On the open road, the Jaguar XJS is currently one of the best value long-distance cruisers out there. Late-model "Celebration" six-pot cars offer a tremendous experience for the money.

The Jaguar XJS is a fascinating story of how it developed from an unwanted gas-guzzler into one of the classiest swingers in town. Born out of the strife that was British Leyland, Jaguar, against all odds battled away to make it into one into a well-liked grand-tourer. The car had been in production for 21 years, but its the later post-1991 Series 3 cars are the ones most buyers are attracted to. By this time the XJS was not only sleeker but also used galvanised steel body parts, accentuated by the use of the silky 4.0-litre AJ-16 six-cylinder engine.

Simons car has been well used but also well looked after. In the real world, this is a huge advantage as the XJS uses an engine that needs to run on a regular basis and when maintained goes for miles and miles. Finished in a subtle "Ice Blue" paint, this car is one of the last XJS to roll off the line, so benefits from both developmental and build quality advantages.

Meet the owner

I purchased the car in October 2000 and used it as my everyday driver for five years, then as my “weekend” car.

Simon bought the car when it was just five years old in 2000. Despite the excellent overall condition of the car, he chose to Waxoyal when he bought it, with an additional treatment when he upgraded the suspension to Aston Martin DB7 springs and shock absorbers. This is quite a significant modification, as it has sharpened the cornering while maintaining the cruising ability.

Now Simon has retired, he has bought a cabriolet car to replace the XJS. It is not without regret, as he says the Jaguar has been very reliable. Only once did it let him down in his twenty years of ownership, relying on the cars 'limp mode' to get him home, just the kind of relatability you expect from the run-out XJS.

Exterior

The XJS has worn its years very well. The combination of regular use and careful attention has benefitted this example.

Wheels and Tyres

Being a Celebration model, this car features the diamond turned 16" wheels, we love the look on the XJS.

The alloys and Pirelli tyres are in excellent order with no evidence of major scuffs and kerbing and well within the legal tread limits.

Bodywork

Overall the metal is excellent condition, with no signs of accident repair or overspray. There are some rust bubbles on the top of the windscreen and sill. Typically there are minor age-related imperfections, with minor wear and tear on the front and rear bumpers, door edges.

Paint

Jaguar really sorted out the quality of these cars in the '90s so the finish and coverage of the paint are as to be expected. The lustre and finish are excellent, and the colour match is even throughout.

Glass and Trim

The XJS relies on the detailing, with a mix of chrome, rubber and plastic to complement the imposing styling. The good news is that these items are in excellent condition. The glass rubber are good, with no major signs of cracking. The glass is clear, with no fogging or major scratches.

Interior

The XJS combines the glamour of a '70s car in a '90s package which enables the driver to deal with modern road conditions with ease.

Seats and Carpets

Being a Celebration, the cars feature the leaping Jaguar embossed into the headrests on the front seats, and considering its regular use, the interior is wearing its age well.

The carpets are damp-free and not excessively worn. All the seats are in good condition, with no rips or sagging. The driver's seat shows sign of wear, with the usual bolster wear and age-related cracking. The rear seats are almost untouched, with the carpets in a similar state. The boot carpet shows signs of regular use.

Dashboard

The XJS comes with an impressive level of standard kit, including ABS, airbags, air conditioning, cruise control, electric seats/windows/mirrors and original Jaguar sound system.

The dashboard top is in excellent condition with no cracks. The veneer finish across the whole of the interior still maintains its sheen. The headlining has minor signs of sagging. Take a look through the photos and video.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The wood steering wheel and gear knob complements the 'old-worlde' charm of the XJS, with the minimum of wear and damage.

This was another feature unique to the Celebration, with the wood trim extending to the door cards too.

Mechanics

The AJ-16 engine gave the car a reputation for reliability, and the XJS is best at relaxing at 70mph for long periods of time, a true GT.

Engine and Gearbox

The 4.0-litre engines are known for their durability and mechanical reliability, regular servicing and the owner's ability to keep on top of any issues has meant there have been no significant problems in the 20 years of ownership.

Suspension and Brakes

The car has benefitted from the typical upgrade of DB7 springs and Monroe shock absorbers which has sharpened the cornering and improved the sporty feel, whilst still maintaining the silky-smooth cruising capability. The brakes are said to be in good order.

The Drive

Never designed to be an out and out sports car, the XJS has always been best suited for the open road and long-distance travel.

However, it is still an agile car to drive, with plenty of power and the irresitable charm of the long slung driving position surrounded by leather and wood.

Electrics and Other

All the electrics, with the exception of the air-conditioning, are fully functioning. A benefit of a car that was in production for 21 years is that any issues that effected the original car were ironed out by the '90s and these later versions are almost a world apart from the British Leyland products.

History and Paperwork

This 1995 car comes with the benefit of 20 years of maintenance by the same owner.

Simon has kept on top of the important issues with this car, although the later models are significantly better than the originals, maintenance is a must.

The dilligent service history, with the regular maintenance bills and careful driving, makes this one example something of a rarity in a minefield of '90s cars. The car has just been serviced ready for the new owner and has a recent MOT.

Were the exhaust leaks on the MOT fixed? If so how?
Was the corrosion to the ferrules and suspension components addressed?

Hello Simon, your car looks very loved and looked after. I myself have had 2 XJS cars. An early Facelift (written off by a BMW driver (at least he stopped) in London and a twin headlamp Celebration. Does your vehicle have an immobiliser / alarm? Any fluid leaks / puddles etc., Windscreen chips cracks Electric issues: mirrors, lights staying on, aerial etc., battery needing to be disconnected to avoid it running flat. Do you have any pics of the under carriage, suspension etc., Has anything been welded or plates put in the foot wells. Any moisture or damp in the… Read more »

Hi, thanks for the questions. OK let’s see: It has the immobilizer but I have not used it for a while, the locks tend to stick so the alarm goers off. I just use the key to lock it. No windscreen chips, or electric issues, I keep it on a trickle charge and it has a new battery every couple of years. I sent some pics to trade classics of underside, the suspension was renewed in 2007 with DB7 upgrades o should be fine. No leaks in football, floors all look fine. Thanks SImon. All very honest.
Did the DB7 ugrade effect the insurance. Is the ride hard.
Does the car tramline? ie drift to the road camber.
Does the central door locking mechanism work?
Am new to the whole auction thing but i like the security. Are there viewings?

No footman James said no extra. Ride is slightly firmer but compromise is much improved cornering. Yes it does Tramline e, yes locking works. Whole point of this is no viewings I thought.
