One of just 40 produced, the Mille Miglia edition SL320 is one of the more desirable models to own.

Produced from 1989 to 2001, the Mercedes-Benz R129 SL-Class was a highly advanced grand tourer of its era, built on a shortened version of the W124 saloon platform. It introduced a number of forward-thinking features, including an automatically deploying roll-over bar and, optionally, electronically controlled suspension. Standard equipment was generous, with electric windows, mirrors, seats, and a fully automated convertible roof. To mark the 40th anniversary of Stirling Moss’s legendary 1955 Mille Miglia victory, Mercedes-Benz introduced a limited-edition version of the R129—available as either a 320SL or 500SL. Known as the Mille Miglia edition, it was offered exclusively in 'Brilliant Silver Metallic; and featured polished Evo II six-spoke alloy wheels, a striking black and red leather interior, carbon-fibre trim, and unique chequered-flag-effect lower grille inserts.

This lovely, desirable example comes from ~15 years of ownership and has just over 61,000 miles covered, it has a current MOT valid until 02.07.2025. The car has 4 former keepers, comes with 2 keys, the matching hard-top in "Brilliant Silver Metallic" and all the trim and spec you'd expect, including the 17" Evo 2 alloys.

Meet the owner

From attending the launch of the R129 SL, it had always been one of those cars I wanted to own.

Ever since Spencer set eyes on the R129 SL, he knew he wanted to own one. Finally, 20 years later, the dream became a reality when he purchased this stunning 1995 SL320 Mille Miglia edition. The well-cared-for example has spent the past ~15 years in dry storage and has only been used as a weekend toy, for special occasions, and the odd road trip over to Le Mans - which has been fantastic.

With a change in lifestyle and little time to use the car, Spencer has decided to part with his dream Mercedes and let someone else have the pleasure of the Mille Miglia SL320. Spencer will be happy to answer any questions on the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Just a couple of subtle differences distinguish a standard SL320 from the Mille Miglia edition.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with the original 17" "Evo 2" wheels, these are unique to this model. They are in excellent condition following a full refurbishment.

The Michelin tyres are also in excellent condition, having covered only a handful of miles since being fitted. Please see the image gallery for detailed shots.

Bodywork

The bodywork on this SL 320 is excellent. We didn't notice any dings or dents, and all panels align as you would expect with equal gaps. The hardtop is also in excellent condition, with no damage to point out, and the stand is included in the sale.

There have also been a set of parking sensors fitted to the front and rear; these are colour-coded and look very much like a factory-fit item. High-resolution images and videos have been provided, so please review all media to assess the car’s condition thoroughly.

Paint

Finished in "Brilliant Silver Metallic", the paintwork is excellent. There are some very minor age-related chips, which are minimal, and a tiny scratch on the nearside rear bumper, which could be easily touched in. The finish and colour are consistent across all the panels, and no signs of obvious corrosion, likely owing to limited use, careful ownership and dry storage.

Glass and Trim

The windows are all in excellent condition with no noticeable scratches. All trims and seals are free from perishing or shrinkage.

The fabric roof operates correctly and is in good condition; however, there is a small split in one of the windows, but as you probably know, there are companies that can quite easily replace these.

Interior

A full red/black perforated leather and carbon fibre trim pack was added to the Mille Miglia edition.

Seats and Carpets

The heated leather seats are in excellent condition, with just a tiny amount of colour wear to the bolster giving a hint of their age.

The carpets are clean and tidy throughout the cabin with no signs of age. In the boot, there is a full-size spare alloy wheel, jack, and wheel brace.

Dashboard

The dashboard is in good order with no signs of damage. The centre console has carbon fibre trim, as do the door cards too.

The instrument cluster is working correctly, the odometer shows a reading of ~61,415 miles at the time of our visit, and there are no warning lights present.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The leather steering wheel is in good condition, contrast red stitching continuing the theme, with just a small amount of age-related wear in keeping with the mileage.

The automatic gear selector features the three pointed star on the top, and looks in good condition. Please refer to the interior gallery for more images.

Mechanics

German engineering is evident with the robust, super-smooth inline six-cylinder.

Engine and Gearbox

The 3.2-litre engine starts without hesitation, as shown in the cold start video, and runs smoothly with no issues reported. Power delivery is strong through the range, and the five-speed automatic gearbox shifts seamlessly. Watch the video to see the detail.

Suspension and Brakes

The car feels tight on the road, thanks to its low mileage. There are no knocks or bangs from the suspension, which offers a comfortable ride.

The brakes perform well, bringing the car to a stop in a straight line and with no juddering through the pedal.

Electrics and Other

All of the switchgear in the Mercedes is in excellent condition, with no signs of age or wear to the lettering. This is also all reported to be working correctly, including the climate control.

Early in the current ownership, the head unit was upgraded, and a 6 disc CD changer installed too. As mentioned, the car has had parking sensors fitted to the front and rear, finished in matching "Brilliant Silver Metallic".

Coming to market from ~15 year ownership, this car has just 4 former keepers, is 1 of 40 UK cars, all of the original Mille Miglia spec, original handbooks, service book, and 2 keys present.

In addition to the owner's pack, the Mille Miglia comes with a selection of previous MOT certificates and invoices for work carried out over the years. The most recent invoice, from March 2025, is from the SLSHOP, where the car received a rear-view mirror following an immobiliser issue and an air conditioning re-gas.

    What is your reserve policy?

    A reserve is the minimum price a seller is willing to accept for their vehicle. We work closely with sellers to set realistic reserves that reflect current market values — we don’t take on vehicles with inflated or unrealistic expectations.

    If the reserve isn’t met when the auction ends, we’ll work with the highest bidder to try and agree a deal with the seller.

    Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

    Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

    Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes.
