Introduction

Kulraj Singh Salh
COO

Ford Sierra, but cooler and quicker; enter the Ford Sierra RS Cosworth. One of the most successful touring cars ever made, the homologated version winning a number of touring championships, this is a proper '80s legend.

When Cosworth got their hands on the Ford Sierra, they produced something really special, a British '80s poster car. The "Cossies" were built for the track, the purpose of this project was to produce a racing legend, they succeed producing a winner for multiple touring race series.

This particular example coming from a private collection of sports cars is very special in our eyes; one of the lowest mileage RS Cosworth's available, coming to sale out of 10 years ownership, a low mileage example with only ~13,000 on the clock, known history and provenance back to the original owner... and we haven't even talked about the condition yet.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Kulraj after meeting Colin the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

The Sierra RS Cosworth has always been a favourite of mine, driving it makes you feel 21 again.

A car collector, Colin has a range of performance cars from "Fast Fords" through to "RS Audi's". Cosworth engined Ford's have definitely played a big part in the collection, and this low mileage example is no different.

Colin has known the original owner of this car for some time, and when the opportunity came to acquire the car from him, he didn't have to think twice about taking the offer. Colin has kept this car in a museum like condition, keeping the car dry stored correctly and out of harmful light etc, the condition today speaks volume about the care this car has had over the years.

GET YOUR VALUATION

Exterior

A true iconic '80s masterpiece; that rear spoiler, the RS wheels and that sporty front end, a real head turner.

Wheels and Tyres

The original 15" Ford Sierra RS Cosworth alloys on this example are wrapped in Dunlop SP Sport D40's.

The tyres look to be in very good condition and the same for the wheels too, they look amazing with the Ford badge looking like new across all 4 tyres. The spare wheel tells the same story too. Take a look through the photos and videos.

Bodywork

After extensive testing and development, the Sierra RS Cosworth was given a large rear wing, which helps the car retain ground contact. This 'Cossie' was also given a front grill opening to feed air to the intercooler and wheel arch extensions to house the wider racing wheels.

We didn't notice any imperfections in the bodywork when we captured the car, a very lovely example indeed. Looking over all the panels, leading edges etc, no sign of any corrosion either. Take a look at the extensive video and photo review to see the detail.

Paint

To keep the cost down, Ford released the car with only 3 colour options: Black, White or Moonstone Blue like this example.

The paint on this car is excellent, even in finish and colour across all the panels. It's clearly been well cared for over the years, we didn't notice any marks at all, take a look at the video review.

Glass and Trim

Flared wheel arches, rear spoiler, air-intake/vents in the bonnet, custom trim for the RS Cosworth. The original owner missed out on the opportunity to buy an RS500, and so installed the extra lower boot spoiler and RS500 decal on the rear of the car themselves.

All the trim looks in as good condition at the rest of the exterior, in line with the low mileage the car has covered. The headlights are free from any signs of fogging and discolouration, and the glass looks excellent too. The only imperfection we could find was on corners of the windscreen laminate as pictured.

Interior

The retro cockpit still looks good to this day; Recaro sport seats and three-spoke steering wheel puts the driver in comfortable control of this racing legend.

Seats and Carpets

Nothing less than original Recaro sports seats in this example. The condition is amazing, most examples will show wear/sagging on the drivers seat bolster, not on this low mileage example.

Please take a look at the 'Interior Review' video to see all the details.

Dashboard

Classic '80s, boxy and no-fuss dashboard, every control and switch has it's purpose while being directly in the drivers reach.

Everything presents in very good condition, in line with the cars mileage and age, take a look at the video review to see the detail.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Original steering wheel and gearstick, just driving focused, putting you in complete control of this turbo powered rocket.

Both present in very good condition, no defects visible, just what you'd expect for an example like this. Watch the video review for a closer look.

Mechanics

A +200BHP masterpiece from Cosworth, this drivetrain powered Cosworth and Ford further into the hearts and minds of the UK public.

Engine and Gearbox

The powertrain behind this iconic 'Cossie' is the Cosworth YBB. When Ford went to Cosworth with the request for an engine that would win races, they duly accepted so long as the road going versions like this one produced over 200BHP.

A special five speed gearbox made by Borg-Warner was chosen, to cope with the high revving nature of this car. Please watch our 'Start-Up' video above to see the car starting with no issues.

The previous owners made some typical upgrades to this car, fitting it with a modified air-intake system to help push power through. Importantly, as pictured, the car comes with the original air-box allowing the new owner put this back to stock if they so wish.

Suspension and Brakes

Cosworth learned from it's racing bloodline and took the standard Sierra suspension and brakes setup, and replaced with something a little more suitable - sport suspension and larger brake discs were welcomed.

Take a look at the underside photographs and video to see the condition of the suspension, a very clean underside as you'd expect given the mileage.

The Drive

The Ford Sierra RS Cosworth was born to race, a track-tuned engine, sports suspension, and aerodynamic gains - this was cutting edge for the '80s and still an absolute pleasure to drive today.

Electrics and Other

Back to the essentials in this racing car. To keep this car lightweight and costs down the Sierra RS Cosworth came with two equipment options without or with central locking and electric window lifts.

Of course, this lovely example comes with the latter and Colin reports everything is working as it should. Please view the images to see these features in more detail.

History and Paperwork

A very low mileage and low ownership example, with known provenance and paperwork; the perfect example for any classic collector.

This fine example is not short on service history, a stamped up service book and MOTs to back up the low mileage. As mentioned, in Colin's ownership the car has been somewhat of a museum piece, and in the last 10 years has not covered many miles at all (just the odd run on private roads to ensure the drivetrain etc stay lubricated).

The car has had a tasteful mongoose exhaust with 4" tail fitted and an aftermarket air-intake system to improve performance. Importantly original the owner has kept the original air-box which will be included in the sale of the car.

The car has been regularly serviced and MOTd, you can tell from the photos how meticulous the owners have been in keeping this car.

A very well kept model with low mileage and ownership - get bidding and don't let this rare example get away from you.

Hi, why is there an elaborate three way device attached to the top of the rocker cover? This isn’t a standard fit device on these cars. Has there been gasket issues? Thank you.
