Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Photographer and Editor

The Ferrari 400 provides ample V12 power in an elegant Pininfarina styled GT.

Fulfilling a role in the Ferrari line as their 4-seater grand tourer, the Pininfarina-styled coupe proved to be Ferrari's longest production Ferrari. Its longevity can be attributed to its useful and spacious three-box design, usable boot and comfort, values not often associated with Ferrari. The 400's uncluttered styling and simple lines were hallmarks of Pininfarina’s design philosophy of the time and marked a radical departure from the contoured Ferraris of the time. Making it the most usable of Ferraris, purists grumbled about the front-engine layout and automatic gearbox option, but the use of the Colombo V12 engine, which traces its roots back to the Ferrari race engines of the 1940s, makes every inch of those angular lines a full-red-blooded Ferrari. First introduced in 1976, the 400 was an evolution of the 365 GT4 2+2, fitted with the bigger 4.8 L F 101 C V12 engine. In total, 355 cars left the factory of which 137 were right-hand drive. Subsequent versions were upgraded with bigger engines and upgraded styling, allowing the model to remain in production until 1989.

This beautifully presented example comes to market from ~5.5 year ownership, is a genuine UK spec car finished in "Rosso Sir Ivor" with a black leather interior. It has a comprehensive history file and underwent a bare-metal respray and mechanical renovation in 2001. It has just ~62,182 miles and was last serviced around ~500 miles ago. Even though the car is exempt from MOTs and road tax, it comes with an MOT to April 2026, two boxes of spare parts, hundreds of invoices, a healthy servicing and maintenance schedule, a full owner's wallet and booklets, a period brochure and two keys.

This listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Bharat the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

The power and sound of the V12 Colombo is so special, and it's a delight on long drives.

Bharat was attracted to the condition and provenance of the car, having been previously owned by a well known member of the Ferrari community who had the car comprehensively restored. It has been maintained by Ferrari Specialist Shiltech during his ~5.5 year ownership.

Due to him living oversea’s, Bharat rarely get’s the chance to enjoy the car and tells us that it's such a shame for such an amazing car to be sat in storage and not enjoyed. He will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

The smart bodywork and decent paint finish highlight the handsome chiselled styling.

Wheels and Tyres

The factory magnesium Cromodora wheels are smartly presented, with just minor signs of age noted.

The Pirelli P4000 tyres are over 15 years old but have plenty of tread.

image

Bodywork

The exterior panels are flush to the body, with decent shut lines. All doors open and close with no obstructions, although the passenger doors won’t stay fully open. The bonnet struts are up to the job. The door wells are in good shape with decent seals, the nearside door bottom edge shows mild distortion. There are also some under-paint bubbles on the front corner of the same door but overall the Ferrari displays exceptionally well.

The car's structure is positive, with no immediate suggestions of problems as it was subject to a bare-metal restoration in 2001. The floor pan, engine bay, wheel wells or suspension mounts are all clean. We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

image

Paint

The "Rosso Sir Ivor" paint has a consistent finish and a lustre with a deep gloss. There is the occasional minor mark around the bonnet and chip on the nearside rear arch but nothing that distracts, a focus on the nose of the car and the boot lid edge shows mild under-paint imperfections. With the car being painted in 2001, over time there are swirl marks that come with age/washing, as visible and pictured in the sun.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

image

Glass and Trim

The glass is in good shape with decent seals. The headlamps are in good condition. The nearside rear red lens and front indicator lens have fractures.

The trim is complete, there's a minor distortion on the grille trim chrome but the rest of the brightwork presents nicely. Both bumpers show wear in the form of scuffs on their corners, and some signs of age in the forms of a slightly faded colour.

image

Interior

The interior has been well-cared for and retains a little patina-chic.

Seats and Carpets

Fitted with leather seats, the front pair have age-related creases and a little bolster wear but retain a firm hold. The Wilton carpets and mats are in good shape with no signs of dampness.

The luggage compartment carpet is clean. No issues were noted with the trim.

image

Dashboard

The dashboard is in good order, and the leather padding is free of marks, with minor age-related wear noted on the binnacle padding and some plastics.

The dials are all legible and tested to function as they should. The centre console switches and controls look good, and the veneer has a few minor fractures but the overall presentation remains impressive. The passenger electric mirror function seemed to be the only fault.

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original style Momo steering wheel has a pleasing patina as pictured. The automatic gear selector and surround is clean.

image

Mechanics

The relaxed nature of the car is complemented by the unique charm of the V12 engine.

Engine and Gearbox

The V12 "Colombo" engine fires up immediately. There was no unwanted smoke from the exhaust and the gauges all remained in check. The car idles when cold and smoothens out considerably once we hit the road. The 6 twin choke Weber carburettors appear to be well balanced with no pops or bangs.

The engine is beautifully presented, showing evidence of maintenance and upkeep. The storage facility maintains the car, starting it up at least once a month. Once warmed up the 3-speed automatic gearbox worked well with no reported issues. It shifts with no harsh kicks or grinding and is instantaneous with no slippage. During the test drive, we didn’t hear any untoward noses or unwanted burning smells.

image

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension dealt with the roads with no negative feedback, absorbing the bumps and uneven surfaces with no thuds or noises heard from the wheels. The ride is comfortable and smooth. The suspension was completely overhauled in 1999.

The braking is effective, with no negative noises heard. There was no pulling to one side as the car slowed down. It was free of judders or any wobbles.

image

The Drive

The Ferrari 400's cruising ability is its main appeal, and we were treated to a lengthy run on a near-perfect day on a road that had a combination of gentle curves and generous straights. This allowed Julian, our test driver for the day, to demonstrate the car's civil manners. The Ferrari is composed at all speeds, happiest on the dual carriageway, Julian waited 10 or so minutes to allow the car to get up to temperature. The engine was very vocal and delivers a very smooth throttle response. The car started up when warm with no issues.

It felt quite agile, thanks to its low-geared steering. The power steering operated without any problems, remaining straight with no wobbles as Julian briefly released the hands from the wheel. The Ferrari holds the road exceptionally well, with no unwanted noises heard from the wheels when we cornered. The oil pressure remained in check, with the warm day not affecting the engine temperature in the slightest.

image

Electrics and Other

The headlamp operation worked as you would expect, while we didn't test everything on the day Bharat told us, to his knowledge that everything was in working order, with the exception of the nearside mirror.

History and Paperwork

Coming to market from ~5.5 year ownership, this UK RHD has seen an extensive amount of work in the last ~25 years, and was restored in ~2001.

The Ferrari comes with an impressive history file, consisting of folders full of invoices, restoration photos, a heritage certificate, detailed research, articles and workshop manuals. The service books document a comprehensive service history, with 24 instances of servicing in the booklets.

The car was previously owned by an independent Ferrari specialists who bought it in 1998 and comes with a folder of photos, events and documentation over the 22 years of his ownership. During this time the car saw an extensive renovation, resulting in 2nd place at the UK Ferrari Owner's Club Concours competitions in 2001. Other work included a new stainless steel exhaust, alternator, welding, brake work, front and rear suspension rebuild, carbs rebuild, engine clean up, glass reseal, reframed wheels, interior overhaul and a complete body strip down. Recent invoices are for alternator repairs, wiring, a bearing, brake pads and a new battery.

This previous owner also took the time and trouble to contact all of its previous keepers, essentially creating a biography for the car. There are copies of the old V5 documents to back his detailed notes up. There are also copies of the original sales invoice, sales brochure, dozens of photos showing the restoration work as well as club events and two boxes of spare parts. It also has its original tool kit and bag, along with its owner's wallet and booklets.

It retains its MOT certificates back to 1986. It was last serviced at 61,787 miles ~around 500 miles ago and has an MOT to April 2026, even though it is exempt from MOTs and road tax and has two keys.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment of the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

    Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price a seller is willing to accept for their vehicle. We work closely with sellers to set realistic reserves that reflect current market values — we don’t take on vehicles with inflated or unrealistic expectations.

If the reserve isn’t met when the auction ends, we’ll work with the highest bidder to try and agree a deal with the seller.

Whether the reserve has been met may / may not be disclosed during the auction — just like a traditional auction house. Bidders usually find out if they’ve won only when the auction ends.

    As a guide:
    – If you’re able to place a second bid, the reserve hasn’t been met.
    – If you attempt to outbid yourself and the system blocks it, then the reserve has been met.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.
