Introduction

Jacob Boodrie
Professional Consigner

Covered headlights, Opalescent Silver Grey, rear lights above the bumper, polished cam covers and toggle switches - a proper S1 E-Type.

We all know this car as one of the most iconic cars ever made, the E-Type is just stunning in every way, and this example is no different. The current owner for the last 20 years, Andy, commissioned a full nut and bolt restoration on the car back in 2005 in his own workshop with the help of world experts in Jaguar classics projects, leaving this beautiful 2+2 in immaculate condition.

Andy built this car to the spec he was longing for, and the result is an excellent, drivable and reliable E-Type.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Jacob after meeting Andy the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

After owning the car for 3 years I decided to get every nut and bolt replaced, and the car built to my spec - it was a true labour of love.

Andy purchased the E-Type in the year 2000 and used it for around 3 years. The condition was fair but a little bit tired, so the decision was made to carry out a full restoration. Everything was stripped right down from the engine, gearbox, and rear differential to be rebuilt. A bare metal restoration was also commissioned. The bonnet, rear quarters, all the floorpans, boot floor, sides, doors, 'A' posts were replaced with new parts and the whole shell was treated to ensure the car stays rust free - these are complicated cars and not an easy project at all.

Andy has spent hundreds of hours on the car and his meticulous nature and attention to detail shines through in every corner of the car. Even though the restoration was completed some time ago, it still looks amazing today. Now, with a lack of use over the past year, Andy has made the difficult decision to sell. It was so difficult that we've been speaking to Andy for a long time now and given him impartial advice.

Exterior

A beautifully restored example with an excellent finish and stunning chrome work; undeniable class.

Wheels and Tyres

Excellent condition wire wheels are fitted with beautiful knockoff caps, as can been seen in the photos and images.

The tyres are General Ameri on the rears, and Maxxis Victra on the front, both look like they have plenty of tread and life in them for many miles to come.

Bodywork

This is a 2+2 body and sure the FHC is worth more money, but we think you get the best of best worlds with this E-Type; a car you can actually get in and out of easily, drive long distances in comfort and enjoy the gorgeous looks of a proper series one.

Lots of replacement panels were fitted during the restoration, most notably the bonnet, rear quarters, floors, and 'A' pillars. All panels were supplied by world-renowned and trusted Martin Robey - Andy spent a significant amount of money on parts during the time of restoration.

Please study the photos and videos of this very special E-Type - you will see the body is in really excellent condition. The shut lines are always a big headache when completing an E-Type restoration, but Andy has pulled it off and it actually looks better than factory.

Condition wise, we noticed a small blemish on the rear wing near the passenger door, what appears to be a small area of bubbling under the paint.

The underside of the car looks in excellent condition, take a look at the video review for the details.

Paint

The grey paint is in excellent condition with some very minor areas that the new owner could address if they wished. There is a section of paint that could do with remediation along the shut line of the O/S edge of the bonnet and the font has some minor stone chips in line with the mileage since restoration. We are just being extra picky as remember this car is 54 years old together with a 20 years ago restoration.

Please review all the high-quality photos for yourself to see every angle of the exterior of this stunning restoration.

Glass and Trim

Both in excellent condition with some very slight wear on parts of the rubber, however, no compromise in terms of being waterproof.

All glass was replaced during the restoration - showing the lengths Andy went to in order to get this car in simply stunning condition.

Interior

WOW - what a place to be. Andy completely refurbished the interior and used the skills of professionals at BAS International - the result is the best of the best.

Seats and Carpets

Looking in excellent condition, the red leather seats beautifully contrasting with the grey exterior. Insulating materials are situated underneath the carpets and we saw no signs of rust or corrosion on our visit.

The seats are really lovely and finished off beautifully by excellent seat belts with the trademark leaping car embossed.

Dashboard

The S1 dashboard is arguably one of the finest dashboard designs of all time. It's instantly recognisable with everything laid out exactly where you want it. And with this being a S1 you get those all important and very stylish toggle switches.

All in excellent condition with some age-related marks - please see the photos and videos.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A new steering wheel was fitted during the restoration from an interior Jaguar specialist. However, it's a beautiful thin rim - so many restorations we see have modern replacement wheels that really take away the originality of the car.

As part of the sale, the original wheel is included and is in a fair but tired condition.

Mechanics

Andy has put his heart and soul in to restoring this stunning E-Type - a true legacy.

Engine and Gearbox

During the two years restoring the vehicle, the engine had been rebuilt to a very high professional standard. 15 years on the engine bay still looks immaculate having covered fewer miles more recently and has been stored correctly.

The 4.2L started up first time in the garage in our video and soon moved into a smooth tick over. An electric ignition system has been fitted for improved reliability whilst SS valves were added to support the use of unleaded fuel.

Andy has fitted a very subtle LPG system that now impressively returns the car between 40-50 mpg - this car is perfectly set up for crossing long distances in style at very little cost. The system has been fitted very sympathetically with the tank just taking up the old space used by the spare wheel, and the injectors fitted beautifully to the intake with black rubber / fixings. The filling point is ingeniously located behind the rear number plate and everything looks like it could have been factory fitted to us, a really top job Andy. Andy only uses LPG on long journeys and sticks to petrol around town and smaller trips.

The automatic gearbox was also taken out and reconditioned, with some parts being replaced. Please take a look at the videos to see the engine start from cold.

Suspension and Brakes

New vented Coopercraft disc brakes and four-pot calipers were added to the car with new ancillaries. The suspension has also been extensively reconditioned to bring it in line with the condition of the rest of the car.

We are assured by Andy that the E-Type offers no unwanted noises from these areas when driving the car over mixed surfaces.

The Drive

What else is there to say about these cars? They are great to drive, one of the most stylish cars ever made, and they are also incredibly luxurious to sit in. Plus you get the benefits of a larger cabin / leg room in the 2+2 model.

Andy assures us although the car hasn't been as used much recently, he has serviced the car personally whenever it requires.

No issues with the temperature and oil pressure is rock solid settling down to circa 40psi when hot - this is because Andy has been fastidious with the engine rebuild.

Electrics and Other

We are assured by Andy everything on the car works as expected and has significantly increased the car's reliability and efficiency due to the electric ignition and LPG option.

History and Paperwork

A meticulous restoration was completed in 2005 that injected new life into this stunning Jaguar E-Type.

Andy has a whole folder of invoices, MOTs and certificates from his ownership of the car, including documents from previous owners. He is more than happy to answer any questions involving the care and maintenance of the car, as we were unable to capture this content upon our visit. Andy has taken a couple of sample photos of the most important documents and in there you'll see photos from shows and during the restoration.

It's great to see such a large and comprehensive history file, because as we know it's all about originality.

The odometer shows circa 11,000 miles - this was zeroed back in 2005 after the restoration - before that it was showing 76,000 miles.

Companies and groups used for parts and works during restoration:
Panels from Martin Robey;

Hi, Do you have any history on the first 40. Years of the car? Such as the Jaguar heritage certificate and if the vehicle was originally left hand drive?
