Introduction

Alan Stuart
Professional Consigner and Photographer

The BMW E24 was one of the most desirable cars of the '80s, with relatively low production numbers very few still remain on the road making this a wonderfully rare model.

The BMW E24 is the first generation of 6 Series range of grand tourer cars, heavily revised in 1982, the upgrades led to big improvements throughout the 6 Series, from revised styling to upgraded electronics and suspension.

Produced solely as a 2 door coupe, the chassis platform was shared with the outstanding E12 5-Series, widely considered to be the best handling saloon setup in the world at the time. With its straight-six petrol powered engine, the majority of these models used a version of the BMW M30 engine family and with a production run of 27 years, it is BMW's longest produced engine and was used in many car models.

A huge part of the 635 CSi appeal is in its ability to be a comfortable and long-legged cruiser as well as offering serious cross-country performance – all accompanied by the cultured engine note from the 3.5L straight-six. Packing together hand-stitched Nappa leathers, seductive coupe styling, a spacious open interior, cavernous boot and large capacity engine makes this a real great example.

A really important factor on this car is the sheer amount of work given to this beautiful BMW. The bodywork having largely been fully restored with in-excess of ~£20,000 being spent on this alone. Additional works have also included full automatic gearbox overhaul, new suspension shocks, mounts, anti roll bar, fuel tank, torque converter and fuel pump being upgraded. The BMW 635 CSi is truly ready for its new keeper to enjoy and cherish for years to come.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Alan after meeting Anthony the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

One of my favourite cars of all time - when I saw it on offer I knew I had to own it.

When Anthony set his eyes on the 635 CSi he knew it was the car for him. Anthony told us, "I've always been a fan of BMW, the drive and handling of the car was perfect for my daily commute and I wanted a car that was comfortable but also offered me some power behind the looks".

This particular model of the 635 CSi is a 'Highline' variant meaning the additional spec adds in extensive use of hand stitched Nappa leathers throughout the interior. Having been cared for considerably over the course of its life, Anthony mentions that the upgrades and work put into the car has been well worth it - he said, "It has been a car that I've always wanted to own, I've actually owned a similar BMW previously but had to have one again after I sold my previous one. I had to make sure this one was kept in a great condition to preserve its history for the future".

With the current owners commute time considerably less than before and new projects on the horizon, the time has come for Anthony to help the 635 CSi along its journey to the next owner. Anthony said, "I'll be sad to see it go but I need to turn my focus onto different paths now".

Exterior

With its sleek Diamond Black finish and angular panel lines, the 635 CSi is a remarkably stylish car standing out from modern day rivals.

Wheels and Tyres

The BMW E28 multi-spoke examples, pictured in the main feature shots, show with a few signs of wear along the edges and do show their age a little when looking at detail on the centre cap sections. We noted a few chips in the finish on the front rims with the rear sections showing in a little better condition. However, not a big issues these days and a very affordable and easy fix to have them reconditioned.

The 635 CSi comes with 2 sets of wheels, those featured in the main images and a set of original TX alloys with Michelin tyres, as featured in the gallery sections.

The main wheels were wrapped in Avon ZV1s showing tyre date codes from 2018 and 2020.

Bodywork

Looking at the angles around the car when we visited showed the car in great light. It was tricky to find any major issues with the external bodywork sections with panels and shut lines showing well.

There was a small area where the drivers side of the sunroof showed a little section of marking, and a small section above the windscreen where there were some signs of wear. During our visit to see the car we took a 360 tour around the exterior showing all angles in the light of day.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves, including the underside.

Paint

The 635 has been really well cared for over the course of its life which is evident in the work given to the car, and its paint and bodywork receipts detailed in the paperwork gallery section. The paint finish looked great all the way around the car and retains its BMW charm throughout.

We've taken high resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves. The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

Overall the glass sections present well, the front windscreen is a replacement given the Pilkington brand glass now in place. A few signs of stone chipping are evident but weren't a major issue and presented no issues with clarity looking out from the interior.

The side windows show different registration details to the shown reg, but had no issues with the presentation of the glass. Trim showed well and rubber sections looked to be in a good condition also.

Take a look through the exterior gallery and review video, we take you across all the areas of the car as if you were standing there for yourself. This way, you can see in greater detail what a great looking vehicle the BMW really is.

Interior

With its 'Highline' additional spec, the 635 CSi adds extensive use of hand stitched Nappa leathers throughout the interior showing beautifully intricate details.

Seats and Carpets

Comfortable and inviting grey leather seating greets the driver and passengers inside the 635. The front seats are showing their age a little with the drivers seat showing signs of wear on the bolster section along with a little tear to the same section. The driver seat features an electronic memory function allowing customisation for the seating setup.

Looking over the rear part of the seating, looks as though the seats have barely been used over their life, showing few signs of issues and presenting nicely. Carpet sections of the interior showed a few signs of wear and could benefit from some valet work to bring them up to a nicer condition.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images covering off the cabin area of the 635.

Dashboard

Classic late '80s styling looks great across the dash area of the BMW.

Dials and gauges displayed without issue and showed no signs of fogging or cracks across the dash display. The grey trim showed a little sign of usage but given that the car has been in regular use over its ~33 year history, still displayed nicely.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A straight forward approach to the steering setup shows a 3 spoke BMW wheel at the hands of the driver. The BMW emblem still shows really nicely at the centre of the steering wheel, the overall appearance does show a fair amount of usage but is in keeping with the history of the car and is the original. Auto gear shifter shows in a respectable condition given the vehicle history and includes the 3 speed auto drive option.

We've detailed some more images of the cabin area including the steering wheel in our Interior Gallery section - head over to see more shots of what's on offer with the 635 CSi.

Mechanics

Quality BMW engineering still stands the test of time - even when compared to today's standards.

Engine and Gearbox

Running comfortably from initial startup and idling nicely, the engine showed no signs of concern from a very cold start given the weather conditions, as seen in the cold start video.

Take a look at our "Mechanical Review" video where we see the car starting up and running. Following the cold start, we were unable to take the car out on the road fully. This was because we faced extreme weather temperatures with large amounts of snow and ice - so the road test wasn't safely able to be completed with this in mind.

Suspension and Brakes

Due to the weather conditions at the time of our visit we were unable to take the BMW for a full test drive. That said, Anthony, the current owner has had this car in regular usage with the main journeys being trips between the airport and his home address due to his past career in aviation.

Anthony reports no concerns with the suspension or the braking functions when the car is in use. Additionally, the MOT from June 2022 showed no advisories or issues with suspension components or the braking system.

The Drive

BMW is typically famed for its style, comfort, and performance all in one sleek package. The 635 covers these areas comfortably still looking fantastic after its ~30+ years on the road.

Whilst unable to fully take the car through its paces due to the weather we faced at the time of our visit, turning the car over and going through the cold startup showed without struggle, even with near freezing temperatures outside.

Electrics and Other

Lovely little features such as the original BMW torch are included inside the glovebox area. A BMW immobiliser is functioning as part of the vehicle security features. Heaters and lights were tested and shown to be working without concern. The 635 also features an electric sunroof although given the weather conditions we were unable to test this fully.

Anthony has reported that all other areas of the electrical system are in line with the rest of the condition of the car, i.e. in full working order to his knowledge.

History and Paperwork

With a wealth of paperwork covering its bodywork restoration, the ~16 years of current ownership have readied this BMW 635 CSi for its future owner to fully cherish.

The sheer amount of paperwork denoting the work carried out on the car is a really welcoming sight with the BMW. Having largely been fully restored with in-excess of ~£20,000 being spent on bodywork restoration alone. Additional works have also included full automatic gearbox overhaul, new suspension shocks, mounts, anti roll bar, fuel tank, torque converter and fuel pump being upgraded.

Detailed in the paperwork gallery section we cover off the receipt for the various projects that have been actioned over the course of the 635 CSi's history. We've given the overview of the works in a little more detail below.

Several pieces of key work were performed on the car; sunroof section and both offside and nearside wheel arches were repaired in 2006 and resprayed costing £1,400, rear quarter panels and rear sections were replaced and repaired costing over £3,500 in 2008, corrosion repair work was carried out across the rear in January 2011 costing over £2,000, the sump gasket and sub frame was replaced in March 2012, in September 2013 a major job included tackling the front wings and panels and roof repairs to the cost of £3,929. Front shock absorbers and top mounts were replaced in May 2016 with the rears being replaced in the previous year. In August 2016 the offside rear quarter panel, off side edge of the sunroof, rear bumper, rear trim and rear panels were repaired. New Billstein front shocks were fitted in October 2016.

Anti roll bar links were replaced in November 2017. The rear suspension units were repaired and replaced and any outstanding corrosion on the underbody was repaired in August 2018 totalling £2,769. A new fuel tank was supplied, painted and fitted in September 2018. The torque converter and a full automatic gearbox overhaul was actioned in June 2019 costing £1,720. A new fuel pump was supplied and fitted in October 2019. New front foot well panels and rear flooring sections were replaced, sealed and treated with anti-corrosion oils in September 2020 totalling over £2,500

Roof panel, rear quarter panels, bonnet, boot interior and boot lid, right hand door and upper front panel were all resprayed and reconditioned in October 2020. Alongside this work, a new crossmember, chassis section, boot plates in floor were repaired and fabricated at the same time - the total cost of which totalled over £6,500. The BMW 635 CSi is truly ready for its new keeper to enjoy and cherish for years to come.
