Seen as one of the greatest cars Honda has ever made, the S2000 is a modern classic that you'll want to own.

The S2000 has all the ingredients of an exceptional sports car, a perfect 50:50 weight distribution from the front-mounted engine, rear-wheel drive set-up, with only 2 seats. The Honda S2000 was first introduced in 1999 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Honda and was produced for 10 years - during that time only 8,000 came to the UK.

The car was given the chassis designation AP1 and featured a bulletproof 1,997cc inline four-cylinder DOHC-VTEC engine. The F-series engine in the S2000 held the crown for the highest specific output of a naturally aspirated engine for 10 years, only being dethroned with the launch of the Ferrari 458. The output was thanks to the 11.7:1 compression ration, roller rocker valvetrain, variable valve timing (VVT), and impressive 1.82:1 rod-to-stoke ratio that let the 2L engine hit 9,000 rpm.

There is no doubt the S2000 is cementing its name in the history books of one of the all time greats and prices are really on the move. This S2000 is a real head-turner due to the New Formula Red paintwork, one of the rarer colours offered by Honda for the S2000. Covering ~104,600 miles over the last 22 years, this example has been used and loved by 6 previous owners, and comes to market from ~14 year ownership.

Meet the owner

We’ve owned this car for fourteen years now, and we loved every minute we were on the road - both as drivers and passengers!

Gill and John have owned the car since 2008, covering ~20,000 miles in that time, but they loved each and every mile behind the wheel. “We were originally attracted to the style and drive of the car, and that coupled with Honda’s reliability made it a no brainer for us to buy it” they told us.

Gill and John love the convertible aspect of the S2000, allowing them to enjoy the Blackpool sun with the roof down, while listening to the beautiful sound of the naturally aspirated 2-litre engine. They conclude “As well as the looks and performance, we love the comfort and sense of power under the bonnet”.

They report that they have replaced the hood, and the side strips of the seats have also been replaced due to wear. They bought the car as a keeper, however unfortunately they have had to make the tough decision to part ways with it due to Johns health circumstances in the past year. Exterior

With its unmistakeable styling that has matured with age, and finished in New Formula Red, this S2000 looks stunning.

Wheels and Tyres

The 16” 5-spoke alloys appear in great condition, with minimal signs of age or road use.

Goodyear Eagle F1s wrap the front wheels, with Goodyear Efficient Grips the choice of tyre for the rear - both sets appear to have good tread remaining.

Bodywork

Other than the hood as mentioned earlier, the body work is understood to be all original and appears in great condition with no major wear spotted on our visit.

Paint

New Formula Red is a rare colour for this model, with only ~9,500 S2000s bearing this colour worldwide. On this particular example, the condition of the paint looks great across the car, and no obvious marks were spotted on our visit, so please look through the photos and videos to see this stunning paint for yourself.

Glass and Trim

During our visit we inspected the glass and trim and did not notice any visible cracks. The trim around the windscreen seems to be in good condition too. The headlight and tail light housing remain clear, with no visible signs of clouding present.

Interior

With the performance-focused position of the seats, it’s clear that this car means business and is all about the driving experience.

Seats and Carpets

The leather sports seats in the S2000 hug your body while going round corners, and the condition of these seats appear to be very good for their age and mileage. Gill and John mentioned that they've had the bolsters repaired in the past.

Carpets also appear in great condition, thank to protective floor mats. Please check the galleries to gain a better understanding of the condition.

Dashboard

Similar to its exterior styling, the dashboard of the S2000 looks to have not aged at all, with a futuristic look to it. The digital rev counter and the start stop button giving the car that little bit extra, and Gill and John report that everything works as it should do to their knowledge.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel appears in good condition considering the amount of miles driven, with only a few marks on the top.

The alloy gear stick contrasts beautifully with the black interior, and only shows minimal signs of wear on the left side. Please watch the Interior video and browse the gallery for a better view of this.

Mechanics

The combination of the high revving engine, 6-speed gearbox and the rigid body structure makes the S2000 an exhilarating drive.

Engine and Gearbox

The S2000’s crown jewel is definitely its engine. The 2.0-litre naturally aspirated engine produces a staggering 237BHP at 8300RPM, while redlining at 8900RPM! At the time of production in 1999, the only competitor for the amount of revs produced was the 3.6-litre V8 in the Ferrari 360, and this only redlined at 8500RPM. As seen in the "Cold Start" part of the video, the engine sprung to life almost instantly when Gill pressed the red start button.

Married to the 2.0-litre engine block is one of the best six-speed gearboxes ever created. With just 40mm travel from left to right across three open gates all while being incredibly robust - this makes the S2000 incredibly fun to drive.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension is a double-wishbone setup all around. Gill and John report that the suspension and brakes work well, mentioning a firm and sporty ride with stopping on-demand performance.

The Drive

The S2000 is loved across the petrolhead community, situating itself as a firm favourite for those who love their cars. You really need to drive one yourself to understand the pure joy that this car brings. Once at 6,000rpm, the valves open and that’s when the exhaust starts screaming at you until it reaches 9,000rpm, before you shift it into the next gear and do it all over again! Gill and John tell us it is very comfortable to drive as well, with it being incredibly smooth in any driving conditions.

Adam, our CEO here at Trade Classics bought one back in 2004, brand new, he had it for three years and clocked up a colossal 93,000 miles. Adam said it never missed a beat and it was the best car he's ever owned - he's also a 911 guy too!

Electrics and Other

The car features a red start button, making you feel like you're controlling a fighter jet! As seen in the "Mechanical Review" video, the roof goes up and down at ease, and Gill and John tell us the rest of the electronic features are working as they should to their knowledge.

History and Paperwork

Coming to market from ~14 year ownership, 5 former keepers and a decent service history to chart the cars life, in striking red over black colourway, we think this S2000 is well worth time and careful consideration.

As seen from the paperwork photos below, this S2000 has been well looked after, with clean MOT results and invoices for every bit of work completed. As mentioned previously, the hood has been replaced but you wouldn’t be able to notice this unless you look incredibly hard due to the quality of the job. The replaced side strips of the seats are the same - they flow perfectly with the rest of the interior and are hardly noticeable. Gill and John would be happy to answer any questions regarding the changes done on this car.
