Introduction

Glyn Parry
Professional Consigner

One of the rarest and finest examples of the iconic four-seater coupe that's come to auction in recent years.

When first unleashed in 1969, the Capri almost obliterated the British sports car market in one remarkable stroke. It was sold with multiple options, specs and engines, with the Ford Capri 3000 E billed as the top luxury model. It featured a power bonnet bulge, twin-exhaust outlets and wider wheels in a plush cabin. It was quite a short-lived model, it was replaced by the GXL in 1972, but retains its importance as the best Capri money could buy at the time.

Originally owned by a Ford sales director, this top of the range 1971 Capri 3000 E was bought new as a special order. The car has been converted to a modified mechanical specification by Broadspeed, while the interior was treated to bespoke white leather seats and a full-length Webasto sunroof. Just for good measure, the wheels arches were specially flared to complete the look. The car is well known in Ford Capri circles and has been subject to several magazine articles.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting Mark the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I've basked in the honour of this unique car for a while but now it's time to pass the glory on!

Mark comes from a car racing background, so was instantly attracted to the Broadspeed Capri when it came up for sale. It's originality and careful ownership profile, along with the previous owner's extensive research into its heritage gave Mark the confidence that this was the car for him. It has seen several car shows in recent years, but the lack of use, sat in his garage means Mark is keen to find a new owner for this rare car.

Exterior

Completely original down to the metal, this Broadspeed car is really something very special indeed.

Wheels and Tyres

The Kumho Power Max tyres are in excellent condition, while they're over 10 years old, they haven't seen much in terms of tarmac.

The original magnesium Minilite wheels can only be described as perfect.

Bodywork

The metalwork is in excellent condition, with no signs of dents or damage. The documentation suggests that the car has not seen any welding in its past. The panel gaps are even throughout. The underside is very solid, with no signs of corrosion at all. The engine bay and floor pan are very clean too. The undersides of the boot and bonnet look rust-free, and the doors open and close with no issues and again in remarkable condition.

The flared wheel arches are unique to this car and are part of the cars original spec, having been flared by a specialist when new. The front and rear spoiler were not specified when new, but have been retrofitted since - most likely at some point during the '80s.

Paint

The paint has been very well applied, with no issues with the finish. The lustre is of a high standard. There are no significant chips or paint blemishes, which correlates with the cars pampered storage and exceptional care.

Glass and Trim

The glass is in very good condition, with no chips or any damage. The chrome trim and bumpers are excellent, with just the odd sign of age here and there.

The canvas full-length webasto was fitted from new and has benefited from a recent replacement.

Interior

Beautifully presented, the only thing you need to consider is which 8-track cartridge you'd like to buy.

Seats and Carpets

The Ford Motor Company special order interior is showcased by the immaculate white leather seats. They are unmarked with no signs of use. The door cards are also in a similarly exceptional condition. The carpets are like new with nothing to suggest water leaks or abuse.

Dashboard

The dashboard is free from any cracks and has been very well preserved. The switchgear and controls are in very good condition too, with no evidence of wear.

The 8-track player is a nice touch and all of the electrical items are said to be functional. The car comes with aftermarket period rear parcel shelf speakers.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The Moto-Lita steering wheel and gear stick, like the whole presentation of the car really betrays its 50 years, and are in tip-top order with no suggestions of wear.

Mechanics

With genuine Broadspeed pedigree, this Capri is quite possibly one of the very best and most desirable MK1's in the country.

Engine and Gearbox

A core element to the originality and provenance of this car is the engine, and it will come as no surprise that it is in exceptional working order. The engine has been verified as a Broadspeed modified engine.

The cold start was fault free and the car soon settled down and ran well. No issues with the temperature or any awkward noises coming from the well-presented engine bay.

Suspension and Brakes

The running gear is in excellent condition, the suspension and brakes are both original modified items and are in good working order.

The Drive

The Capri has come a long way with decent / well-cared for and documented cars becoming very sought after. The 3000 V6 models have a slightly untamed character but offer everything you need in a sports car. The mechanics have been maintained to a high standard but you simply will not want to drive this car in anger. It really is that good.

Electrics and Other

Electrically the car is well up to scratch- Mark assures us that everything is fully functional and in good order.

History and Paperwork

Subject to a ground-up restoration in 2004, this car also comes with a fascinating amount of info that covers all of its previous owners.

The car was subject to a thorough restoration in 2004, with a detailed and well-presented folder that not only covers the restoration but shows the diligence of the owner to track down all of the car previous keepers and document their timeframe of ownership.

This documentation and detective work covers investigating the car's history throughout its 50 years. All full list of the renewed and replaced items during the restoration can also be viewed in the paper section, the majority of work seems to be focused on the engine and running gear.

The car has had an MOT every year regardless of use and naturally comes all ready for the show season.

We've actioned our usual checks on this car; Seller ID, V5C, HPi check.
