Introduction

Glyn Parry
Professsional Consigner

One of Britain's finest - the Jaguar 340 offers both driver and passenger grace, space, and pace all wrapped up in one really elegant package.

Along with the E-Type and the XK120 / 150, the MKII is firmly in Jaguar's ‘A Lister' category – its beautiful, luxurious, elegant and a serious performer. Introduced in 1959 the Jaguar MKII eclipsed its predecessor with improvements to handling, a more modern appearance and the availability of a 3.8L straight six engine. As well as offering typical Jaguar refinement, the cars were fast and nimble leading to them quickly establishing a well-deserved reputation as an excellent ‘getaway’ car. In response, the Police ordered specially tuned and modified examples to both catch the criminals and patrol newly opened British motorways that, at the time, had no speed limits.

Coming to market from ~2 year ownership and only 6 previous owners, this 3.4L Mk2 presents in excellent condition and looks stunning in green over tan and has an extensive history from the last ~10 years where it has been fully restored over time. Highlights include the exterior and interior renovation in ~2015, and engine rebuild in 2021 at a cost of ~£6,000, the total spend on renovation over this time is near ~£32,500 as seen in the invoices. In the past 2 years it has covered ~500 miles forming part of a small collection of cars with an enthusiast owner. With desirable manual with overdrive gearbox, this car has some other welcome upgrades such as CMC power steering, Coombs wheel arches, suspension upgrades like Spax shocks, halogen headlights. WithJaguars 3.4L straight six, and recently serviced in preparation for sale, this car is well worth a good look if you're in the market for one.

This listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting Paul the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I've always admired the Mk2, this car was bought to be enjoyed and importantly used for my daughters prom.

Paul bought this 340 ~2 years ago, the main reason being to take his eldest daughter to her prom "I had to drive them in the coolest English classic. It's such a stunning car that has a real sense of elegance and class about it". With its beautiful colour combination and impressive history, most importantly the ~£6,000 engine rebuild in 2021. He also mentions "That straight-six sound is just something else, it never fails to impress me and is such a joy to just listen to the engine when on the road out on a journey".

He is bringing the car to sale now with its main task completed, and his eye on another classic car "The car was purchased to do one job as a proud Dad going prom, it did this admirably and then the plan has always been that it would move on to a home where it could be used more. I don't want to see it go, but it's served me well and I'm now in the market for a Mini Cooper S". Paul has just had the car MOTd in advance of the sale, and a full checkover and service at a cost of ~£1,000 in preparation for sale, he'll be happy to answer any questions on the car in the comments below.

Exterior

The very essence of an excellent British sporting saloon, the Mk2 is instantly recognisable and a stalwart when you think of classic cars.

Wheels and Tyres

The Jaguar is equipped with a fantastic set of multi-spoke Jag branded 15" wheels. The chrome sections show in a stunning condition around all four corners of the car. We noted very few issues with the wheels as we looked around the exterior. Over in the boot, there is a spare wheel and tyre although this isn't up to the same standard as the main wheels and would benefit from reconditioning at a later date.

The wheels are wrapped in a set of period correct Dunlop SP Sport tyres to the front and rear, the condition of tyres looks great with no obvious cracking or major wear. The tyres are date coded from 2015 across the front tyres. Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior of the Jaguar and a closer look at the wheels and tyres.

Bodywork

The curvaceous bodywork of this Jaguar looks in great condition, with all the panel gaps around the car looking to align very well. Looking across the car, the bodywork looks really great with lines looking straight and no note of dings or marks on the exterior. Both doors and bonnet and boot open and close well and without concern.

The Jaguar has benefitted from restorative work between 2012 - 2016, and the car has been well cared for since. We noted very few issues with the bodywork, there's a sign of corrosion to the bottom of the offside rear door, and a similar sign to the bottom of the offside B pillar in the door shut. Take the time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in "British Racing Green" the paint on this car really does look great and shows it has been truly cared for over its years. The finish is even in colour and coat on each panel of the car from observation. The car was originally finished in silver but has been resprayed at some point in the past.

Again, we have taken high resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves. The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

Windscreen section, side windows and mirrors all appear in good condition and we could see no sign of scratching or chips on the glass. The chrome areas around the car were looking good too when we reviewed the exterior sections, only some small signs of pitting that can come with age. The seals on the whole look good around the car and in line with the rest of the condition of the body.

The car's leaping Jaguar sits proudly in position at the front of the car. We did note that the badges showed signs of wear, but given the heritage of this car, nothing we saw out of keeping.

Interior

The 60's were stylish times as reflected in the interior, a true classic and a real stand out car in Jaguars motoring history.

Seats and Carpets

The tan seats are in excellent re-upholstered condition along with the carpets and headlining re-trim. The trim work was completed in July 2015 at a cost of over ~£2,300. The seats showing without concern or real signs of wear since their refit. Overall, a really enjoyable place to sit as a driver or passenger and take in the road ahead in this comfortable cruiser.

The new and updated carpet sections also have over mats present to really maintain this luxurious interior. Checking underneath the mats showed the floor in a good condition. Please take a look at the images and videos for a more detailed view of the inside of this car.

Dashboard

The walnut veneer dash appears in great shape with no marks or scratches to report and shows a lovely high gloss finish to the top. Mileage counter showed with ~2,359 miles at the time of our visit. The central dash area showed the speedometer and mileage counter displaying well and without concern, again there were no observed scratches or marks on this section.

The switches on the main dash facing looked good and add a great sense of nostalgia. We noted no issues with any warning lights and the amp meterage, fuel gauge, oil temp and water temp gauge were all functioning without concern. Looking over the interior, we did note that one of the door cards had come away slightly from the passenger side door which may be worth a look over from the future owner, these items weren't replaced as part of the interior renovation. Our interior gallery section takes you over some closer images of the 340 dash, head over and see the car's interior in finer detail.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

In line with the rest of the interior, the steering wheel and gear stick are in great condition, showing very little signs of wear. The chrome support section was a nice touch to the drivers setup and the Jaguar motif on the steering wheel centre was a lovely highlight to the cockpit area.

Looking over the gearstick, the surround looked in great shape and was fitted nicely and showed without wear or tear concerns. In summary, a great place to control the car from.

Mechanics

Starting up without concern, the 3.4L engine performed wonderfully and the car has benefited from a recent service and checkover.

Engine and Gearbox

The cold start represented no issues for the engine, with oil pressure and temperature gauges looking good. The car had been started up on the morning of our visit, but given the engine overview was carried out much later in the day, the engine was cold when we carried out our checks, on cold start it runs on choke. Overall no issues were observed with the engine, a great benefit to the Jaguar is the servicing and rebuild of the engine in April 2021 with invoicing in the paperwork gallery to show the full works carried out.

The car is fitted with a manual gearbox with overdrive, out on our test drive, this was working nicely with the drop down in revs noted. Paul worked through the shifts without issue and we observed no problems with the clutch or transmission when we were out on the open road, a new clutch fitted alongside the engine work in 2021.

Take a look at the car and engine section which we've highlighted in the cold start section of the mechanical review video. We take the car on a short drive and go into further detail about the Jaguar, taking it out on some local roads to get a better sense of what this car is all about.

Suspension and Brakes

On the drive out, Paul took us around some local roads, we heard no knocks, bangs or squeaks from the suspension and overall the car performed as to be expected with no observed issues. The Jaguar has had its front suspension unit re-bushed in April 2021 which benefits the ride feel. The brakes felt to have no pull or vibrations that stood out to us when on the journey and brought the car to a stop nicely.

We cover off the underside of the 340's exterior in our "Mechanical gallery" section. Head over to our video section where we've summarised our visit in more detail for you to view for yourself.

The Drive

The Jaguar is in lovely condition and a really smooth drive. The suspension performed without worry and the power was delivered really evenly. Overall, the 340 is a very comfortable car to drive, but also has the ability to perform really well with its 3.4L engine delivering ~210BHP, a top speed of ~120MPH and a 0-60 time of ~8.8 seconds from factory.

Electrics and Other

Electrical components are relatively minimal on the car given that it's a 60's classic, but did include an electrical meterage check, fuel gauge, oil temp and water temp gauge which were all functioning without concern.

Paul told us that he has had no issues with the electrical elements on the car and to the best of his knowledge, everything was working as it should do. This car has had some upgrades in the shape of; halogen headlights, CMC power steering, high torque starter motor.

History and Paperwork

Coming to market from ~2 year ownership, desirable specification and upgrades, ~£1,000 recent check and service, and restored over the last ~10 years to the cost of ~£32,500, this 340 is well worth a good look and bid.

The Jaguar has benefitted from a recent oil and filter change, air filter, fuel filter, spark plugs, full carb check, clean and tuning in May 2023 along with an MOT actioned in advance of sale. The car has had several upgrades added to it over its years; the wheels have been reconditioned and include period relevant Dunlop tyres, Coombs wheel arches have been added, suspension upgrades including Spax shocks, a high torque starter, updated clutch, stainless steel exhaust, CMC power steering, halogen headlights, new mirrors, new interior seats, reconditioned radiator, new carpet and a roof lining re-trim. We have listed the spend from the previous owner in the documents. The total work from the previous owner 2012 to 2021 was almost ~£32,500 which brings the car up to the standard you see in the listing. With nearly ~£6,000 spent on an engine refresh in 2021 approx ~1000 miles ago, the 340 is absolutely ready for its future owner.

Should there be any questions required, Paul would be happy to answer these in the section below.

Hello Paul I had been talking to Kulraj hoping to come and look at your Jaguar but as its not possible I have looked at the very good info you supplied and the work done on Trade Classics website . Looks like a nice vehicle .

I looked on the DVLA site where you can view Past MOT results. The last MOT says a leaking rubber pipe? has that been sorted ?

Previous to your ownership there are lots of advisories on suspension bushes and corrosion. What did that sorted before you owned the car .?

There is a Failed MOT at 92700 miles where it states the All of the suspension had generally deteriorated.

I would be grateful if you can help me with what I have written.
regards Gary.
