Introduction

Andrew Taylor
Professional Consigner

It took some inspiration from West Bromwich to bring together American muscle, sharp Italian styling and luxury interior to create the Interceptor.

The Jensen Interceptor has surely carved a place for itself in the 1960's hero-car hall of fame, based on that renowned combination of American muscle and Italian sophistication. The very significant, for its day, propulsion was taken care of by lazy but muscular V8 power giving this GT car supercar killing performance; 140MPH and sub 8 second 0-60MPH times. The ageless elegance of the exterior was courtesy of Carrozzeria Touring of Italy making this car a perpetual head-turner both at launch and today.

This is a 1969 car, making it one of the last of the MKI cars and it has been clearly cherished and well cared for during its life. In its current ownership the car has undergone a further comprehensive schedule of works including a marvellous, and very fragrant, interior re-trim, a quality respray and numerous mechanical improvements and upgrades. These include replacement of all seals, bushings, suspension components, engine consumables, steering and brake parts and lubricants. This Interceptor is now ready for its next lucky owner to use and enjoy.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Andrew after meeting Arya the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I'd always dreamed of owning a Jensen Interceptor. Some say never meet your heroes, but I am glad I did. The car has lived up to, if not exceeded, every expectation.

Arya has been the custodian of this car for around two years. During that time he has taken much pleasure in bringing the car up to his exacting standards and using it for various road trips and adventures. Whilst travelling to our photo location the car attracted a lot of positive attention which Arya was clearly proud of. It seems that this automotive hero still has it!

As is often the case, other automotive dreams and projects mean that he is looking for the Interceptor's next lucky owner to enjoy and cherish the car, just as he has. He'll be happy to answer any questions you have on the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

The metallic Fawn colourway of this car combined with the iconic Italian styling and signature clam shell rear window really make it a feast for the eyes.

Wheels and Tyres

The original Rostyle, five spoke steel wheels are very "of the period" and have been repainted as part of the restoration. They present very well as a consequence and are one of the signature features of the Interceptor's exterior appearance.

The Pirelli P4000 Super Touring tyres appear to be very lightly used with a very good tread depth in evidence all round. The high side wall is not only period correct but also helps contribute to the great ride quality of the Interceptor.

Please enjoy the full exterior gallery to see the wheels and tyres in more detail.

Bodywork

During our visit no areas of concern were noted with the bodywork of the Interceptor. It all appears to be in first-class condition with all doors opening and closing positively. The panel gaps look very tight and symmetrical.

We have taken videos and photos for you to have a detailed view of the bodywork.

Paint

The car has clearly undergone a very professionally executed respray with the paint being highly reflective and lustrous throughout. Even in colour throughout, please examine our photographic package to judge the high quality of the paintwork for yourself.

Glass and Trim

The glass all appears to be original to the car judging by the inscriptions. It all appears to be in good, original condition with no areas of de-lamination or fogging noted during our time with the car.

The signature, and huge, rear hatch glass is in great condition and the rear hatch opens, stays open and closes as expected. The chrome trim on the car could benefit from some attention to bring it up a level. View the photo gallery to see the detail.

Interior

On opening the doors, a glorious smell of leather greets you. This positive first impression is only strengthened when you sink into the soft leather armchairs of the Interceptor.

Seats and Carpets

The interior of the car has undergone a full, professional retrim in soft grey leather with stitched bronze accents. Our photographs will attest to the quality of the workmanship on display here. What they won't tell you is how comfortable, cosseting and beautifully scented the leather is!

The Wilton carpets in ink black are all new also, making this one of the best Jensen Interceptor interiors you are likely to find.

Dashboard

The dashboard is vinyl topped and faced with original walnut veneer. Combine this with the delightfully period Jaeger gauges and dials and the plethora of centre console toggle switches and levers and you have a glorious 1960's dash layout.

Everything appears to be in great condition too with no sense of "over-restoration" in evidence. Arya confirms that everything works as it should which was our impression too during our short trip in the car.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The three spoke leather and alloy wheel is quite likely the original item and is in good overall condition, the leather would benefit from some treatment. You will see from our photographic package that there is a large washer bolted to the right hand side spoke of the wheel. We can only assume that this is a repair of some sort and it appears to have no detrimental effect on the usability of the steering wheel.

The chromed gear selector is in great condition and appeared to work smoothly and positively when we travelled in the car.

Mechanics

A big V8 feeding its significant power through a silky smooth TorqueFlite gearbox makes for deceptively brisk, but gloriously refined progress... And it sounds amazing too!

Engine and Gearbox

As you will see from our photographic package there are a quite a number of new or replacement components in the engine bay of this Interceptor. This visually underscores the quality of the restoration work undertaken here.

Our cold start video shows how well the car starts and idles on what was a very cold, battery draining morning, and the engine and gearbox went on to perform faultlessly during our brief drive in the car. Arya mentions that on the odd occasion putting the car in to park has been difficult, he's getting his mechanic to take a look and see if some adjustment will fix it.

Suspension and Brakes

Arya told us about the recommissioning and restoration work that included the suspension and brake system components. During our drive both brakes and suspension seemed to work very well with no unexpected bumps or thumps.

The Drive

A first ride in a Jensen Interceptor is a fascinating and memorable experience. The mighty V8 sounds amazing without being ostentatiously loud. The overriding impression, however, is of very refined and comfortable progress. The comfort of the seats and the surprising compliance of the suspension make for a very premium feel to the car.

When the accelerator is pressed more firmly, however, the purr becomes a roar and the big bonnet rears up and the horizon begins to blur in a highly impressive fashion. To this passenger, at least, it is a highly captivating combination of power and refinement. Truly an automotive equivalent of an iron fist in a velvet glove.

Electrics and Other

The electrical systems on the Jensen all appeared to work as expected and Arya confirmed this too. Being a 1960's car the electrical systems aren't extensive or sophisticated but there are electric windows and a period radio present.

History and Paperwork

The paperwork archive accompanying the car attests to the well cared for history of this iconic British GT, beautifully retrimmed, an exterior renovation and important mechanical work make this a cracking example coming to market.

There is a significant level of paperwork available with this car and a sample of that archive is pictured for you here. Much of the work to bring it up to this standard has been actioned by Arya along with the help of a trusted friend, you can see the extensive parts list from the invoices from specialist parts supplier Martin Robey.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We have summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
