Lightweight, great handling and cracking value - the Elise S2 is in a league of its own.

Released in September of 1996, as with most Lotus models, the car features a fiberglass body shell that is bonded to an aluminium chassis, providing a very rigid platform for the suspension. Over its 25 years of production, Lotus hasn't changed this design principle, as it works so well. Named Elise after "Elisa Artioli", the granddaughter of Romano Artioli, chairman of Bugatti and Lotus at the time of launch. In the spirit of Lotus principles, this car has been designed to minimise weight and maximise performance - this is a true and pure Elise.

This particular example comes to market from 11 year ownership, from an enthusiast collector of sports cars. It has had a head gasket and timing belt replaced ~5,000 miles ago, and has been used regularly in the current ownership.

Meet the owner

For the sheer joy of driving there is really nothing better than a Lotus.

After 11 years of ownership, Tony has decided it's time for this Lotus to leave the fold. He's used the car regularly, in amongst a number of other lightweight sports cars he owns, he tells us "It is sometimes said that every sports car enthusiast should own an Alfa Romeo at least once in their life. As much as I also appreciate Alfas, personally I think that a Lotus is the car every sports car enthusiast needs to own at some point".

He's recently put the the car through an oil service, and had the timing belt and head gasket changed ~5,000 miles ago. Tony is now on the hunt for larger car for his more regular use, and so the Elise comes to auction with us. Exterior

With simple and clean lines, the Series 2 still has that diminutive package Lotus are known for.

Wheels and Tyres

The 5-spoke star-shaped silver alloys appear in good condition around the car. There are a handful of small marks on a couple of the wheels as pictured.

The car is fitted with Yokohama tyres at the front and Avon ZV7 tyres at the rear, dated 2016 The tyres appear to have a good amount of tread left for the new owner, nothing flagged on a recent MOT, take a look at the photos and videos for a closer look.

Bodywork

The bodywork of this Elise S2 with regards the panel gaps around the car, look to align well. We noticed some slight areas of cracking around the front and rear bumpers, the nearside rear panel has some deep wear to the fiberglass, on the whole the condition could be described as a drivers example.

Paint

Finished in a silver, the paint appeared in fair condition on our visit, considering the age and use of the car, there is a fair amount of age-related marks across the bodywork. We did notice some patches of blistering on the front bonnet too, and nearside panels of the car as pictured. As with the bodywork, this is very much a drivers example rather than a show queen.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass on this example looks good and in line with the mileage and ownership, we didn't notice any major chips, cracks, or discolouration on our visit. The window seals look good too and in line with the rest of the condition of the car.

The car would benefit from a new fabric roof due to wear and age. Tony reports the current roof is very water tight and didn't want to remove the fabric roof as it has not been removed for quite some time. View the image gallery to see the detail.

Interior

The Elise has a stripped-back cabin, these cars are all about lightweight performance after all.

Seats and Carpets

Lotus half-leather sports bucket seats are a key feature inside this lightweight interior, both appear in fair condition. They show their age through the patterns on the leather and wear/marks to the fabric, but do hold their own/no obvious rips/tears etc.

Basic carpets are fitted for the driver and passenger, disregarding any unnecessary weight inside this car.

Dashboard

The instruments are easy to read and Tony assures us they all work as expected. The soft fabric trim to the top of the dash is showing some signs of age through use, as with the rest of the car.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The minimalistic Lotus steering wheel and metal gearstick are in good condition, the centre item on the steering wheel showing its age.

Mechanics

Weighing in at 750kgs, the Lotus has a superb power-to-weight ratio, with the sprint to 60MPH only taking 5.8 seconds.

Engine and Gearbox

The car features a naturally aspirated 1,795cc K-Series engine rated at ~120BHP, and Honda PG1 gearbox. The car has had a recent oil and filters service, and the timing belt and head gasket were changed ~5,000 miles ago in 2018.

Please watch the "On the Road" video to see the car being started from cold, then run when up to temperature. On our short trip out, Tony operated the gears with ease.

Suspension and Brakes

Tony reports regular maintenance on this example has been carried out throughout his ownership, the mechanics have serviced in line with the schedule ensuring that everything works as expected.

The Drive

This is where the Elise really makes a difference from other cars, showing more expensive sports cars what handling is really all about! Tony loves the Lotus performance and mentioned "personally I think that a Lotus is a car every sports car enthusiast needs to own at some point". There were no obvious knocks or rattles on the drive out. Please watch the video to see the car accelerating, steering and stopping.

Electrics and Other

Tony assures us all the electrics within the car are working as intended. He has installed a battery cut off and replaced the original immobiliser. Please take a look at the photographs and videos for a detailed tour around and inside.

I added a manual override switch for the radiator fan switch – Lotus set the threshold where the rad fan comes on rather high and as a precaution it is nice to have the facility to put it on early if say stuck in traffic. There isn’t much under there to tie the wiring to so it looks a bit untidy admittedly. I didn’t want to start drilling holes to thread tie wraps through. What’s with all the dodgy wiring under the dash ?

The front brake calipers were rebuilt with new pistons and seals, new brake pads fitted and a brake fluid change performed about 2 months ago. For the recent MOT a new pre-CAT Lambda Sensor was fitted and the car then passed the emissions test with ease and feels quicker. Last year a new Alternator was fitted.
