Introduction

Jacob Boodrie
Professional Consigner

Unstoppable off-road performance - this military vehicle of choice is packed full of luxurious touches, providing the perfect blend of luxury and usability.

The Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon (aka G-Class) is a 4x4 "terrain vehicle", originally developed as a military off-roader in Austria. The car is characterised by its boxy good looking styling and body-on-frame construction; it uses three fully locking differentials which makes it rather unique, yet highly capable.

The G-Class is one of the companies longest-produced vehicles with a span of 42 years. This example is the first generation of the G-Class known as W460 ('79-'92), there were three engine options and five body variants with this particular example packing the most powerful 3.0L OM 617 inline-5 diesel.

Michael is a big 4x4 fan and classic car collector - this G-Wagen really caught his eye as he couldn't pass up the chance of owning it and since has given the car a fresh coat of vibrant red paint, and treated it to a lot of tlc.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Jacob after meeting Michael the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

GET YOUR VALUATION

Exterior

Highly sought after with its timeless boxy good looks and rugged build.

Wheels and Tyres

The car is fitted with 15" 5-spoke alloys, which all look in great condition with just some minor age-related marks in places. The tyres all around are Yokohama Geolandar I/T dated 2005/06 and look to have a good amount of tread.

A full-size spare wheel and tyre can also be found on the rear of the car.

Please take a look at the videos and photography for a closer look at the wheels and tyres.

Bodywork

If you're reading this far down then you'll be just like us, i.e you're big fans of the square and boxy good looks this G-Wagon offers.

All the bodywork looks in great shape on this particular example, with all the panel gaps and shut lines looking tight and true. We did notice some very minor stone chips to the front bumper and patches of bubbling on the front bumper bar - nothing major.

We have taken hi-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in a vibrant red, this large utilitarian wagon is unmissable on the roads today, for all the right reasons. The car has recently been treated to a fresh respray, which looks great in colour, and finish across each panel.

When getting really close we did notice the odd patch of overspray on some black trim items that can be fixed easily.

Again, the images taken are from different angles and reflections to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. Please take the time to fully assess the condition.

Glass and Trim

The glass looks to be in great condition all around. The brightwork trim/rubber seals look good too and in line with the rest of the car.

Please view the images and videos of the glass to see in detail.

Interior

Full leather interior and wood veneer trim - a bit of Mercedes luxury in a 4x4 utilitarian vehicle.

Seats and Carpets

Very luxurious full black leather seats are fitted in the G-Wagon and really have stood the test of time. The black leather appears in great condition with no areas of concern to note.

This is a similar story with the black rubber mats fitted throughout and leather-trimmed door cards.

Please take a look at interior tours for a detailed view of the cabin space.

Dashboard

As with the rest of the car, a really nice example. A clean and smart dashboard and instrument cluster.

The dashboard is free from cracks or tears, please view the images to see the dashboard in more detail.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The classic 4-spoke Mercedes-Benz steering wheel that shouts the '90 is fitted. Both the steering wheel and gearstick are in a condition you would expect from this car - we didn't observe and excessive signs of wear and tear and both items present very smartly.

We have captured high-resolution photos for you to review and appreciate the condition of the interior.

Mechanics

The creme-de-la-creme - 3.0L inline-5 diesel block offers the driver mighty power and 3 fully locking differentials.

Engine and Gearbox

Packing a punch with the most powerful engine option of the time, a 3.0L OM 617 inline-5 diesel offers the driver 111bhp to tap into and accent any incline.

Micheal reports both the engine and gearbox are smooth in operation.

Please view the cold start video to see the car fire up the first time and take a closer look around the engine bay and see underneath the car.

Suspension and Brakes

This classic off-roader has bags of appeal thanks to its timeless design and rugged build. Originally engineered and built by Steyr-Daimler Puch in Austria it was designed for military use and therefore came with excellent off-road abilities.

Michael reports the suspension and brakes work well with not issues to note.

The Drive

The G-Wagon is generally seen as status symbol, however, its origins couldn't be further from that perception. Built for military use, the G-Wagon is a highly capable off-road vehicle - this late W460 model is fitted with a full leather interior and sunroof while retaining the boxy classic looks.

Finished with a fresh respray, this G-Wagon is a stylish car ideal for any type of traveling and is not afraid to get mucky.

Electrics and Other

Michael reports that, to his knowledge, almost all the electrics are working well. Just a couple of points to mention that Michael thinks are related to blown fuses, the passenger electric window doesn't work, along with the heated seats.

History and Paperwork

A full respray and highly luxurious interior - this G-Wagen is ready for its next off-road adventure.

The car comes with some MOTs and its V5 - please take a look at the history reports below.

This is an auction on behalf of a trade seller and normal auction rules apply, i.e. there is no warranty, no return policy and bids are binding with more info in our terms and conditions. As you can see, we go to great lengths to represent the car as fully and as accurately as we can, so please take time to review the entire listing, images, and videos and also ask any questions you may have in the 'Ask Owner' section before placing your bid.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Hi Michael. The photos/ videos seem to miss the significant bits! Can you advise if there is evidence of active or past water ingress in the front footwells (normally from front window surround or wiper spindles). Could the gremlins be from water damage to the 2 ecus that are on nearside? Sunroof: are the drains clear/ is there any evidence of the headlining sagging? Chassis: rear spring and damper top mounts. Is it possible to have a photo/report of condition of these areas? Also front nearside sill/ arch area photos are not clear but there appears to be corrosion –… Read more »

Hi Michael (?) Thank you for the reply. Unfortunately it’s a good 8 hour round trip so an inspection in person is not feasible. Commissioning an engineers report to inspect three areas also feels a bit disproportionate. I do not wish to doubt your sincerity but, under the circumstances of the binding trade terms, if further photos etc. cannot be arranged then I’ll value accordingly based on the available info.
Regards.

The person I purchased it from had the re-spray done before putting it in storage and moving to South Africa it has some surface rust underneath as expected but it’s very solid there is no problems with the ABS whatsoever It drives spot-on when I purchased it the heated seats and window was working i’m guessing it’s a fuse as the radio wasn’t working and I changed some in the glove compartment and now it is but I couldn’t manage to find the fuse for the window and the heated seats everything everything else works fine The bodywork is in… Read more »

Hello

Did you have the respray done? Was there much rust on the back corners?

There looks to be surface rust underneath, are you aware of any welding that’s been carried out under there?

How does it drive? Any faults? The video seems to show a sticker over where ABS light might be, is this the case? I’m not sure it’s fitted.

When you replace the fuses does the window and seat heaters work? Does the fuse blow again?

Sorry if the note appears negative,

Steven
