Introduction

Glyn Parry
Professional Consigner

The Daimler Double-Six is truly in a class all of its own - join the V12 club, affordably.

The XJ (X300) was unveiled in 1994 and was the start of Jaguars renaissance after a huge investment in the company. The results were immediate, with the return of quality and reliability virtues after several years in the doldrums. The LWB model, known internally as the X330 Majestic were converted by Project Aerospace in Coventry and then refitted at Jaguar Special Vehicle Operations (SVO). Just 1,230 of these 155mph grand tourers were produced making them a rare car and a bit of a wolf in sheep's clothing.

The Double-Six represents the last of an era for Jaguar, as the wonderfully smooth V12 was to be the brand's last application of the engine. Because of this and combined with this cars excellent maintenance and presentation, makes it a rare opportunity to obtain the last of the breed. It has seen four previous owners, each one keeping on top of its servicing and maintenance needs, resulting in a stack of paperwork and full-service history. The car was also subject to a cosmetic body restoration in 2013.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting Steven the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I felt that Trade Classics is the best place for me to find a genuine enthusiast - I really want to find a Jaguar petrolhead like me to take the baton.

The car is currently owned by Steven, a prominent surgeon, and has been mainly used at weekends. Steven used to own an XJ V12 and has fond memories of the cars impressive feel and ability. However, circumstances have changed and has made the tough decision to find a new owner.

Exterior

Beautifully presented - the car was subject to a body restoration in 2013.

Wheels and Tyres

The alloys wheel are in good condition with no significant damage or signs of corrosion, although the centre cap logos show signs of age.

The grippy Falken Ziex tyres have plenty of tread and are within legal limits.

Bodywork

The bodywork on this example is very good indeed, with overflowing evidence of a charmed life.

Of course the panel gaps and fit are good throughout, with no signs of damage or rust bubbles.

The engine bay and boot are good and so too is the underside - all looking in solid condition.

Being picky, there are a small number of blisters coming through around the sunroof.

Paint

The Metallic Spruce green paint is in very good condition, with a decent and even finish throughout.

The car was subject to a body restoration in 2013, which has paid dividends in the presentation of the car, which also includes a pinstripe.

Glass and Trim

The glass condition is good throughout, with no issues with the condition.

No significant scratches were observed and all in decent order.

The chrome trim, mirrors and door handles are in good condition with very little signs of age.

All of the glass and door rubbers are in good condition.

Interior

Sumptuous and oozing with quality, the interior quality is unparalleled - it makes you feel like royalty.

Seats and Carpets

The driver's seat, shows the usual signs of ageing, with light wear evident on the bolster and base, but in good condition with no other damage.

All the other seats are in good condition.

The carpets are good, with no significant wear or damage. The mats might benefit a clean but are in good condition too. The door cards are good, with a few signs of scuffing on the driver's door.

Overall a beautiful interior that could be made even better.

Dashboard

The dashboard is well presented, with the leather and veneer finishing on the dashboard and centre console retaining its quality.

The switches, dials and controls are in good condition and all were tested as working (including all four electric seat controls) although a notable exception is the sunroof which is currently non-functional.

The headlining is clean and without any damage.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel has noticeable signs of scuffing on the leather - an easy fix for the new owner.

Mechanics

With a strong history of maintenance, the mechanics offer plenty of confidence.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine presentation correlates with the amount of servicing attention it has received and is both visually and mechanically sound.

The engine starts up beautifully, ticking over nicely and reaching temperature with no issues.

No engine rattle was observed.

Suspension and Brakes

No issues have been reported regarding the suspension, it has seen replacement rear shocks in the past.

The brakes are said to be good, with no problems regarding wear or their performance.

The Drive

The sheer level of comfort and decadence of ride is a unique experience, but one that is undeniably rooted in the Daimler DNA.

The quality of components together with Steven's assurance means that there are no issues with the way the car drives, or any noticeable issues with the running gear.

Electrics and Other

The electrics on the car have been checked, and all of the dashboard items are functional, including the electric steering adjustment and ariel.

History and Paperwork

The car has seen regular servicing and has been fastidiously maintained - a big tick for the discerning buyer.

Bought from Jaguar Select in 2017, the car has also seen a fair amount of maintenance (including work by Tom Lenthall) and upkeep over the years with paperwork covering work to its electrics, cooling system, steering, rear shocks absorbers, ECU and a weighty bill to cosmetically smarten the car up in 2013.

Issues that have come up have been rectified, although the sunroof has not been functioning since the owner has had the car.

It has full-service history, with Jaguar stamps up to 2007, and specialist thereafter and also comes with much of its MOT history. It also comes with its Jaguar heritage trust documentation which verifies its specification authenticity and confirms its previous 3 owners.

The car comes with an MOT to March 2022.

Hello. Could you tell me if the rust on the sunroof is also on the main roof itself? Could you post a closeup picture of it and any other corrosion areas.
Does air conditioning work and all electrics?
Thanks Bob

Hi, I have previously two of these both 1996 versions, it looks great for it’s age.

Other than what has been noted in the listing / description / response to questions are there any other known faults at all?

If I win I will be travelling back in it to the North West, are you confident I would not notice any faults on this journey, and I mean more than just a bulb etc

Hi
Nice looking car, shame about the lower front valance panel being damaged, maybe speed hump? The oil cooler or is it the AC condenser/oil cooler looks vulnerable, did that suffer any damage?
Lastly, no ‘on the one road’ listen to the engine running, unlike other cars listed.

Regards Martin

Just to add to Steven’s reply. The lack of video was due to a memory card corruption. I can confirm that I started the car several times during the shoot and each time it started instantly and runs very smoothly without any unwanted noises.

The car looks like a credit to you. Thank you for keeping it in the current condition. A few questions – Is there a reserve price on this auction? The wear on the drivers seat bolster, steering wheel and accelearor pedal rubber suggest a fair higher mileage – have the chassis and engine numbers on the documents been checked against those on the physical vehicle? I understand that the sunroof is not functioning. Is the switch dead or can one here the motor straining when it is activated? Was the car suppled without mud guards or have these been removed?… Read more »

The mileage is genuine, sun roof has been disabled as there is a broken part. Previous owner was unable to repaire. No mud guards were fitted.
