Introduction

Alan Stuart
Professional Consignor

An American classic that ticks all the boxes; V8 engine, long wheelbase, wide chassis, iconic 60s American styling.

Introduced under its own nameplate for the first time in 1961, the Chrysler Newport was a bang for buck kind of car, low balling the competition on price, overdelivering on options, and offering a stylish and practical car fit for the entire family. Packing a 383 cubic inch V8 (6.3L), the Newport was indeed a ‘Big Block’ American Muscle despite its extravagant design flare and entry level price. Producing ~330BHP from new meant this big and bulky family saloon car was no slouch either.

This particular example comes to market from ~7 year ownership, the vendor had it imported to the UK and with only ~8,900 KMs showing on the clock too, this is a well looked after and pristinely kept example.

This listing was written from information supplied by Alan after meeting Ron the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Having always been a lover of classic cars I first saw and rode in a Newport at a local classic car show, and after speaking with the owner I was made aware of a similar car for sale in the states - the rest is history!

Ron is a big fan of classic cars, especially American classics. At a local American classic show he bumped into the owner of a Chrysler Newport who was kind enough to offer him a ride along, during which time he mentioned a good condition example for sale by a friend back in the states as part of a collection, so Ron got in touch and was delighted to hear the car was believed to have only had some 8,000 KMs on the clock and had been kept in excellent condition.

After agreeing the sale with the owner Ron had the car imported to the UK and was exhilarated to see the condition of the car, exactly as described - immaculate inside, outside, and underneath. Now the proud owner of a 1961 Chrysler Newport Ron has cherished the car as part of his collection since 2016, however he is now looking to sell the car due to having had years of enjoyment. He'll be happy to answer any questions on the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

With its iconic tail fins, typical American design cues, the Chrysler Newport is a real head turner dressed in red with a white soft-top, it's hard not to admire this beautiful American classic.

Wheels and Tyres

Starting as we mean to go on the chrome faced wheels are in immaculate condition, with absolutely no damage, pitting, or other defects noted on our visit.

Likewise the tyres are in excellent condition, with no visible damage to the whitewall tyres and plenty of tread left across the board. Take a look through the gallery to see the detail.

Bodywork

The intricate design of the Newports bodywork is totally pristine, with no damage, misaligned panels, or evidence of old bodywork to speak of. Ron is of the impression that the car is as it was when it left the factory and with only ~8,900 KMs showing on the clock in nearly 60 years it’s hard to disagree.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The stunning paintwork looks fantastic, with buckets of gloss and plenty of depth, it is in truly remarkable condition. There are no visible scratches, scuffs, or other issues with the paintwork and the tone and shade of the paintwork is even across all panels, lending itself to the belief that the car is original and as new.

Again, we have taken high resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves. The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

As with the rest of the exterior the glass and brightwork on the car is also in excellent condition, with no pitting on any of the chrome items and no chips, scratches, or cracks in any of the glass.

The soft-top is in remarkable condition too as pictured, and operates as it should.

Interior

With its white leather upholstery and chrome dash, the Newports interior is not only the epitome of 60s American automotive styling, but flawlessly presented throughout.

Seats and Carpets

The white leather upholstery looks virtually untouched, with almost no visible signs of wear and tear, and no colour transfer or dye stains - common on white leather such as this. The carpets are in equally good condition, with very little wear and no obvious colour bleaching either.

Dashboard

The black leather and chrome faced dashboard is undeniably full of character, a long way away from the uniform plastic dashboards of the modern world. The dash itself is in excellent condition too, with no visible damage to any of the chromework, leather, or switchgear, and everything seems to operate exactly as it should too.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The elliptical design of the steering wheel is as unique as the rest of the car, with it’s non-uniform shape as eye catching as it is interesting. The condition of the steering wheel is of course fantastic, matching the rest of the interior.

Lacking a physical gearshift, the Newport is ahead of its time with PRND buttons adorning the left side of the dashboard.

Mechanics

Powered by a 383 V8 engine, the Chrysler Newport produced ~330BHP from its ‘Big Block’ American powertrain and drives the rear wheels via its three speed automatic Torqueflite transmission.

Engine and Gearbox

The 383 V8 is a 6.3L big block engine produced and manufactured by Chrysler, providing more power and torque than its competition, it subsequently became the Mopar performance engine model for the next decade.

During our ‘Cold Start’ video you can see the engine start from cold with no issues whatsoever and during our ‘On The Road’ video the car performs faultlessly, with the 3 speed Automatic transmission changing through gears without hesitation. Take a look for yourself, and the very well kept engine bay.

Suspension and Brakes

The Chrysler Newport uses torsion bar suspension on the front and leaf spring suspension on the rear and when looking underneath the car you can see these items to be in fantastic condition, with no major rust or damage to be seen.

When out on the road the ride was fantastic and exactly as you’d expect from a big American car such as this. Likewise the brakes worked a treat, with no squealing, grinding, or other untoward noises from any corner.

The Drive

The Newport is the perfect car for wafting along freeways, taking leisurely drives along the coast, and enjoying the summer weather. With its big block V8 rumbling away in front of you, wind in your hair, and soft comfortable ride, the Newport is a delightful car to be in - when speaking with Ron the floaty nature of American classics such as this are exactly what made him fall in love with the car in the first place.

Electrics and Other

Ron tells us that all the electrics are in fully working order, and during our time spent with the car we noted nothing to the contrat, with all exterior lights working as expected and similarly all internal electrics seemed to operate without fault also.

History and Paperwork

This immaculately presented 1961 Chrysler Newport is a rare find on British soil and one you definitely don’t want to miss out on, with what is believed to be a genuine ~8,900 KMs from new.

Imported to the UK in 2016 by current owner Ron, this car was purportedly part of a collection at home in the US where it was well maintained as can be seen in our various image galleries. Inside out this car is immaculately presented and does not fail to impress. The history of the car before it landed in the UK is undocumented, however the condition of the car is the real selling point, of which there is little to complain about, and it is believed to be a ~8,900 KMs car although there isn't paperwork to warrant this. The only thing this car needs is to be driven, which is exactly why Ron has decided now is the time to sell up.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in high resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
