Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Photographer and Editor

Cool, rare and desirable - The Consul Capri is also one of the most stylish and elegant designs to come out of Dagenham.

The 1960s were a time of great opportunity. After a period of austerity following World War II, the Jet Age had an impact on consumer goods as a result of growing prosperity. With styling cues taken straight from their American car division, the 1961 Consul Capri provided British consumers with the same glamour on a level suited to home-grown roads. The stylish Consul Capri, which had pillar-less windows and a distinctive sweeping design, was regarded as the Ford lineup's most distinctive model. In 1963, Ford also introduced the more potent Consul Capri GT. The engine was developed with Cosworth and had a modified twin-carburettor 1498cc engine, it also featured improved interior trim and instrument cluster. Just ~2002 Consul Capri's were produced, making it one of Ford's rarest cars. It also brought a little glitz to the Ford lineup before its better-known namesake revolutionised the sporting coupe of the 1970s.

One of the last models to have been produced, this July 1964 Consul Capri GT is finished in red with a taupe interior. It has only had 3 former registered keepers and has been kept unused in dry storage since 1986. A solid and complete restoration project, this car starts, rolls, and is smartly presented — and having been off the road for the past 39 years, it offers an exciting opportunity for an enthusiast to get it back on the road.

This listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Danny the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Stored in a garage, the Capri appears to have been left unused since the mid-80s!

Danny bought the car for himself, captivated by the stylish lines and recognising the potential in the GT variant. It was picked up from Hampshire and brought back to Danny's storage in Hertfordshire. He went about bringing the paint, interior and bright-work up to a better standard, as well as getting the engine starting and freeing the brakes.

With enough projects on his plate, he has decided to sell this solid and complete car as a restoration project and will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Despite four decades of lack of use, the car is solid and presents well.

Wheels and Tyres

The steel rims are in good shape. The chrome hubcaps show signs of age but are presentable as pictured.

The Dunlop tyres still hold air despite dating from the mid 1980s.

image

Bodywork

The body presents well, with no significant dents. There are a few corrosion spots noted, mostly at the base of the panels. The most obvious damage was seen on the bottom of the front offside lower arch lips, where it meets the sill. The shut lines are acceptable, and the panel flow is generally flush to the body. Coated in black inhibitor, there is a sheen of age on the underside and engine bay, but it looks solid. The boot floor and wheel wells look sound.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

image

Paint

The red paint has a decent lustre, having recently been detailed by a specialist as a way to help assess the condition of the metal. Most of the panels have micro-blistering present. The nose panel appears to have received an additional protective undercoat. The offside of the car has a few marks and light scratches, but considering the status of the car, it has fared well.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

image

Glass and Trim

The glass is in decent shape, with light scoring noted on the passenger glass. Most of the glass seals show their age, but do not appear to have let in water. The lights and lenses are neatly presented.

The trim is complete, most of the chrome work shows light pitting, and the offside sill trim is loose, but overall, it all displays well. The bumpers are mounted even to the body with age-related wear, but are free of significant corrosion or dents.

image

Interior

The interior has lasted well, and has seen a few rally-car inspired touches.

Seats and Carpets

The seats are in good shape. They'd benefit from a deep clean. The driver's side seat has a little damage on the side as pictured.

The carpet is in good condition with some wear in the driver's footwell, all damp free. The boot has a rubber mat, but is brittle. The car is fitted with floor mounted harnesses.

image

Dashboard

The dashboard vinyl padding is in good shape, and the facia wood finish has signs of age. The centre console binnacle is custom-made. It sports an impressive array of dials and toggle switches, which, along with the separate altimeter, have been influenced by the rally cars of the era. We didn’t test the controls for functionality, but the oil pressure gauge and amp metre were functional when the engine fired up.

The door cards are good with minor damage and some distortion. The headlining is a little grubby but free of rips. There is a little fray above the driver's side.

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel and gear lever are in line with the age of the car, but still look smart - both are free from any significant cracks.

image

Mechanics

The GT came with an engine developed by Cosworth, on this project it fires up and runs which is a good sign.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine turns over, but should be treated as a project of course. There was no water in the cooling system, so we only left the engine running for a short period. There was a little smoke from the exhaust, but the engine sounded even with no knocks or severe vibrations. The engine condition is reflected by its long-term storage; the metal components show their age, but the hoses and ancillaries generally look good.

We didn’t test the floor-change 4-speed gearbox or the clutch, as it appears to be seized.

image

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension components have a sheen of age but appear to be salvageable for refurbishment. It doesn’t have any working brakes.

image

The Drive

The GT is fitted with the Cosworth-developed five-bearing Kent 1.5-litre engine and would have been the flagship model of the era, thanks to the modified head, aluminium inlet manifold, and twin-choke carbs.

Due to the car's status as a restoration project, we couldn't take it for a test drive, but the car rolls and steers freely.

image

Electrics and Other

The windows wind up and down freely. The car has comes with a few spare parts, including the GT only centre console, an exhaust and a body panel.

History and Paperwork

A solid project of a rare Cosworth developed Ford Consul Capri GT, the engine runs, this car has seen just 3 former registered keepers and looks like a very exciting restoration candidate.

First registered by Coombes Ford of Guildford in July 1964, the car comes with a file full of provenance which goes back to 1971. There are invoices and receipts up to 1985, with work for welding, gearbox, clutch and maintenance being the main focus. The most recent MOT certificate was issued in 1986, were the current mileage suggests it has only travelled a few miles since then.

Also included in the file of paperwork is the original issue service booklet and owner manual. A parts book, workshop manuals, club correspondence and newsletters are also included. It comes with a few spare parts, including its original 3-dial centre console mounting with two dials, an exhaust and a body panel. It is a Road Tax and MOT-exempt and comes with a cluster of keys.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment of the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

    Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price a seller is willing to accept for their vehicle. We work closely with sellers to set realistic reserves that reflect current market values — we don’t take on vehicles with inflated or unrealistic expectations.

If the reserve isn’t met when the auction ends, we’ll work with the highest bidder to try and agree a deal with the seller.

Whether the reserve has been met may / may not be disclosed during the auction — just like a traditional auction house. Bidders usually find out if they’ve won only when the auction ends.

    As a guide:
    – If you’re able to place a second bid, the reserve hasn’t been met.
    – If you attempt to outbid yourself and the system blocks it, then the reserve has been met.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.
