Introduction

Paul Wright
Professional Consigner

A cruiser or something to tackle the town in – the Mk2 Jaguar is more than your average saloon.

Created for the new age of long-distance motorway cruising, with the potential to traverse the continent with comfort and space, the Mk2 Jaguar established the company as one of the world's foremost manufacturers of sporting family cars. An elegant evolution from the original models, the introduction of the 1959 Mk2 utilised the advanced series of XK engines which powered the E-Types. Soon establishing itself as something of a literal everyman car, its race-track provenance continued to enhance Jaguar's reputation as the producer of finely tuned sporting cars.

Towards the end of the car's life, the specifications were mildly tuned down to reflect the more competitive pricing of the Mk2, but the character and virtues remained intact. The 3.4-litre with twin SU HD6 carburettors and manual overdrive gearboxes is often considered one of the more sought-after Mk2 versions. Producing a useful 210 bhp, these finely balanced cars still feel genuinely quick to drive.

This well-presented example comes to the market from a two-year ownership. The car received a body restoration by a previous keeper several years ago. Whilst in Chris the vendor’s ownership, it has been used very little other than the odd run out on a sunny day.

This listing was written from information supplied by Paul after meeting Richard the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

“I got the car to use regularly as an affordable luxury classic.”

Richard purchased the Jaguar a couple of years ago with a view to use the car regularly and even as a daily through the summer. With various work commitments and some hectic running about, the relaxed daily commute never happened, which meant the Jaguar has spent most of its time in storage throughout his ownership – which is the reason for the sale of the 60s classic.

Exterior

Finished in Golden Sand, the Mk2 Jag has great presence on the road.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with wire wheels, these are in good condition with just a light amount of tarnishing. The tyres are a matching set of Vredestein Sprint Classics and have plenty of tread remaining.

Please see the image gallery for more photographs.

image

Bodywork

Looking around the car, the Jaguar presents very well. The panel gaps appear to be equal and there were no dings or dents spotted when we visited the car.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

image

Paint

Finished in the stunning Golden Sand, the paintwork is in excellent order. There are no obvious chips to mention other than a couple of minor blemishes which have to be looked for.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there yourself. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

image

Glass and Trim

All windows are in good order for their age, with no excessive scratches or marks. The seals and chrome trims are all in good condition.

All of the lights are free from damage and the chrome work has a bright finish with just a very minor amount of tarnishing in a couple of areas.

image

Interior

The red leather is a classic look against the gold exterior and works perfectly.

Seats and Carpets

All of the interior appears to be original, therefore it does have some signs of patina to the leather in keeping with the age of the Jag, but it does add some nice character to it.

The red carpets are in good condition throughout the cabin, and in the boot the spare wheel is present along with a knock-off hammer.

image

Dashboard

the beautifully crafted wooden dashboard is in excellent condition, along with the fascia whihc has no splits or cracks to the lacquer. The instruments are said to be working correctly and the odometer shows a reading of ~66,231 miles.

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original steering wheel is in good order and doesn’t have signs of excessive wear or use for its age, and the same can be said for the four-speed gearknob.

image

Mechanics

A 3.4-litre inline-six is the perfect unit for the Mk2, offering a fine balance of performance and economy.

Engine and Gearbox

The 3.4-litre fires up without hesitation and runs super smoothly, with no issues reported by the vendor.

On the road, the Jag pulls well through the four-speed gearbox, which does have overdrive, there was also a new clutch fitted in 2010.

image

Suspension and Brakes

Out in the car, the Jaguar is a joy to be in; it soaks up the road perfectly with no knocks or bangs from either corner.
The disc brakes all around ensure the Mk2 comes to a stop in a straight line, with a firm feel to the pedal and no juddering.

image

The Drive

Driving the 1966 Jaguar Mk2 is a charming, vintage experience. With its sleek curves, wood interior and leather seats, it feels classy and nostalgic. The 3.4-litre engine offers smooth, lively performance, while the steering adds to its engaging, analogue feel. It’s not modern, but it’s full of character and a great experience.

image

Electrics and Other

All switchgear appears to function correctly, and the switches are cosmetically in good condition. There is a period-looking head unit installed, which does have Bluetooth connectivity.

image

History and Paperwork

Original handbook, service book and a stack of previous MOT certificates help make up the history.

The Jaguar’s history file is quite comprehensive, with previous invoices present along with old MOT certificates and the original service book which some stamps.

A lovely, well-presented British classic which is very usable and is easily capable of keeping up with modern-day traffic – with the added bonus of being super cool, it’s a Mk2 Jag after all.

We’ve carried out our usual seller checks, including verifying photo ID, the V5C, and an HPI check. This confirms the car has not been stolen, written off, or has any outstanding finance. Please note: This check does not include mileage verification.

We’ve summarised the car based on the seller’s information above. As always, we go to great lengths to photograph and film the car in high-resolution detail so you can make your own informed assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So grab a cuppa, sit back, and enjoy reviewing everything in this listing.

Viewings are welcome for all our listings. Please get in touch to arrange a time – we just need to speak with you first and receive valid photo ID before confirming.

If you have any questions — no matter how small — please ask the seller in the comments section below before placing your bids, as bids cannot be retracted and form a binding contract if you win, just like in a traditional auction house.

    Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price a seller is willing to accept for their vehicle. We work closely with sellers to set realistic reserves that reflect current market values — we don’t take on vehicles with inflated or unrealistic expectations.

If the reserve isn’t met when the auction ends, we’ll work with the highest bidder to try and agree a deal with the seller.

Whether the reserve has been met may / may not be disclosed during the auction — just like a traditional auction house. Bidders usually find out if they’ve won only when the auction ends.

    As a guide:
    – If you’re able to place a second bid, the reserve hasn’t been met.
    – If you attempt to outbid yourself and the system blocks it, then the reserve has been met.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.
