverage. We did notice some swirl marks when in direct sunlight but nothing of great concern and the car would benefit from a machine polish.

As mentioned above there were some areas where corrosion was visible, coming through the paint.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass around the car looked in good condition, with no noticeable chips or cracks in the windscreen or other glass around the car. The rear plastic window in the soft top did look quite scratched. The window did have some condensation on the inside, most likely due to the cold day we had in Glasgow.

Chrome trim was looking in okay shape, we did notice some pitting in the window surrounds and the rear bumper chrome had some spots of corrosion on the top section and larger areas on the bottom side. Some other trim around the car was looking a bit tired, the black plastic part of the front bumper had some areas where it looked like it was peeling.

The cloth roof looked in great condition.

Please view the photos and video below to review the condition of the glass and trim for yourself.

Interior

Blue leather seats match the colour of the roof, complimenting the exterior.

Seats and Carpets

The seats were showing some signs of age, with creases noticed in the leather on both front seats, on the bolsters and also the lower section. The rear seats were showing some creases on the lower sections too.

The blue carpets matched the seats and looked in good condition, we noticed a few discoloured areas but nothing go major concern.

Please take a look at the photos and video below to decide on the condition of the seats and carpets for yourself.

Dashboard

The dashboard looked in good condition, the clocks looked clean and fog free, the odometer read 110,031 at our visit, however, we did notice the speedometer didn't seem to work when out on the road, the odometer also seems to be frozen, as the last few MOTs are reading 110,031 miles.

We did notice a very small split in the top of the dashboard and the material in the pocket in front of the gear selector seems to be peeling up, both can be seen in the photos below.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original 3-spoke BMW steering wheel was present, with the M colours on the bottom prong. The steering wheel looked in good condition, it was showing some signs of age on its rim but nothing serious.

The gear selector looked in good condition too, the surround for the selector had become dislodged though, it should be an easy fix. The button for the handbrake was also sunken down into the handbrake. We also noticed a couple of missing trim pieces on the passenger door which can be seen in the photos below.

Please take a look at the photos and video below to check the condition of the steering wheel and gear stick for yourself.

Mechanics

The 2.5L straight-six was at the heart of the E30, producing ~168bhp.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine started first time without hesitation, Dylan had taken the car for a wash in the morning but we started the car once it had cooled down again after the photos and videos were taken. The engine sounded great, we didn't hear anything untoward from the engine.

The automatic gearbox felt good, changes were smooth and without issue.

Please take a look at the cold start video below to see for yourself the performance of the engine and gearbox.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension felt good on our run with Dylan's dad, taking the bumps with ease and no unwanted knocking noticed.

The brakes felt good with decent bite on your run, we did notice some squeaking which seemed to come from the rear brakes after setting off, it cleared when up to speed, possibly a sticky caliper.

Please take a look at the on the road video below to see how the suspension and brakes performed.

The Drive

On the short drive the 325i felt good, the engine was responsive and gearshifts were smooth.

The suspension felt good with the car riding over uneven roads well.

To see the car in motion please take a look at the on the road video below.

Electrics and Other

We didn't test all the electrics in the car but we did use the windows, which worked, they were a bit sticky coming up but we put that down to the cold weather, the lock button for the windows worked too. As mentioned earlier the speedometer and odometer were not working, the rev counter was though.

Dylan told us all other electric were working to his knowledge.

We folded down the roof but couldn't quite get it into the storage compartment, we didn't have the knack to it, but it will go down if you know what you're doing.

History and Paperwork

A nice little 325i that's ready for a little bit of love to bring it up a level.

The 325i comes with very little history, owned by Dylan's family for ~2 years and 8 months, previous to this it was owned by the dad of one of Dylan's friends.

The car comes with a vaild MOT until 06.09.2024, the odometer seems to have stopped working at sometime between the 2010 and 2020 MOTs. Overall the 325i Convertible could do with some TLC bring it to a higher standard.

A5 JXH personal registration is included in the sale.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
