Introduction

Glyn Parry
Professional Consigner

Modern lines, turbocharged power, and a legacy that still echoes through motoring history, this automotive gem captured the imaginations of petrolheads worldwide.

The Ford Sierra RS Cosworth Sapphire 4X4 follows on from its motorsport-bred predecessor, retaining much of the same feel albeit with subtly tweaked handling traits of the original. Packaged in a more practical, stiffer, and manageable car, the Sierra Sapphire was rolled out in 1988 with well-weighted steering and an excellent balance of agility and stability.

The Sierra Sapphire makes for a genuinely engaging drive and was designed to win races, with its turbocharged 2.0L 16-valve engine producing around ~200 BHP, driving all four wheels via a five-speed manual transmission. Thanks to its 4x4 capability, four-wheel drive gives great functionality to the Cosworth.

This 1993 example is an exciting opportunity for fast Ford fans to own a clean, largely original RS Cosworth, and cars like these don't come up often. Equipped with Recaro leather seats and a trip computer, which made it a standout car in its day. A defining feature of this car is the large amount of restorative work carried out around 2014 to 2015, bringing it up to a really impressive standard.

This listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting Andrew the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Owning a Sierra RS Cosworth is like possessing a rare, high-octane piece of automotive history - it's more than just a car, it's a passion.

The Sierra Sapphire is being offered for sale by owner Andrew. He hasn't owned the car for very long, but the motoring excitement he's experienced with the car has made him second-guess letting go, saying, "I've had my fair share of great cars over the years, but this one is up there with some of the greats".

With an extensive amount of restoration carried out on the Ford around 2014, the car's condition is truly remarkable. Andrew added, "when I first bought the car and looked it over, I was so impressed with the quality of it. The car comes with many pictures of the restoration works being carried out as well".

The car has only been in the current owner's hands for a short amount of time, but with an upcoming house move and no storage at the new house for the Cosworth, Andrew has decided to sell the car with us. Andrew said, "when I take ownership of a new car, I often like to drive it a little to enjoy it before I use it. This one has kept my attention for a few months now, and I almost don't want to let it go".

Andrew is moving house and has no storage available for the Cosworth at the new house so has decided to sell the car with us.

Should you have any questions, Andrew would be happy to answer them in the questions section below.

Exterior

With a design that's both timeless and striking, this iconic gem is bold and aggressive with its spoiler, large exhaust and sporty looks.

Wheels and Tyres

The Sierra 15" lattice wheels look great at all four corners. We noted no concerning signs of curbing or significant signs of damage - they presented well and would just benefit from a good clean, but otherwise, not a concern.

The wheels are fitted with Bridgestone Potenza tyres, which appear to be in great condition on all four tyres. The tread specification was noted as 205/50 across all four corners, and tread depth looked good, but being date coded from 2015, it may be a consideration for the future owner to upgrade these at a later date.

For a more detailed view of the exterior of the RS Cosworth and a closer inspection of the wheels and tyres, please refer to the photos and videos.

Bodywork

The car maintains well-aligned shut lines, and we couldn't spot any visible panel distortions. Both doors, boot, and bonnet open and close smoothly, and nothing stood out as a real concern for us when looking over the car.

During our visit, we didn't come across any significant dents on the car, and no major concerns were noted when we looked over the exterior. Overall, a great-looking example of a decent Cosworth.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take the time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in a smart Smokestone Blue/Grey tone, the colour and finish were consistent across the entire car, and we didn't note any major concerns with coverage or markings to the paintwork.

Overall, the paintwork presented really well and showed a great colour shift in the light, changing from a dark shade in the shadow to a blue tone in the light.

We only noted two minor paint issues: one was a very small stone chip on the nearside rear quarter, and the other was a paint bubble next to the sunroof edge, again very minimal.

Once again, we have taken high-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork and paint for yourselves. The images are taken from various angles to showcase the car as you would see it if you were standing there. Please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car to form your own opinion about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

All the glass sections on the windows, mirrors, and lenses of the Sierra appeared in great condition. We didn't observe any cracks, chips, or significant scratching on these sections during our visit. The only item we noted was a small stone chip to the windscreen, but it's not a real concern.

The window seals look great too and are in line with the rest of the condition of the car. We also noted the condition of the trim to be in great condition, with no significant damage or wear present throughout.

We did note that the interior headlining was just sagging slightly to the rear.

The lights, both at the front and rear of the car, appeared to be in great condition, consistent with the overall presentation of the vehicle. A nice touch to the headlights was the protective covers fitted.

Interior

The cabin area here is a portal to the heart of the '90s, where style, technology, and performance meet in perfect harmony.

Seats and Carpets

The smart black leather Recaro seats are in a really presentable condition, providing a great level of comfort and support. A great finishing touch to the seats is the embossed Recaro branding in the center section. The rear seat section appeared to be in lovely condition also, with hardly a mark in this area.

There are only slight signs of age on the seats in terms of the expected creasing to the leather that comes with age.

Ford rubber matting is in place in the footwells; these sections are designed to be more heavy-duty than the standard matting. Although wear is minimal here, the mats would benefit from a cleanup. The front Ford cabin carpets are in good condition, although they could benefit from a clean over. Rear carpet sections looked good in the back of the car.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Dashboard

The black dash appears in great condition, and the top of the dashboard showed no major issues. The '90s style is everywhere here, simple, efficient, and designed with the driver in mind. The odometer displayed approximately 115,919 miles on the clock at the time of our visit.

The dials, switches, and controls are well maintained; all the surfaces appear clean and clear, with no fogging or scratching. We did not observe any issues with warning lights when starting the car from cold or during our road assessment. You may notice the driver's door light on during our on-the-road video; this was due to the door being slightly ajar but was not a noted issue.

Our interior gallery section takes you through some closer images of the RS Cosworth's dashboard. Head over and see the car's interior in finer detail.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original steering wheel is in very good condition with only a minor mark on the edge. Overall, we didn't find any real concerns when looking over the interior.

The manual gear stick was in good condition too. We did note that when selecting first or reverse gear, the gaiter edge popped out slightly, although it's likely it would just need to be clipped back in. We've captured high-resolution photos for you to review and appreciate the condition of the interior in our gallery section.

Mechanics

Powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder Cosworth 2.0L engine, the Sierra is capable of a 0-60 in ~5.8 seconds bringing a well planted feel and an engaging driving experience.

Engine and Gearbox

The front-engine, all-wheel-drive, Cosworth YBB 1993cc engine, for its time, was a state-of-the-art power plant. Fitted with a DOHC 16-valve cylinder head, a Garrett T03 turbocharger, Weber-Marelli engine management system, and forged pistons, it produced ~204 BHP, making it a quick car that performed smoothly on the road.

We started the car from cold with no issues, and it performed well on the road. The engine pulled nicely, idled smoothly, and ran without fault.

The transmission was responsive, and the clutch functioned without concern. We took the car on some local roads to gain a better understanding of what this vehicle offers. During the drive, we went through the motions, reviewed the electrical elements in the interior of the Cosworth, and received an overview from John, our driver for the review video's perspective, on the car's performance.

Suspension and Brakes

On the drive, we didn't detect any significant knocks, bangs, or squeaks from the suspension. Overall, the car performed as anticipated without any observed issues.

The brakes on the Sierra Sapphire felt great, with no noticeable pulling or vibrations during the journey, allowing the car to come to a stop smoothly, meeting our expectations.

We cover the underside of the RS Cosworth in our 'Mechanical gallery' section, which showed in great condition. Head over to our video section where we've summarized our visit in more detail for you to view for yourself. We take you around the mechanical elements of the car and give you an overview of what's on offer here.

The Drive

An extremely enjoyable and fast drive is offered in this Sierra RS Sapphire Cosworth 4X4. With its precise steering and tuned suspension, the vehicle maneuvers well through corners, displaying agility that combines both engagement and effortless power.

The combination of a well-balanced chassis and a powerful engine creates a driving experience that's both exhilarating on the open road and remarkably capable in daily use. It's a true driving enthusiast's dream come to life.

Electrics and Other

On our visit, we observed that the rev counter, temperature, and fuel gauge, as well as the speedometer, were all functioning without any issues. A nice touch was the four-button setup on the driver's side controlling lighting and the heated windscreen.

The Sierra Sapphire is equipped with electric windows in the front and back, a Ford Sound head unit and cassette player, a Ford amplifier unit, heater unit, digital clock, and digital vehicle overview.

We noted that the clip section in the center storage console was missing.

We observed no issues with the electrical elements of the car, and from our observations, everything was working correctly.

History and Paperwork

With a great amount of restorative work in 2014 and an advisory free MOT earlier this year, makes this car worth a good look.

Take a look at this history and paperwork media to review the previous MOT reports, servicing, and parts that this Sierra RS Cosworth Sapphire 4x4 has received over its lifetime.

A notable feature of this car is the original driver handbook, complete with service books, owner's handbook, original security booklet, audio guide, and repair guide. Two sets of keys are included with the Cosworth as well.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

Should any questions be required, Andrew would be happy to answer these in the 'ask the owner' section.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
