Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Photographer and Editor

The 328 is one of the most beautiful modern-era Ferraris and offers a sensible entry point to the illustrious brand.

Based on the 1970s 308 Series of Ferrari, the 328 took over in 1985 with modifications to the body, interior trim, chassis and engine. The car's sales success and comparative functionality, along with a positive reputation for reliability, and manageable ownership costs helped elevate the 328 as one of the most sought-after models to come out of Maranello.

The most significant transformation over the original was the installation of the fuel-injected 3.2L Tipo F105CB V8 engine, helping to rectify the original car's criticism for a lack of power. Transversely mounted just behind the passenger seats, the mid-engine layout gave the car a superbly balanced road-holding ability. Housed in an appealing hand-built Pininfarina-styled galvanised steel body within an oval-shaped tubular steel frame, the 328 GTB is a surprisingly rare version of the model, with just ~130 RHD models built.

This 1987 right-hand-drive example has a smart exterior presentation with a tan leather interior and black leather dashboard, it comes with a current MOT valid until November this year and recently had nearly £5k spend in April, including fresh cam belts. The car has an excellent history file from its time in the UK and has a few areas a new owner may want to improve over time.

This listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Charles the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Driving the 328 is a great driving experience; the V8 behind you sounds amazing!

The car belongs to Charles’ wife who used it as an occasional car after buying it back in 2010.

The Ferrari has been well looked after during the couple's ownership, as you'll see from invoices in the history file, and has always been kept in secure storage ever since obtaining it.

The car is now for sale simply due to the lack of use in recent years.

Charles will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Smartly presented in Rosso Red, the curvy styling and proportions still look sensational and turn heads.

Wheels and Tyres

The 16” Cromodora alloys are smartly displayed and show no significant signs of age- very good condition.

The car is fitted with a set of Toyo Proxis tyres, they’re over 10 years old with around minimum legal required tread, so could do with replacement soon.

image

Bodywork

The body displays nicely and is free of distracting damage, other than a handful of easily treatable minor dents on the offside outer sill, the rear edge of the nearside wing and the passenger door. There is also a very light dent on the roof above the driver-side door that you can see if you catch the light. As mentioned these are not thought to be concerning meaning a dent specialist may be able to remedy easily.

We also spotted some damage on the lower offside rear arch, mild bubbles on the nearside lower rear arch and the lip of the scuttle panel just above the rear bumper. All doors open and close without obstruction, and the panel fit is good throughout. In some shots you may notice the engine cover lid being slightly out of line, this is our fault for not shutting it properly.

The underside, floor pan and engine of the car are solid, and the front under tray and lowest section of the front panel display scuffs - typical of speed humps wear. There is an indentation on the offside rear section of the lower sill, just in front of the rear wheel.

We think a little time spent on remedying these points will pay dividend and bring the car up to a very good standard.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

image

Paint

The Rosso red paint finish has an excellent lustre, a consistent hue and a deep gloss - the tone is consistent around the car, even in direct sunlight.

Of course, there are a few minor blemishes on the paint and you'll see these in the images. To help point them out, we noticed a small fracture was spotted on the nearside corner of the nose, a touch-up on the edge of the nearside rear wing, a minor run on the nearside front wing arch and a small mark on the roof above the driver side door and some paint wearing thin neat it.

However, the overall verdict is a car free of any significant stone chips and displays very positively - again some simple remedies of the areas noted above will pay dividend and bring the car up a leve.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

image

Glass and Trim

The glass and seals are in great shape and the body trim presents well.

All of the lights and lenses are in good order.

The rear under panel has a fracture on the nearside corner.

The bumpers are flush to the body with just the rear bumper having a chip and paint crack on the offside corner, along with minor marks elsewhere.

image

Interior

In need of a little TLC, the cabin is still an inviting prospect and fully original - a comfy and driver focused feel from the moment you sit inside.

Seats and Carpets

The tan leather seats show age-related wear and would make ideal candidates for a reconnollising - a low cost project that would making a huge improvement to the look.

The inner driver's seat bolster is damaged and needs some attention.

The interior carpets also show signs of age but are all damp-free.

image

Dashboard

The black leather dashboard presents positively, with no cracks spotted on the black padding. There is minor wear on the edge of the binnacle, but otherwise, the leather has lasted well. It's just the centre console has mild signs of age.

All of the dials and controls display cleanly, all are believed to work as they should.

The door cards and headlining are in good condition, there is a little wear noted on the lower footwell trim. The front and rear luggage areas are tidy, the rear luggage rubber seal has split.

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original three-spoke leather-rimmed steering wheel presents positively.

The gear knob has fractured, with some wear noted on the gate.

image

Mechanics

This is where the 328 shines; the driving experience is 100% Ferrari and sounds as glorious as it looks.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine fires up immediately, as the dashboard warning lights remain off. The engine idled evenly, free of any exhaust smoke.

The engine displays well, with decent ancillaries and hoses. There are some signs of age noted on some components, but these appear to be cosmetic. We didn't spot any fluid leaks during our visit.

The gearbox works particularly well, as the oil warmed up, it became slicker and smoother.

The clutch is well-weighted and operates without any issues.

image

Suspension and Brakes

The ride is even and balanced, with no unwanted noises heard from the wheels. The car corners without any knocks and deals with the roads with no negative feedback.

The braking is impressive, stopping the car without drama, we slowed the car down from dual carriageway speeds down to 30, with no pulling from the steering wheel.

Please note we referred to the On the Road video as the car being fitted with ABS, this 1987 Model year 328 is not fitted with it.

image

The Drive

The mid-mounted V8 3.2-litre quattrovalvole engine likes to sing at a higher rev range. Around town, it's civil and docile but once on the open road it creates a spell that encourages you to press the gas pedal.

Adam was driving the Ferrari on this particular occasion as part of our VIP Auction package. Once warmed up, the engine became smoother with every passing minute. Free of electronic safety nets, the physical experience of the sharp unassisted steering, the very effective brakes and the slick dogleg gearbox is very impressive.

The steering while razor sharp, had no play but we felt minor vibrations on the steering wheel, which might just be down to wheel balancing and maybe a light rumble from a wheel bearing. The engine pulls exceptionally well with smoothness to its reaction to acceleration. It felt nimble and the ride quality was surprisingly civil and comfortable.

It goes without saying the car grips the road perfectly - all the right ingredients for an intoxicating and immersive experience.

The oil pressure and engine temperature stayed in check during our 20-minute drive, the car starts up immediately when warm too.

image

Electrics and Other

Everything works as expected, except we noticed the passenger door window lift is not operational (both switches) and both wing mirror motors struggle to adjust - the motors make a noise and the glass does move because it's tight on the surround, hindering its movement.

History and Paperwork

A fantastic opportunity to own a pre-ABS 328 coming from long ownership that's been well maintained and needs a little improvement.

First registered in 1987 for the Hong Kong market, this RHD car comes with a folder full of provenance from new - this includes 21 invoices for servicing. Pre-1999 invoices include HK Ferrari dealer servicing and maintenance, including clutch/suspension/coil work and a considerable amount of body repairs.

The car was imported into the UK in 1999 and retains a regular record of maintenance and servicing, including a new clutch, starter motor, brakes, suspension parts and sundry work.

The most recent work was carried out in March 2025, covering the machining of the cylinder head, head gasket, thermostat and service at the cost of £4,800. £2,200 worth of work on the cooling system was carried out in November 2024. It has an MOT to November 2025 and will be MOT and Road tax exempt in 2 years.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment of the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Hi, I’m not sure there is any whining – sounds right to me – it’s just had fresh service / cam belts too. Here’s another 328 starting up and sounds similar https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_MwgQofFXcM

    Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price a seller is willing to accept for their vehicle. We work closely with sellers to set realistic reserves that reflect current market values — we don’t take on vehicles with inflated or unrealistic expectations.

If the reserve isn’t met when the auction ends, we’ll work with the highest bidder to try and agree a deal with the seller.

Whether the reserve has been met may / may not be disclosed during the auction — just like a traditional auction house. Bidders usually find out if they’ve won only when the auction ends.

    As a guide:
    – If you’re able to place a second bid, the reserve hasn’t been met.
    – If you attempt to outbid yourself and the system blocks it, then the reserve has been met.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.
