Introduction

Alan Stuart
Professional Consigner

Elegance, class, and stacks of history, this restored Mk2 Jaguar has everything you'd ever want.

The Jaguar MK1 was a huge success, and the MK2 built on that. A larger 3.4L or 3.8L engine option was now offered, with a luxurious cabin and serious performance on the track, no other saloon came close to matching what Jaguar created.

With performance to rival the E-Type, the MK2 became synonymous with getaway drivers of the 60s, the 3.4L smaller engine being chosen too as a sweet spot with performance still there for a speedy exit. Arguably the first super saloon, most examples focus on the luxury the cars offer like this example, but you'll still see Mk2's involved in historic racing to this day.

This example is coming to market from ~7.5 years of ownership, with 7 former keepers and importantly a fully documented history to corroborate the ~88,000 miles. A UK supplied RHD, it is lucky to have had careful ownership over the past 59 years, and more recently has had a complete overhaul of the mechanics and an expert interior refurbishment to bring the car to an excellent level, you will not be disappointed with this beautiful Mk2. Recently serviced, it's ready for the new owner to enjoy.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Alan after meeting Simon the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I searched up and down the country for the right Mk2, I've enjoyed both using and restoring it over the years.

Simon purchased the car back in 2014, some important factors that influenced the purchase was the fully documented history, matching numbers and excellent condition of the bodywork.

Having driven the car back from Wales where he bought it from, he set about taking it to the next level and commissioned a full mechanical overhaul on the car. This included an engine rebuild, along with gearbox and back axle, and the braking system was upgraded too. He's also had the interior refurbished from top to bottom as you'll see in the history file, it now looks stunning. He will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have in the comments below.

Exterior

Arguably the first popular super saloon, finished in bronze with period brightwork, this car looks stunning.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with new chromed wire wheels, this car really does look the part, straight from the swinging sixties. As the wheels are fairly new, they present in excellent condition, with great signs of care since the restoration.

Also fitted with Retro Classic RC-001 tyres all round. The tread on these tyres look to be in excellent condition with lots of life left in them.

Bodywork

Make sure you take a good look at this car, what a beautiful example. The panel fit and condition are of a very high standard with even and equal panel gaps throughout, this is testament to the care of the current and previous owner. Both have kept the car in humidity controlled environments, and kept the car out of bad weather in the UK.

Simon reports all doors open and close without problems, the underside appears solid, with the chassis rails and jacking points in good condition. The previous owner had the car for around 30 years, and carried out a back to metal restoration on the bodywork, the quality of the work and the care of ownership showing to the this day.

Paint

The car was resprayed in its original Bronze factory colour as part of the bodywork restoration by the previous owner. Careful ownership and storage of the car means the paint still looks great to this day. A deep shine and lustre which is even across the car.

With the exterior respray having been carried out some time ago, there are some small age related marks like a few stone-chips to the front, and some small marks on leading edges on the panels. Please view each panel in great detail in the extensive videos and photos below.

Glass and Trim

The glass looks in excellent condition across the car, along with the trim.

All the window rubbers and seals appear tight with no major signs of wear or degrading, the chrome looks great across the whole of the exterior.

Interior

The interior has been treated to a bare metal refit, offering very comfortable seats finished in the finest leather that will only get better with age.

Seats and Carpets

Simon has gone to town inside this MK2 cabin, when you sit inside, you'll feel like you're in 1962 and you've just driven this Jag off the forecourt.

The tan seats are in excellent re-upholstered condition along with the door cards, carpets, and headlining, all items that have been renewed, even the sun visors. A great amount of attention to detail has gone into this refit. Everything looks tight and fitted correctly, a very prim and proper job.

The carpets also have over mats present, to really maintain this luxurious interior. Please take a look at the images and videos for a more detailed view of the inside of this car.

Dashboard

Featuring a beautiful walnut dash, with the original dials and black leather surrounds. As you would expect, the dashboard is in great condition, with a high shine from the gloss finish.

The dials, controls and switches are in good condition and all are said to be functional apart from the clock not telling the time correctly.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

In line with the rest of the interior, the steering wheel and gear stick are in great condition, showing very little signs of wear, the gearstick gator having been reupholstered along with the rest of the centre console.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed tour of this interior.

Mechanics

A complete rebuild and overhaul of the mechanics on this car should mean another 59 years of motoring ahead.

Engine and Gearbox

Fitted with Jaguar's finest, the XK engine block in 3.4L straight-six format. A very quick and robust engine, exactly what you'd want in a usable classic like this.

Simon has had the engine, gearbox, and rear axle rebuilt. All the numbers are matching from the Jaguar hertitage certificate. Please watch our "Cold Start" video above to see the car starting with no issues. The car is fitted with a manual gearbox with overdrive from factory. Simon has added some practicality to the car, it's now running on electronic ignition. View the history file to see the pictures of the engine totally stripped down and refurbished. As part of the work, the car was also converted to run on unleaded fuel, and it's just had an annual oil service actioned.

Suspension and Brakes

Simon assures us the car handles exactly as you'd expect for a Jaguar Mk2 in this condition, excellently. He says it stops just as it should do too.

The cars suspension has also been renewed as part of the restoration Simon actioned, the braking system has been upgraded, now fitted with 4-pot Cooper calipers and discs on the front and rear.

Please view the mechanical images to have a closer look at the clean underside, suspension, and brakes of this car.

The Drive

The MKII has a reputation for being fast and offers a very smooth ride with plenty of cabin space. Simon mentions to us it's a very enjoyable car to drive and is the very essence of a British sporting saloon.

Electrics and Other

The car is fitted with a classic Motorola radio inside which fits so well inside this recently refurbished cabin. The car also comes with power steering, as well as electronic ignition being fitted.

Simon reports that all electrics are working as expected to his knowledge, the only exceptions being that the clock doesn't keep time correctly, and the automatic cancel function on the turning indicators doesn't always catch. The car comes with its original toolkit in the boot, a lovely touch to see all these years on.

History and Paperwork

This car has everything you'd want in an MK2; fully restored to a very high standard, UK RHD, stacks of documented chronological history backing up the current mileage figure.

Simon and the previous owners have clearly taken good care of the car having owned it for more than half of its life. The car comes with a documented history, including the original log book, along with lots of photos of the work carried out over Simon ownership. It even comes with the original toolkit.

He has had the engine, gearbox, rear axle, brake system, and a complete interior refit, along with power steering fitted. A matching numbers example, finished in the factory colours, take a look at the Jaguar heritage certificate of authenticity in the history file.

We've actioned checks on; Seller ID, V5, HPi clear.

Hello Simon, why are so many areas of the receipts
blanked off and what is leaking near the steering rack?
Thank you

Kulraj Salh

Hi nez70,

I’ll leave Simon to answer the question on what you’re observing with regards the steering, but to answer the question on paperwork, we blank out the personal information of the current and previous owners before we publish the history file of a car we are auctioning to secure personal information.
