Introduction

Alan Stuart
Professional Consigner

One of the M-Divisions best 90s creations, a real pocket rocket featuring the same 3.2L straight six from the M3.

The BMW Z3 Roadster first launched in 1995, based on the same chassis as the E36 3 series. It was available as a roadster or coupe and used the rear semi-trailing arm suspension design from the older E30. M-Division engineers worked hard to create an M version of the Z3, and used the majority of the components from the E36 M3 Evo to create such car. The rear track was widened, curvaceous rear arches were installed to accommodate the much larger wheels, new bumpers, quad-exhaust, and interior trim made the Z3M a rather unique beast.

Finished in arguably the best colour - 'Estoril Blue' with individual specified black/blue leather interior, this example comes to auction with only ~41,000 miles on the clock and 7 years of ownership. This Z3M is ready for any enthusiast's collection.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Alan after meeting Nick the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I've always had my eye on the Z3M since it launched, and was lucky enough to purchase this example in 2014.

Nick has owned this M roadster for 7 years, he spent around a year looking at examples until he came across this excellent example in the popular Estoril Blue paint. When we spoke to him, he mentioned how much he loves the look and the sound this car produces "Going through the New Forest with the roof down, the exhaust notes reverberating around, it's quite an experience".

Having done his research when first purchasing the car, he had the Vanos checked over and has kept the car serviced with regular oil changes to ensure no issues develop. The car's been stored in a humidity controlled environment in his garage, more recently a lack of use has made Nick think someone needs to be driving this car and so it comes to market with us.

Nick will be more than happy to answer any questions on the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Finished in the M-Colour - Estoril Blue, combined with all the custom functional panels on this car make it a real head-turner.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with the factory correct "Roadstar" Style 40 17" BMW wheels, all wrapped in Pirelli P-zero tyres both the wheels and tyres appear in excellent condition.

Please take a look at the images and video review, the deep dish rear wheels really look the part with the wider track on the back of the car.

Bodywork

The bodywork looks in excellent condition on this M-Division example, all the panel gaps look good and Nick reports the car doors open and close with ease.

The convertible hood looks in great condition with no obvious signs of wear and tear - we captured a video of it in operation, found within the exterior videos. With the car being kept in a climate controlled environment in the garage, and limited use, it helps to explain the condition. Please take a look at the photos for a closer look at the exterior of this car.

Paint

The Estoril Blue metallic paint really looks the part, even in finish and colour across all the panels.

During our inspection, we noticed some very minor stone chips on the bonnet that have already been attended to with touch-up paint, a small amount reflective of the limited mileage this car has covered in its life.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a closer view at the paintwork on this car.

Glass and Trim

The glass looks in great condition, with no signs of cracks, chips, or discoloration. The convertible hood looks in great condition too. Some of the M badges on the car have a slight fading in colour that comes with age.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed tour of this very special M-Division convertible.

Interior

The M Roadster interior is a step up on a standard Z3, with almost all the cabin wrapped in leather and metallic flourishes to the functional items.

Seats and Carpets

Z3Ms often feature two-tone full leather seats, this example optioned with a blue/black combination which match the exterior colour of the car. With the Z3M model, other features such as the doors also featured leather, along with the centre console being fully wrapped too.

This example looks in very good condition in line with the mileage. Some very minor wear and creases can be found on the driver's bolsters, nothing an expert detailer couldn't work some magic on.

Please take a look at the video review to appreciate the condition of the interior.

Dashboard

An interior to match the exterior, the full leather colour-matched centre console gives the sense of a special occasion whenever you're driving this roadster.

The condition of the dashboard is in line with its age and car's mileage. The voltmeter, clock, and oil temperature gauges in the leather-wrapped centre console also look great.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a closer look.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The two-tone theme is continued on the M-Sport Steering wheel. Blue inserts, and the M-Sport coloured stitching on leather wrapped steering wheel clean and clearly visible.

As pictured, the car had an AC Schnitzer gear stick and pedals fitted at some point in its life.

Please take a look at the detailed 360 tour of this interior.

Mechanics

Special M-Division treatment in the form of a 3.2L straight-six, which will take you to 60MPH in a swift 4.5 seconds.

Engine and Gearbox

Featuring the 3.2L 320BHP engine from the E36 M3, and only a 5 speed manual gearbox option, the Z3 was transformed completely. It didn't stop with the drivetrain; LSD fitted, wider rear track, larger brakes, along with a host of design tweaks too.

We captured a cold start video of the Z3M which can be found in the mechanical video, the car started straight away with no fuss at all, and Nick reports no known issues with the car. The Vanos was checked for any faults back in 2014, and the car had its last full service in 2017, having only done just ~2,000 miles since.

Suspension and Brakes

The car uses a rear semi-trailing arm suspension design from the E30, Many commentators went so far as to call it the best handling car in the world! Brakes were taken from the E36 M3 Evo and offer a significantly more stopping power over a stock Z3.

Nick reports to us the car drives just as it should.

The Drive

A thrilling ride awaits, Nick tells us "I love everything about the drive from being low to the ground to the exhaust notes. I love it best on a dry sunny day with the roof down driving around in the New forest and up to the coast. The best way to describe the driving experience is awesome! There is plenty of power if you want it and it is quite happy to sit at 30mph around town. A truly brilliant piece of German engineering".

Electrics and Other

The interior can be differentiated from other Z3s with the addition of the voltmeter, clock, and oil temperature gauges found in the leather-wrapped centre console.

The car is fitted with an aftermarket CD player, and Nick reports having the original 6-CD Stack player available if the new owner would like it.

Nick reports all the electrics are working on the car to his knowledge and only thing that needs attention would be the air-con re-gassing.

History and Paperwork

A well-cared-for example, coming out of long ownership and just ~41,000 miles covered in Estoril Blue make it a very appealing package.

Owned by Nick for the previous 7 years, and lack of use more recently and desire to see the car driven is bringing the car to sale. Finished in Estoril Blue over a blue/black full leather interior, this is one highly desirable and original Z3M, priced for a new owner to enjoy.

Please take a look at the photos of the paperwork section to see the money spent on parts, maintenance, and MOTs over the years. Nick had the cars Vanos tested when purchased in 2014 and ensured careful use and servicing post this. The car comes with 2 sets of keys.

We have actioned our usual checks; Seller ID, V5C, HPi.

Hi Nick, are there any issues with overheating on longer journeys? Also, are you willing to put the car through a proper service prior to pick up. Thanks Kevin

Hi Nick, thanks for your reply, it was a general Q re rust on the underside.
A few more Qs, you say about including the original cd changer if required in the boot does this include the original radio cassette stereo?. Is the passenger side seatbelt guide on the seat broken? Has the car ever been recorded as a Cat S or any other Cat? and is there a tonneau cover provided.?
Thanks
Paul

Hi, looking at the video, under the vehicle there appears to be some rust, can you confirm this has been looked at and this is just surface rust.
Thanks.
